Percy Alfred William (1910- ), Stanley Bertram (1912-1996) and Jessie Eleanor (1915-2008) were the children of Percy Henry (Harry) Pledger (1884-1954) and Eleanor Elizabeth George (1888-1963). Percy was a tailor in Barnet, Middlesex and the family migrated to Australia in 1923, arriving in Brisbane on 11 December 1923. They settled in Surrey Hills. Percy had a tailoring and later knitwear business at 418 Canterbury Road, almost opposite Alexandra Avenue (? also at another time in Hansen's Terrace in Canterbury Road). The family was musical. After leaving school son Percy joined the staff at Allan’s Music House and rose to become their chief accountant. He also taught and played the violin in a number of orchestras. (See individual entry for him - SH1207) Jessie married Arthur John Marston Bate (1906-1994) in 1941; he was born in Birmingham and his father was also a tailor. Arthur gained BA and MA from the University of New Zealand. He was also primarily a musician, but worked in theatre, broadcasting and teaching in New Zealand and at the State Theatre in Melbourne and the ABC. He was a pilot during WW2 (SERN 255363), rising to the rank of Flight Lieutenant and also a RAAF Chaplain. Jessie and Arthur lived in Hawthorn, Ashwood and Mount Waverley. They are buried in Box Hill Cemetery (CE-213-0029) along with daughter Christine Elizabeth. In the 1920s Stanley Bertram Pledger, along with Harold Sydserf, assisted Stan's brother Percy to establish the Surrey Hills Musical Club. It soon increased to 12 or 15 members, giving 4 concerts a year. They combined with the Surrey Hills Dramatic Society to produce operettas. In time the group expanded to a total of 30 players and became the Camberwell Symphony Orchestra. Stanley Bertram Pledger (1912-1996) is listed in electoral rolls at a number of addresses around Surrey Hills: 1927 - 36 Suffolk Road; 1940s - Essex Road; 1977 - Burwood. All entries consistently give his occupation as manufacturer and it is assumed that this was with the family business. Fabric sample book produced by Ernest Waddington with specifications circa 1930. Such a book would work as a catalogue of a designer’s previous Mastercards. Mastercards are specification sheets that are sent to mills in order to produce commercial amounts of fabrics for tailoring into final products, such as suits. Keeping a catalogue of previous designs is useful for designers to take inspiration from in future designs and for re-releases of iconic designs. This sample book is also notable because of its period of creation. It was created in the Great Depression. The V&A includes information about the minicrini collection that Westwood launched in Spring/Summer 1985 which "...marked what Westwood described as a "cardinal change" – a shift towards tailoring and "things that fitted" – and a more deliberate focus on reworking ideas taken from historical dress. The Manifolds were a significant pioneering pastoral family in Western Victoria. The donated riding jacket originally belonged to Mrs Edward Manifold, formally Beatrice Mary Synnot Anderson. Beatrice was Edward Manifold’s cousin once removed whom he married in 1900. Edward, the son of John Manifold, was born on 15 November 1868 and educated at Geelong and Melbourne Grammar schools and at Trinity Hall, Cambridge (B.A., 1891). He chose the Danedite portion of land at Purrumbete, and on the death of his bachelor brother Thomas Peter (1863-1895), after a hunting accident, he took over his allocation, Wiridgil. He also owned Boortkoi, near Hexham and on these properties, he ran merino sheep, a Lincoln stud which dated back to 1870, and Shorthorn cattle. 3000 acres were also leased to dairy farmers. Edward was a member of Hampden Shire Council in 1909-31 and three times president at Camperdown. The town was largely bordered by Manifold land and partly dependent upon the local pastoral dynasties, which benefited the local area from the families’ various business interests. Though an offer to build public baths to commemorate the Queen Victoria Jubilee in 1897 was not proceeded with, the town acquired a hospital, a reserve on Mount Leura, a clock tower and a cricket pavilion, as well as notable donations from the Manifolds to St Paul's Church and the grammar school. Edward was a keen polo player and racing man. He was also a successful owner of steeplechasers and a committeeman of the Victoria Racing Club for many years. He was also a member of many Western District racing clubs. On the 16 July 1900, Edward had married his sixteen-year-old cousin Beatrice Mary Synnot Anderson by whom he had three sons Thomas Peter, Andrew and Robert Edward Manifold. Edwards's estate at his death was valued for probate at nearly £500,000. Edward died following an operation on 14 February 1931 at a private hospital in Yarra