Five Truscott brothers came to Bendigo from Cornwall and after seven years mining Anthony Truscott opened a grocery store in 30 Havilah Street, Long Gully. Anthony Truscott (Bap 24/2/1856, Cornwall - 21/9/1913). At the age of 18 Anthony went to America but soon returned to England. At about the age of 24 he came to Victoria c. 1880.. He worked in several mines for the next 7 years before opening his grocery shop. In 1907 he was the president of the Bendigo ANA. In 1915 he was the secretary of the Long Gully fire brigade. He died of dropsy and Brights disease. Edward Truscott ( 2/6/1844 - 9/10/1916) Edward and his wife Ellen lived in Smalley Street, California Gully and at 30 Dowding Street, Eaglehawk. He is buried at Eaglehawk. William Truscott (c. 1853 - 14/10/1911) William was a JP. He was also the first President of the California Gully Progress Association in 1910 John Truscott (1/2/1837 - 6/8/1919) John went to America as a young man where he married Christina Grigg and had several children. He arrived in Australia in 1862 with his family. His wife died shortly after the birth of her baby, and John quickly remarried to Catherine Alice Willis and had more children. He was the mining manager at the Hercules and Energetic Mine at Long Gully from 1877. he still held this position in 1882.Grocer's daybook. The book has a blue cover and brown spine. This item has been issued by the licensed grocery business of K.M.Lynch Pty. Ltd., once situated in Fairy Street Warrnambool. It dates from the late 1950s or 60s. The wine and spirits store in Fairy Street was established by Giffen Russell in 1878 and Harry Lynch took over the business in the 1930s. Harry Lynch died in 1953 and Kelvin Matthew Lynch became the proprietor, with the store known as K.M. Lynch Pty Ltd during the second half of the 20th century and the early 21st century. The business closed in the second decade of the 21st century. The item would have been used as a promotional tool, a useful household item given to the Lynch store regular customers and business associates. This item is retained as an example of a promotional object issued by a Warrnambool business in the second half of the 20th century..1 A thermometer mounted on a piece of wood by metal clips. The railway extended through to Mont Albert in 1882, but it wasn't until 1890 that a station was built with funds raised by a syndicate of local landowners.The buildings on the south side of the railway were built in 1910-1911 in the Arts and Crafts style by architect, K W Hardy. The land occupied by the Hamilton Street shops was subdivided in the 1880s and the first purpose-built shop was 'Pope and Moran, Grocers'. This shop later became Tom Morris' Grocery. By 1930 shops stretched along both sides of Hamilton Street and part way along Churchill Street. The donor, the late Norman Carter held a significant collection of photos taken around Mont Albert and Surrey Hills, in particular subjects related to the Church of England.Black and white photo taken from the centre of the road in Churchill Street, Mont Albert. Melray, founded in East Prahran, Melbourne, in 1932, was the forerunner of the Foodland chain (1958). It had branches across the country. Their jam labels included special reward tokens for redemption in-store. It is most likely that Melray jam was produced by Henry Jones’ Australasian Jam Company, or at least labelled at the iconic Jam Factory in South Yarra, Melbourne – a site of jam production in Australia for almost 100 years. Many Melray labels were discovered there, when the site was converted to a shopping centre in the 1970s, a period of industry-wide decline." Elaine Mann was married to David Mann, a successful Wodonga businessman and community leader who passed away in Wodonga in June 2012. David was a member of the Mann family who began their business in Wodonga in 1920. Elaine was a teacher in Wodonga for many years and an active member of the community.This photo collection is of significance as it documents how the businesses and buildings in Wodonga have evolved and contributed to community throughout the late 20th century.Wodonga, High Street West Businesses including W. Hicks & Son was an old style emporium and sold everything from hardware to haberdashery, wine and spirits, and grocery lines. McHarg's Solicitors was established in 1932 when John Charles (Jack) McKenzie-McHarg opened his legal practice in High Street, Wodonga in the Belvoir Chambers. There was also a dentist Mr. N. This tin came from the Sunshine Biscuit Factory in Ballarat. James Long established a confectionery business in Ballarat in 1854 and in 1921 it was known as the Sunshine Biscuit Company. In 1923 the factory was destroyed by fire and rebuilt. During World War Two 80% of the factory products went to the armed services. In 1947 the company was known as Ballarat Products Ltd and in 1962 it was called Sunshine Biscuits Ltd. In 1977 the factory was used to produce dry pet food (Friskies). The building was closed in 1991 and the site developed to include a supermarket, shops and housing. Up till about the late 1950s biscuits were mostly not packaged but sold loose by the pound in grocery stores from tins such as