Ida May Boughen was born in Rainbow in 1908. In the 1940s she was office secretary of the Presbyterian Girls' Fellowship. She was commissioned as a deaconess in 1946 and was appointed the Presbyterian Fellowship of Australia field secretary between 1946 and 1951. Viola Annie McVicars (1911–1990) was born in Korumburra on 29 April 1911. At the age of 21, she married William John Ayling (1909–1995). After their marriage in 1932, they moved to Kew, initially to 81 Tennyson Street, and later to 180 Pakington Street. A professional tailoress, Viola Ayling was also a talented amateur potter, creating her ceramics at her home in Pakington Street, where she had an internal studio and a handmade, wood-fired brick kiln in her backyard. Following her death in 1990, her studio pottery passed to her daughter, and following the daughter’s death, to her granddaughter. This piece of glazed earthenware is part of a collection of 15 functional and decorative ceramic items donated by Viola’s granddaughter to the collection in 2024.Parent file of the items in the Viola Annie Ayling collection of 1940s, 1950s, 1960s and 1970s ceramics. This book belonged to Fletcher Jones and was later part of the library at the Fletcher Jones Factory Complex in Warrnambool. Fletcher Jones was a prominent Warrnambool businessman who established a men’s clothing shop in Warrnambool in the 1920s and a factory in Warrnambool in the 1940s. He extended this business Australia-wide and later included women’s clothing. He was noted for his philanthropy and for his interest in co-operative management and the participation of staff in the ownership of the business. This book is significant because it reflects the personal philosophies of Fletcher Jones who was a prominent Warrnambool businessman who advocated the participation of staff in the ownership of businesses. The Fletcher Jones business was important in Australia for over 50 years and played a key part in the economic development of Warrnambool in the second half of the 20th century as the city’s largest manufacturing business. Fletcher Jones was a significant person in Warrnambool in the 20th century. This is a hard cover book of 114 pages. It has nine chapters and a bibliography. The cover is red with gold and black lettering and part of the title embedded into the cover. There is a stamp of the Fletcher Jones business and an embossed one of Fletcher Jones’ home address. There is also evidence of library use. This knitting pattern book dates from about the 1940s. Garments made with a Fair Isle pattern, especially sleeveless vests for men, were popular at that time. In the early to mid 20th century in Australia many of the woollen garments worn were handmade. Today this is not the case and hand-knitted garments are rare. Miss McClure had a lingerie and babywear shop at 114 Liebig Street before the building was demolished in 1953. This book is of minor interest as an example of a 1940s knitting pattern book and as a memento of Miss McClure’s shop in Liebig Street at that time. This is a booklet of 16 pages. It has a white cover with a red edging and black and white photographs and black printing on the front and back cover. This is a Warrnambool souvenir item made about the 1940s. It features the Warrnambool War Memorial which is a Warrnambool landmark popular with the makers of souvenir items for sale to local residents and tourists to the city. The War Memorial was originally designed as a memorial to the local soldiers who enlisted and died during World War One. It was built in 1924 and first used for an official function in 1925. A World War Two memorial section added was added in the 1950s. These items are of interest as examples of the souvenirs made to sell to tourists sixty years ago. The items were made of good quality bone china. The Warrnambool War Memorial still features today on some items sold as souvenirs of the City.This is a white bone china cup and saucer set - a Warrnambool souvenir piece. It has a black and white image of the Warrnambool War Memorial on the side of the cup and on the base of the saucer. There is gilding on the edges of the cup and its handle and on the saucer. The base of both items has a British Crown symbol on it.