Vale Melbourne. Beatrice passed away in 1954, aged 79 in Ballarat where she was born in 1874. Contextual historic Family background: The Manifold brothers Thomas (1809-1875), John (1811-1877) and Peter (1817-1885) were the fourth, fifth and sixth sons of William Manifold and Mary, nee Barnes, of Courthouse Farm, Bromborough, Cheshire, England. The family had decided to emigrate to Van Diemen's Land. Thomas was sent ahead, arriving in Hobart Town on 23rd January 1828 with £1500 and a letter of recommendation from the Colonial Office. Thomas acquired 1280 acres on the west bank of the Tamar River. John and Peter, with their parents and three sisters, arrived on 8th July 1831. Land grants by then had finished but William brought ninety acres next to his son Thomas’ land and on the combined properties the family built Kelso House. The Manifolds’ properties were comparatively poor and when news of the Port Phillip District, in Victoria reached Thomas, he lost no time in coming to see for himself in February 1836. He was impressed with what he saw and hurried back to Tasmania to buy lambs and ewes. With one of his brothers, on July 9th he landed his stores at Point Henry and proceeded to occupy both sides of the Moorabool River. Thomas, at the end of the year, returned to Tasmania and left Peter and John to run the new property. Thomas, however, returned to Victoria for several visits and on one of these visits he, along with his brothers, examined the country near Ballarat. In December 1838 they managed to penetrate the Stony Rises, and Peter and John reached Lake Purrumbete and the Mount Leura country. During this time, on 4th July 1838, Thomas married Jane Elizabeth, eldest daughter of Captain Walter Synnot, formerly of Ballinate, County Armagh, Ireland, and then of Van Diemen's Land. Thomas joined his brothers, and they occupied the Purrumbete run in January 1839. On the journey to Purrumbete they could not take their stock and drays through the Stony Rises, so went north of Lake Corangamite, to the neck of land between it and Lake Gnarpurt. By April the move from Moorabool area was complete. As yet they had no hut and were working day and night, but their delight in their new run was unbounded. John wrote to his mother: “We are at last got to the land we wished for it is a beautiful place, and cannot be surpassed by any I have ever seen”. The three brothers occupied Purrumbete together, breeding both sheep and cattle until Thomas went to Grassmere run on the Merri River near Warrnambool in 1844. John and Peter soon gave up breeding sheep but retained the well-known '3M' brand for the cattle. These were Shorthorns, derived from four bulls originally imported by the Boldon brothers and later improved by further importations, and were renowned for size and quality. By the time of the gold rush in 1851, John and Peter were breeding over 1000 head a year, as well as fattening stores. The diggings at this time had disorganised Grassmere by drawing away Thomas's men, and his wife decided to take her two sons and two daughters to Europe for their education. Thomas gave up the property next year, went to England to join his family, and eventually brought the family back to live in Melbourne. At Purrumbete things were different. The brothers, John and Peter, preferred black stockmen to white, so the discovery of gold upset them very little while providing the very market they required. John was on his second visit to England when the rush started, and Peter went in his turn soon after John returned. On 2 September 1856 John married Marion Thomson, at Cormiston, Van Diemen's Land. They had four daughters and five sons, from three of whom, William Thomson, James Chester and Edward, the later generations of the family descend. Through the years the brothers had to contend with the scab, fluke and footrot, depression, rabbits, bush fires and pleuro-pneumonia. In 1861 they appointed as manager Henry Manifold Matson, their nephew, who had already been with them for five years. Thomas died in Melbourne on 7 November 1875, John at Purrumbete on 3 January 1877 and Peter at Purrumbete on 31 July 1885. Devout members of the Church of England, John and Peter, during their lives, gave generously towards building St Paul's Church, Camperdown, and guaranteed part of the vicar's stipend. Peter was a member of the Hampden and Heytesbury Roads Board from 1859 and carried on into the Hampden Shire Council when it was formed in 1864. However, it was not for public works that they were known, but for their personal example. In a new land where speculators and adventurers were all too common, the Manifold brothers were among those who intended it to be their home and their children's home. Industrious, unpretentious and hospitable, they were respected in their community as