this. Broken biscuits were also sold at a cheaper price. Some biscuits were also sold at that time in smaller tins. This tin is of interest as an example of the tins from which biscuits were sold in the first half of the 20th century. It will be useful for display.This is a rectangular-shaped biscuit tin which is much rusted. The tin has a multi-coloured paper label that has been pasted around the sides. Much of this label has been torn away. The label shows images of biscuits. This tin contained bulk tea which came from the Melbourne Mutual Store. Established in 1872 as a profit-sharing co-operative of shareholders and staff, Mutual Store Ltd was situated at the corner of Flinders and Degraves Street, Melbourne. Fire destroyed the building in 1891 and the new building erected is an important heritage building today. In 1961 Peter Kaye Consolidated Ltd bought the business and it then traded as Mutual Store Holdings Ltd. In 1964 Cleckheaton (from England) took over the business and closed the store in 1965. Tea tins such as this one would have been distributed by the Mutual Store to smaller businesses such as cafes or repackaged for sale at grocery shops etc. Bulk tea can still be bought but the main tea sales are now in the form of tea-bags. This tin is retained as a memento of the days in the 19th and early to mid 20th centuries when tea was sold only in bulk and provided in tins such as this by the importers to small grocery shops and the like. This is a tea tin, cylindrical in shape. It has a tight-fitting lid with a metal clip. There is blue and cream painting around the sides of the tin with images of Greek figures and a wreath with a ribbon. The tin is much scratched and rusted. Operated by John McLean and Son Situated just south from opposite Arthur Street, opposite the Eltham Village Shopping Centre. In 1974 the site was the location of the B.P Garage and opposite was the Woolworths Arcade. The Produce Store sold hay and grain. To the right was Garnet Burges' second hand scrap metal and bottles, then the blacksmith shop, which was later taken over by Garnet with second hand furniture and next door to that was Ray Staff's grocery store. The brick building has signage to promote Tanox Paint and Permoglaze products. This building was demolished by 1963 for the BP Evergreen Service Station. Emma was born in East Doncaster in 1903, the daughter of Carl Heinrich Uebergang and Sarah Buck. Emma’s grandparents were pioneers in Doncaster from 1855 and her father had an orchard in Andersons Creek Road, which was sold in 1961. Mr & Mrs Atkinson had a green-grocery business and general store at 815 Whitehorse Road, almost on the corner of Elgar Road from 1930 until about 1950. (See file for further details). In retirement the couple lived at 63 Zetland Road, Mont Albert and William continued to work as an orchard hand. Emma died in 2000 and is buried in Templestowe Cemetery. In this photo Mrs Atkinson is in the uniform of St. Johns Ambulance. In 1963 she was awarded a ‘Medal of Honour for Efficient Service’ by the Governor Sir Rowan Delacombe. This tin once contained Rayleigh's Nutmegs, a cooking ingredient. It was donated with other similar tins that were used by the donor’s mother who was married in 1932. It those times in Australia all manner of household items, including food and drink, were sold by hawkers (salesmen) who travelled from door to door in both suburban and rural areas. The donor remembered the tin on her mother’s pantry shelf. The Rawleigh Nutmegs label stated “Selected whole nutmegs not ground but granulated to preserve full strength and flavour.” The company had operated in Melbourne, Australia, and Wellington, New Zealand. W.T. Rawleigh & Co. was established by William Rawleigh in America in 1889 and later expanded into Australia. The company made a variety of household products in a factory in Collins Place, Melbourne, between 1930 and 1935. It specialised in medicines and remedies, food additives, cleaning products and toiletries. The company in Melbourne expanded into their factory in Dawson Street, Brunswick, in the mid-1930s. Independent salesmen, often referred to as ‘The Rawleigh’s man’, sold Rawleigh products door-to-door between the wars and after the Second World War in the Melbourne suburbs. Rayleigh’s products are still produced today. The tin is significant for its association with W.T Rawleigh, one of Melbourne’s strong growing manufacturers in period particularly between the World Wars. Rawleigh’s was, and still is, well known for its household and cleaning products, medicines, food additives and toiletries. The tin increases in significance for its use as a recognised object found in many Australian kitchens since early days. It gives a snapshot into domestic life and social norms of the pre and post war period in Melbourne The tin is significant for its association with a local family in the 1930s for the preparation of family meals. Albert and Hazel Crump at their home ‘Hazeldene’, 1 Leopold Crescent in 1916. ‘Hazeldene’ was opposite the end of Albert Crescent. Albert and Hazel lived here from the time of their marriage in 1913 until 1918 when they moved back to Dandenong. This Federation