The photograph shows the demolition or removal of cable tram track in Swanston St Melbourne. The reference notes that work commenced 27/12/1925 and that conversion was completed by 24/1/1926. Given the worksite it would be most likely late December 1925. Note the large unsilenced air compressor, the large crowd of on-lookers and that Swanston St northbound seems to remain open for traffic. In the background are the Royal Hotel Arcade entrance and the Melbourne Town Hall. The Second view is a wider view of the same project. This photograph is Public Records Office photo H109 in the Victorian Railways collection. The photo shows St Kilda Junction, shortly after the introduction of electric trams on temporary track replacing cable trams in St Kilda Road. Cable trams ceased on 26-12-1925 with electric services commencing on Sunday 27-12-1925. There are passengers on the tram. The conductor of W class tram 274 with the destination of Melbourne is holding the pole while it rounds the curve, and in the background is W class tram 386 (St Kilda Beach). A cable tram replacement bus, Reg No. 86053, with the destination of Brighton Rd is passing a policeman on point duty. Various construction equipment and materials can be seen as well as a work gang in St Kilda road, dismantling the cable tram track or constructing new permanent track. The photo shows the intersection of Domain Road and St Kilda Road with W class tram 375 (Melbourne) at the tram stop for Domain Road after the closure of the cable tram lines in St Kilda Road, with installation of temporary tracks on the western side of St Kilda Road. Temporary platforms have been installed. Many passengers are waiting at the stop. The former cable tram lines are in position though some of the outbound cable tram track in St Kilda Road has been removed. There is a conductor on the outbound or southbound platform. The photo shows a cable tram set, trailer 357, at the Flinders St terminus in Elizabeth St. The tram has the return destination of North Melbourne. Note that the destination signage is both black on white letters and white on black letters. The grip or dummy is well loaded with passengers queing to board the trailer. Possibly a warm day given the ladies clothing. In the background are many pedestrians crossing the road to the station. On the corner is a Tea Rooms shop. Pile Siding was opened in December 1915 because of the Pettit Brothers sawmill and pile extraction operation. The siding was a spur with points facing Beech Forest with a timber tramway feeding the siding. During 1916/17 Pettit's sent away 5,000 tonnes of timber before moving to another site, after which loading dropped to insignificant proportions. The bell was installed in the late 1880s at Myrtleford State School 955, Elgin Street, Myrtleford and rang there until the school relocated to a new site in early 1939. The bell followed the pupils to O'Donnell Avenue, but was dismantled and placed in storage in the 1950s. This bell is tied to the early daily life of state schooling in Elgin Street, from the commencement of the decline of gold mining in the district until immediately before the outbreak of World War 2. It is also related to the daily lives of children who participated in the "consolidation" of state schooling at O'Donnell Avenue and the development of "higher elementary" education.Large complete brass school bell with steel tongue.Inscription: "C. Steel framed folding babies basket. The frame painted cream has four swivelled small roller wheels attached. The basket frame can be removed by unscrewing four round knobs and the frame can be folded flat. The basket has a canvas base and sides woven with cotton cord. The basket is fitted with a pink liner with broad lace edges. Ther are two pockets sown onto the inside of the liner. The liner is in poor condition.The Universal Folding Basket.