men of the highest integrity. This riding habit is a characteristic example of the type and style of riding clothes that well-dressed ladies wore in the 1920s. It highlights the changes that were beginning in society for women. Prior to 1918 ladies still had to ride side-saddle with skirts over Jodhpurs. Society of the time regarded women riding astride as unseemly and just not done. This riding habit is particularly significant on a number of levels, it shows the beginnings of change in society's attitudes through women's fashion after the First World War. A change that was to bring a start to a more liberating societal attitude towards women after the successful establishment of the Representation of People Act 1918 that gave women the right to vote. This garments provenance is linked to one of Victoria's important pioneering families the Manifolds, one of the first families that came from Van Diemen's land to settle the Western District of Victoria in 1844. Originally the garment belonged to the wife of the great-grandson of pioneer William Manifold, Edward Manifold who married Beatrice May Synnot Anderson, Edwards Cousin in 1900. The garment was made by the Mayfair tailors J. Busvine & Co. in the early to mid-1920s (estimate) who at the turn of the century were tailors to the Courts of Europe. Their clothing is highly collectible today and examples can be found in a number of significant museum collections around the world, notably the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the FIDM in Los Angeles. A riding jacket, part of a three-piece, side saddle riding habit tailored for Mrs Edward Manifold. Knee length English woolen jacket black in colour, seamed and fitted to the female client's figure, fastening from the waist with three bone buttons to rather high lapels. The sleeves are long with closely fitted cuffs and one button and lined with cream satin. The jacket is fitted to the waist and flared to below the hips with a 35 cm vent to the back. Lower back to the jacket is reinforced with removable fabric and the jacket is lined with black twill cotton, there is a cream satin label, with makers' emblem Busvine. The Fashion & Design collection of the Kew Historical Society includes examples of women’s, men’s, children’s and infants’ clothing from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Items in the collection were largely produced for, or purchased by women in Melbourne, and includes examples of outerwear, protective wear, nightwear, underwear and costume accessories.This outfit was donated by Netta Fuller.Two piece grey silk outfit comprising a tailored bodice and a very full skirt. The bodice has puffed leg-of-mutton sleeves and is heavily encrusted with large grey artificial pearls and steel beads of the period. The skirt is cut to allow for a long train at the back. Grey pearls and steel beads are similarly used on the right side of the front of the skirt. Metallic braid may have been added at a later date. The outfit has been much altered over time. This is a product that was sold in the general store of Cramond and Dickson in Warrnambool early in the 20th century and produced for this store at the time. It may also have been given to customers as an advertising feature. John Glass Cramond and James Dickson established a drapery store in Warrnambool in 1855, firstly in Timor Street and then in Liebig Street. It specialized in men’s and women’s clothing and drapery and had a tailoring and millinery business. The store opened branches in several towns in the vicinity of Warrnambool, including Port Fairy. It also opened a branch store in London, enabling it to import materials and other items direct from London. The Cramond and Dickson store in Warrnambool closed in 1973. This mitt is of considerable interest as it is a sample of the wares and advertising articles coming from the general store of Cramond and Dickson of Warrnambool. This store was of great importance in Warrnambool as a dominant business in the town/city for over 100 years. This is a rectangular-shaped oven mitt with light brown leather on one side and a green-coloured felt-like material with a fluted edge on the other side. The mitt has machine stitching diagonally across both sides and machine stitching around the edges. A leather looped tag is attached at one corner so that the mitt can be hung up. The reddish-brown printing on the leather side of the mitt is stamped into the leather. The leather side is a little stained. ‘Cramond & Dickson. Matilda was a Merino ewe who went missing for over 5 years on cattle country just outside of Hamilton. When she was found she had over 30 kgs of fleece that needed to be shorn. She was shorn in Melbourne's Federation Square in 2005. Her fleece was then processed into fabric by CSIRO. The fleece made enough