house is of rather unusual design with verandas on the front corners and the centre room projecting. It was demolished in the 1960s and replaced by units. From 1913-1918 Albert was proprietor of the grocery store in Canterbury Road (next to the present Surrey Lodge). This was owned by Alfred Geer and had opened in 1885 by George Sim. Cecil Dobson began work as a carpenter/ labourer in Mount Beauty in 1947 and then as a chainman and truck driver on the High Plains. He started a small shop on the mountain to which supplies had to be dragged on a sledge. In 1952 he entered into a business partnership with Orest “Ory” Freauf, running the general store “Whitehaven” and Post Office at Falls Creek. They acquired a crawler tractor which they called “Leaping Lina” to make transport easier. He also built lodges for other people, including the Dawn Ski Club Lodge. To make more money and get away from the grocery store, Cec and Ory extended their business by adding accommodation turning Whitehaven into one of the best commercial lodges at Falls Creek. Ory and Cecil dissolved their business partnership in 1963. Cec retired in 1984 and moved to Tawonga South, Victoria. Miss Olive Codling was a Foundation Member and a Life Member of the Wodonga Historical Society. Many of her prize-winning photos are held in the Society Collection. She also held a range of roles and committee positions in a wide range of Wodonga community organisations. These included the Horticultural Society, the Wodonga Arts Council, the Wodonga Camera Club and the Wodonga Lapidary Club. These buildings held a variety of businesses over many years. The building on the left operated as a butcher shop, but at times was also a cafe and the site of Whitehouse Motorcycles in the early 2000s. The business on the right at various times operated as "The Tuck Shop", a cafe, a milk bar and grocery shop. This is a tea tin from the business of Rolfe and Co., a wholesale grocery and importing business founded in Melbourne in 1854 by George Rolfe Senior, a merchant and politician. George Rolfe died in 1871 and the business was then run by his son, George Rolfe, Junior. The business continued until at least the late 1930s. George Rolfe (1836-1919) was a keen sportsman and he began holidaying in Warrnambool for some years in the 1870s when he started buying land in the area. By the early 1880s Rolfe owned 50 acres in Warrnambool and established his holiday residence at Lyndoch near the mouth of the Hopkins River. He improved the original site with the addition of a large garden, stables, jetty, boatshed, water well, chaff and bone sheds, reservoir etc and bought other properties including Shipley on the Allansford Road and the adjoining property Fairy Hill. He continued managing the Rolfe and Co. business in Melbourne until his death in 1919. Today Rolfe’s Lyndoch property in Warrnambool is the site of an aged care facility. This tin is of considerable significance as it is a memento of George Rolfe who established the property of Lyndoch in Warrnambool and was a prominent land holder in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. (Note that we have another Rolfe tea tin but it is in very poor condition compared to this later acquisition). This is a rectangular-shaped tin with four sides originally painted yellow but now showing considerable rust. The printing on the sides is brown and white, some on a blue background and some surrounded by decorative patterns.No. 2 Rolfe & Co. This clear, light green, glass "hand blown" fruit preservation jar was used before the mass manufacturing of "screw topped" fruit preservation glass jars imported from Asia or great Britain. The "Mason's Patent" on the jar was for the screw-neck form of the jar top. The screw neck provided the jar with a vacuum seal (preservation) method of fruit jar storage. The reference on the jar of the actual date that the patent was established was in effect for 13 years with extension of a further 7 years. It was an American world wide patent which resulted in only specific manufacture to Glass Works that had paid the manufacturing levy imposed. The air bubbles in the glass suggests that this jar was "hand blown". This would then place the manufacture date before 1900. Preserves came in glass jars bought at the local grocery store or at a large city store on a shopping expedition. The shape of the jar changed as did the stopper used to seal it. Jars were recycled remaining the property of the manufacturer. History of Mason's.This fruit jar is significant to a rural area such as the Kiewa Valley and in the early 1900's when the preservation of fruit and vegetables was an intrinsic part of the typical rural farm/property family. Local shops could only supply fruit and vegetables as seasons permitted. The travelling "green grocer" was more prevalent in towns and cities but not in semi remote rural areas. Aesthetic: Display showing embossing & shape especially if in good condition.This vintage "Mason's Patent", screw on thread lid fruit jar was hand blown (air bubbles). It was produced for the home canning of local fruit. The jar is made from thick glass and is tinted light green. Clear glass jar with slight