Roper's Hut was built in 1939 and was burnt down in 2003. It was rebuilt in 2008 and is situated on the Bogong High Plains on Duane Spur (where Duane's hut had been before it too was destroyed by (1939) bushfires, between Mt Nelse and Big River. The original hut was used as a shelter for cattlemen who grazed their cattle on the High Plains during summer. The Victorian High Country Huts Association Inc. members and friends helped rebuild the hut which is now used as an emergency shelter for visitors to the High Plains.The memorabilia is significant as the items belonged to the Roper family who were one of the original settlers of the Kiewa Valley and one of the original families who drove their cattle up to the Bogong High Plains. The burnt plaque and forks and the rebuilding of the huts (Duane's & Roper's) are significant as bush fires are a constant threat to the Bogong High Plains destroying large areas at a time.1. The cattlemen's huts on the High Plains were used as shelter during the herding of the cattle on the Bogong High Plains during summer. Wallace's Hut is the oldest cattleman's hut and was owned by the Wallace family.This long handled spade was used by the 3 Wallace Brothers to dig 6 post holes for the posts of Wallace's Hut in 1889. On the 6th hole they struck rock 6 inches down but they persevered and succeeded in chipping away the rock to the required depth of 3 feet. Although undated, this plan is probably from the late 1940s or early 1950s. Around this time Port Melbourne Council were looking to built a basketball court in Lagoon reserve, and shelters and a senior citizen's clubhouse in Edwards Park. PMHPS does to believe the basketball court shown in the plan was built but the Port Melbourne Senior Citizens and Trugo Club is at the location shown on the plan. A shelter is in a similar location to the one on the plan. A children's playground existed in that location shown in a photograph from the 1930s. Originally known as "Moorbanool" after the local parish, the name was shortened to Banool on 1 November 1904. At first facilities consisted of a loop siding for eleven trucks and a passenger shelter, plus a residence for the ganger for the track gang based there. Increasing train services on the line required a crossing station in this section of track, so in 1913 Banool became a 'Staff & Ticket' station with a crossing loop, home signals, and a station office, although this only lasted two years. Loading statistics showed that in most years the outwards tonnage at Banool was less than 150 tonnes. From 1924 the amount of timber despatched began a slow rise, but apart from a few years activity was generally slack. The crossing loop, the usually empty goods loop being used if necessary, the home signals and its status as a staff station being removed over the period 1923-27. The track ganger shelter was removed around 1929 and the station reduced to a passenger shelter and goods loop only.B/W. A goods train passing Banool Station, c.1940.