fabric for six jackets. The jackets were auctioned at Crown Palladium Ballroom in March of that year. The winners had their jacket tailored to their measurements by Blazzer. All profits from the auction went to Celebration of Life, a fund established to support Victoria's Royal Children’s Hospital neonatal unitFour samples of wool in the different stages of process. Two CTC School blazers dating from 1970 onwards when Collingwood Technical School changed to Collingwood Technical College. Both have epaulettes on each shoulder with two gold stripes. The first also has two Band badges, one on each lapel, indicating it belonged to a School Band member. It is in very good condition. The photograph is one of a pair donated to the Kew Historical Society by Frances Dorothea Van Brummelen (1931-2011) in 1994. Following her graduation as a social worker, Fran Van Brummelen joined the staff of Kew Cottages in 1969, and became senior social worker there in 1971. She remained at the cottages until she retired in 1994. Earlier, In 1987, with psychiatrist Cliff Judge, she founded the Kew Cottages Historical Society becoming its president. In 2002, the pair collaborated on the book Kew Cottages: The World of Dolly Stainer, which was later commended in the Victorian Community History Awards. Part of the Leo Reoch Cohn Collection. Leo Reoch Cohn served in both World War 0ne and World War Two. He enlisted in the 1st AIF on 23.9. on 6.5.1915, initially in the 22nd battalion (No. 1039), aged 18. Shortly after, on 11.9.1915, he transferred to the 8th LHR and embarked for Egypt on 23.9.1915, serving in both Egypt and Palestine. During that period of service, he transferred to the 1st Australian Light Car Patrol on 8.9.1917. This unit later became the 1st Australian Armoured Car Section. Leo began his return journey to Australia on 16.5.1919. Shortly after his RTA, he was discharged. While on active service overseas, he was hospitalized on a number of occasions due to illness. During World War Two, Leo enlisted in the 21st Battalion VDC (No. V360272) on 18.5.1942 at the age of 44. He was appointed Lieutenant on 25.6.1942. Leo's VDC service was terminated on 31.10. 1945 following the end of World War Two. .1) Tailored khaki woollen officer's dress jacket with silk like fabric lining. Two button-down breast pockets and two button down-side pockets. All buttons are military issue. Unit colour patch on each shoulder (8th ALH). Above the left breast pocket is a World War One trio of medal ribbons. An attached fabric belt has a metal buckle. .2) Light brown cotton drill jodhpurs with button fly. This finely crafted skirt has been made at the Fletcher Jones clothing factory. David Fletcher Jones served in World War One and following this had an itinerant hawker's business in the Western District . In 1924 he opened a tailoring shop in Liebig Street, Warrnambool and began to specialise in the production of men's trousers. In 1946 he opened a shop in Melbourne and in 1947 the firm of Fletcher Jones and Staff Pty. Ltd. was registered. In 1948 a clothing factory was opened in Warrnambool and in the 1960s Fletcher Jones shops had extended to other states of Australia and later the merchandise was extended to men's and women's clothing. It was one of the best known businesses in Australia. The Fletcher Jones company was dissolved in 2011. This is a fine example of a Fletcher Jones item of clothing. The Fletcher Jones clothing business was one of the most important businesses ever to have been in Warrnambool and the factory gardens survive as a tourist attraction in Warrnambool.This is a reversible black, grey and white checked woollen, woman's skirt. It is fully pleated on a waist band which can be buttoned either side. This publication was produced in the mid 1900s when the study of learning disabilities in children was in its infancy stage. The complexities of teaching methodologies to cover various symptoms uncovered by pre-school and primary school education facilities was that "one method suites all". This format changed in the later 1900s when specific "tailor made" teaching facilities where introduced and the "average" pre-school and primary school teaching professionals where not "on the whole" faced with the requirement to apply special remedial programs themselves but instead instigated a referral to dedicated specialists. This book covers the rural student with slow reading, comprehension and writing problems, in an environment where specialist speech therapists and child psychologists were and are still rare.This book although very thorough and highlights the major "communication and reading symptoms, in school children" and remedial treatment, places undue pressure upon those teachers, who, at some rural schools are faced with teaching classroom of students varying