green tinge used for preserves. sides almost straight but jar has a slight bulge almost all the way to the top. Heavily embossed on 1 side. Horizontal print in large capital letters. At the top - manufacturer's name with emblem beneath it. The base has a slight bulge inwards with embossing.In a half ecliptical form "MASON'S" and underneath the Mason's logo.Under the logo "PATENT/ NOV 30 th / 1858". Pall Mall was the vision of Richard Larritt who, from the Survey Office (Dudley House) at the top of View Street created order out of the chaos of the early alluvial mining activities along the Bendigo creek. Much history attaches to Pall Mall. The Freemasons' hotel, built in 1858, later renamed the Court house hotel, stands on the Mundy Street corner. In 1902 Sidney Myer opened his first shop close by. Bill Hampton had a grocery business and Colin Creek was a butcher in this block. On the Bull Street corner, Taylor Bros erected a two storied building for their drapery business. Crossing over Bull Street the former Commercial hotel stood on the corner from 1868. Many different shops filled the block to Williamson Street, they included Mr and Mrs Pedersen's café, the Gas Company's office, Fontawayne's frock shop, Hume and Iser, Doug Pain jeweller. Charles Cockcroft born Bundanoon, NSW, 1885, died 1966 and Annie Cockcroft (nee Green) born Lismore, NSW, 1881, died 1943. They are buried together in Eltham Cemetery. On 28 Nov 1931 C.R. Nicholls offered for auction the General Store and attached house he had built on the corner of York Street and Main Road in late 1925. The property was purchased by Charles and Annie Cockcroft from which they lived and ran their grocery business. Following the death of Annie in 1943, and prior to 1949, Charles sold the business and moved farming at Jeeralang North near Traralgon in Gippsland. In 1893 Harry Crowther Slingsby founded the company the family firm was at first wholesale bottlers and had established themselves in Bradford, England, later they had a branch in London. Harry Crowther Slingsby began to look into the invention of labor-saving devices for the company. He had recognised that working practices in the local factories relied heavily on manual hauling and gravity for the movement of raw materials and products from floor to floor. However, this did not solve the problem of moving items horizontally around large buildings. Slingsby then set about creating robust trucks and trolleys to move heavy loads with relative ease. Different designs were created for different purposes sack trolleys for moving large sacks of flour, sugar and dried fruit around grocery stores; high wheeled flat carts towed by one or two people; trucks fitted with wicker baskets carried fibers around textile mills and railway platform trolley to move luggage. The company is still in existence today manufacturing many different types of products.An item from the early to mid 20th century connected with railway memorabilia and a company that had humble beginnings to become today a leading UK manufacture. Mr Robert Crone Phillips was born in Stanley, Victoria and later moved to Wangaratta where he worked at Pinkertons and Sons. On 1 April 1912 he purchased the grocery, ironmongery, and wine and spirits business conducted in Sydney Street, Wodonga, by Mr. D. M. Stavely. This business was beside the old Wodonga Police Station. He received a spirit merchant's license under the new Licensing Act in the Wodonga Licensing Court on 20 March 1912. This was the first occasion on which spirit merchants' licenses have been granted by the court. This license was renewed annually until November 1920. On Friday 15 July 1921, a fire occurred in which Phillips grocer’s shop and a neighbouring draper’s shop, owned by Mr. R. W. McLeish, were seriously damaged. In August 1921 Robert Philips filed for insolvency with assets of £660 10/ and liabilities of £1126 19/6. The cause of insolvency listed was loss sustained by fire and the pressure of creditors. Mr. Phillips retired to Wangaratta. He passed away in 1948. The demijohn is of local significance as it represents an artefact from a local business. Its provenance is clear due to the inscription in the item. This tin once contained McKenzie’s baking powder, a cooking ingredient. It was donated with other similar tins that were used by the donor’s mother who was married in 1932. It those times in Australia all manner of household items, including food and drink, were sold by hawkers (salesmen) who travelled from door to door in both suburban and rural areas. The donor remembered the bicarb soda tin on her mother’s pantry shelf. The McKenzie’s Baking Powder label adds the information that the ingredients were “Prepared with Aerophos, Regd. Trade Mark, the finest raising ingredient. A product of Albright & Wilson, Australia Pty. Ltd.” It also says that it “Excels all others in use”. The Australian family business, McKenzie’s Foods, began in Melbourne in 1852 and continues today, now run be the fifth generation of descendants from the original owners. Its baking and cookery products are well recognised by Australians. This tin originates in the early 1900s from an Australian company that is