Around 1900 the Ballarat School of Mines had an international reputation. it is thought that that this photograph was originally taken by the New South Wales Mines Department during a visit to Victoria. This photograph was reproduced in the Ballarat School of Mines Annual Report 1900 This image is now (2012) used as Founders' Room in the Ballarat School of Mines Administration Building. Taken 1905 by photograph W.D Gibbons the photograph depicts a pathway leading to the administration building of the Beechworth Mental Asylum. There are three well-dressed young men lounging on the grass as another is jumping behind them. This is significant as it demonstrates that the asylum was not a prison and that the mentally ill patients were allowed their freedom. The Beechworth 'Lunatic' Asylum was constructed between 1864 and 1867 to the designs by the Public Works Department (PWD) and was later renamed the Mayday Hills Mental Asylum. The decommissioned asylum was one of the largest psychiatric hospitals in Victoria and consisted of sixty-seven buildings, one thousand two hundred patients and five hundred staff members. At the asylum, active work was considered imperative and workshops were located near the male accommodations and laundries and drying yards near the female accommodation. The administration building itself highlights the architectural and aesthetic significance of the asylum to the State of Victoria. This photograph is historically significant as it demonstrates the architectural and aesthetic significance of the asylum but also the changing approaches to treating mental health. This photograph is a "snap shot" in time circa 1950s detailing the rural environmental change and the progressive effects of the Kiewa Valley Hydro Scheme on the basic rural setting of the valley (note the sparsity of rural infrastructure). This photograph shows the beginning of the accommodation and administration buildings for use by the construction workers and auxiliary administration employees of the Victorian State Electricity Commission. It also provides a view of the landscape before extensive development of Pondage and other non rural buildings.This photograph details a dramatic period in time which saw an enormous change to the exclusively rural area of the Kiewa Valley region in the mid 1900s (see sparse rural buildings/houses). This change presented both physical and mental challenges to the existing quiet rural inhabitants of the valley. The State of Victoria had to make adjustments to the changing demands imposed by population and industrial expansions. The development of cleaner energy supplies to a growing population has its downside ,which ever way the intrusion into the "natural" landscape is made. The construction of the large Pondage at the centre of the photograph is a good example.This black and white photograph of a panoramic view of the Kiewa Valley (Mount Beauty SEC construction workers village) shows the newly completed transmission line towers delivering electrical power(66KVA) from the Clover Power Station. Note by T.H. Kneen," After the transfer of the small dairy herd to Glenormiston and later Longerenong the milking shed was modified to serve as a machinery shop. Late in 1990 and early in 1991 it was converted for use as the Horticultural College Centenary Centre and as a new home for the Horticultural Shop. Half the space on ground floor level was devoted to a display "A Centenary of Horticultural Education." The old loft area was fitted out as the office for the Executive Officer for the Centenary Celebrations and the storage of archival material." It is possible that E.M. Gibson left these photographs at the College when she retired from teaching there. Photographs relate to her work in designing new planting around the Administration Building and a general record of what the whole site looked like during this time. Various numbering systems have been used on reverse of photographs but the most consistent one has been used for cataloguing and sorting. These photographs include some of the missing ones from Series 1, 2, 4, 6 and 76 in B09.0005 and are the same as those in the negatives B09.0001. Possibly one person (J.L. Provan?) has taken the photographs and E.M. Gibson has picked out the ones she wanted. Doug WRIGHT (1944 - ) Born Ballarat Doug Wright studied at the Ballarta School of Mines Art School between 1963 and 1964, followed by studies at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology from 1965 to 1966, resulting in a Diploma of Art (Fine Art Painting). Since 1974 Doug Wright has had over 20 solo exhibitions and a survey exhibition in 1993 which travelled Victorian Regional Galleries. From 1975 to 2009 Doug Wright was Lecturer in Painting at State College of Victoria (Ballarat) and University of Ballarat. This item was commissioned for the entrance of the new Administration Building at Mount Helen by the Director of Ballarat University College, is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Doug WRIGHT (1944 - ) Born Ballarat Doug Wright studied at the Ballarta School of Mines Art School between 1963 and 1964, followed by studies at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology from 1965 to 1966, resulting in a Diploma of Art (Fine Art Painting). Since 1974 Doug Wright has had over 20 solo exhibitions and a survey exhibition in 1993 which travelled Victorian Regional Galleries. From 1975 to 2009 Doug Wright was Lecturer in Painting at State College of Victoria (Ballarat) and University of Ballarat. This item was commissioned for the entrance of the new Administration Building at Mount Helen by the Director of Ballarat University College, is part of the Federation University Art Collection.