in age and thereby abilities of comprehension. Schools in rural Australia sometimes had smaller numbers of classrooms and facilities due to their small feeder population and their regional isolation. The Kiewa Valley before the dramatic increase in population in the mid 1950s (SEC Hydro Scheme) was one of these rural communities whose "schooling population" was diverse and small. This reference book, which was used at a Kiewa Valley primary school, reflects upon the Department of Education in Victoria as a highly professional organisation readily applying "modern" learning techniques to all of the department's regional areas. By this broad based application, no school was seen as having any disadvantage due to physical and/or financial isolation.This book has a plain red, cloth bonded, hard cardboard cover with an envelope attached to the inside back cover. The book has a one front blank flyleaf and two rear flyleaves. Emma Thomas Collection: Items were owned by Emma Courtis, nee Thomas. Family lived in Hamelin St, White Hills. Clothing items possibly made by Emma or a local person in White Hills area and used around 1890s. Emma's family include Elizabeth Penrose (mother), Solomon Thomas (father), and Richard Courtis, a blacksmith (her husband).Black jacket is handmade with a heavy cotton lining. Collar and hem of the garment are lined with black velvet. Sleeve hems also lined with a band of black velvet. Hock and eye fasteners provide centre closing. Twelve small, black buttons (decorative) have been sewn vertically along the centre panel from collar to hem. Boning has been inserted into both of the side seams to shape the jacket. Darts, with decorative stitching, have also been used to tailor the front of the jacket around the centre closure panels (Three darts on either side of the centre closure panels). Second lady from the left is wearing a long sleeve dress with padded shoulders set in sleeves, and gathered at the cuff and secured with a button. The bodice is V necked with a collar, has gathering at the shoulders and is buttoned up with two buttons down the centre, darts under the bust line and a belt is at the waist. The third lady is in a dark suit with a long sleeved tailored jacket with padded shoulders, V necked with a collar and five buttons down the centre. Pockets either side are trimmed with buttons. The suit has a straight skirt. The lady to the right is in a light coloured dress with short set in sleeves and a peter pan collar. At the top half of the bodice the dress has vertical pin tucking with five buttons down the centre. The waist has darts at the bust line and the skirt is of a gored style, there is a belt at the waist. The hem line are all below the knee and are all wearing high heals. This book by J. M. Barrie was a prize given in 1927 by Warrnambool High School to Janet Slade. She was born in Warrnambool in 1913 and marred Stewart Lindsay in 1935. The presenter of the prize, Cr Frederick Williamson, had a tailoring shop in Liebig Street and was a City Councillor from 1924 to 1930, 1934 to 1939 and 1942 to 1945. He was a Mayor of Warrnambool in 1944-5. George Langley was the Head Master of Warrnambool High School from 1924 to 1940. He had a distinguished military career in both World Wars One and Two. Warrnambool High School was established in 1907 and moved to its present site in Albert Park in 1961. It merged with Warrnambool North Technical School to form Warrnambool College in 1995. This book is of interest as a memento of several features of Warrnambool society in the 1920s - Warrnambool High School, a pupil, Janet Slade, an important Head Master, Colonel George Langley and a Warrnambool businessman and Councillor, Frederick Williamson. This is a hard cover book of 432 pages. It has a dark blue leather cover with a gold monogram on the front cover and gold ornamentation and printing on the spine. The book has 28 chapters. The school book plate on the first page has green ornamental edging, the Warrnambool High School shield and handwritten material in black ink. The cover and spine are somewhat faded.‘W.H.S. The Boyds brought this vitamiser from their Camberwell home. Mandie Boyd, Robin and Patricia's eldest daughter, has very vivid memories of this gadget. "It made everything from milkshakes for us to mayonnaise, stuffing for chicken, soups, but especially I remember Robin in the kitchen using it to make daiquiris, endless ice, rum and lemon juice crushed and blended in the good old Vitamiser. He was wearing an amazing pale grey suit. American fabric beautifully cut, must have been synthetic, and had flecks of a darker grey through it, sounds hideous and was “of the time”. His American cotton business shirts were also beautifully tailored, with loads of room to move your arms unlike the daggy Aussie shirts."