now managed by fifth generation descendants of the original family after its inception in 1852. The tin increases in significance for its use as a recognised object found in many Australian kitchens since early days. It gives a snapshot into domestic life and social norms of the pre and post war period in Melbourne The tin is significant for its association with a local family in the 1930s for the preparation of family meals. ELTHAM’S GROWTH HAS BEEN RAPID IN RECENT YEARS Unknown local paper c.1960s Recent years have seen a rapid change in the appearance of Eltham’s business centre - so rapid, in fact, that the growth of premises has been almost 300%. For more than thirty-five years Eltham had little more than a dozen traders - the town's business area spreading from Pryor Street in the north, to Pitt Street in the south. The greatest density of businesses - no more than a handful of shops - were situated in the present shopping centre but other essential services such as the Post Office, were located half a mile away. As the town's population grew and the need for more shops became apparent, the growth was centralised around the railway station and Shire hall. Few of the old premises are used for their original form of business today, though many are still in existence. One of the oldest (seen clearly in the illustration) still in use is now Ferrari's Greengrocery. This shop was Eltham's butchery in early days, conducted by Jim Ryan. Up to twenty years ago, Mr. Ryan ran his business from the shop. whilst his son toured Eltham in his horse and cart, cutting his customers' orders as he went from door to door. Another business - one of the few still trading in the same goods-was Burgoyne's Hardware. This is now owned by Mr. R. Clinton, a new shop has recently been added and shortly the old premises will disappear completely. The Burgoyne family were well known to Eltham's population. The Post Office and Store (then in Main Road, near Bridge Street) was run by Mr. and Mrs. Burgoyne. The Post Office was later moved, and attached to the hardware store. OLD HOTEL In this same area was the old Eltham Hotel, almost opposite the present hotel. The building still stands, but has been converted into a house. The hitching rail can still be seen by the roadside. Back in the township was Barber's Blue Gum store, later conducted by Mrs. Burges (mother of Garnet Burges) and claimed to be Eltham's oldest shop. Further down the road, just past the hardware store, was the barber shop and billiard saloon. Next door was E. J. Andrew's news agency, library and State Savings Bank. Eltham's original chemist's shop, or dispensary as it was called, is now an electrical repair shop. On this side of the street too, was Mrs. Monteith - Draper. Mr Monteith was the owner of Eltham' s bus service. This bus service had no regular route, but deposited passengers at the point nearest their homes - a. door to door taxi service. Next to Mrs. Monteith stood another grocery - and general store, and next again, the local blacksmith. Another of Butcher Ryan's sons was Eltham's blacksmith and obviously an enterprising man he conducted a timber business next door to his smithy's shop. These two premises are still run by one man - Garnet Burges. BOOM STARTS Twenty years ago, when Thompson's took over Eltham's pharmacy they occupied the old shop adjoining the Shire hall. The building of Thompson's new premises, from which· they operate today, was the beginning of Eltham's recent growth and development. With another grocery store and a bakery at the corner of York Street, a butcher near Franklin Street, a cobbler's shop opposite the State School (did you ever wonder what that-little building attached to one of Eltham's oldest houses had been?), and an estate agency conducted by Mr. Clark, now Eltham Real Estate - only one trader remained - and today, still carries on, the only original owner of one of Eltham's .oldest established businesses - Mr. Dave Lyon, of Lyon Bros. Garage, which was formerly located in what was later used as Chenowyth's Foundry in Main Road. From the early twenties until little more than six or seven years ago that was the picture of Eltham. Some businesses had changed hands - many years before Mr. C. Rains had acquired Andrew's news agency, Mrs. Monteith's drapery had become Mrs. R. Smith's home-made cake shop, to change again and again to many other types of business. But generally, Eltham was unchanged, for nearly thirty years. Then suddenly new shops mushroomed. The new news agency and drapery, the chemist and adjoining shops, a new butcher, a green grocer and several more. POPULATION DOUBLED In the space of a few years, fifteen new shops, two banks, a restaurant and a post office were built at Eltham. New types of businesses found a ready market in an area which was quickly almost doubling its population. A little over twelve months ago, another wave of progress hit Eltham. Since then eight more shops have been built - a cake shop and fish shop in Dalton [sic – Dudley] Street - for building areas are unprocurable in the Main Street shopping centre now – have been built by Mr. D. Kimball; a new ladies’ and children’s wear shop has been opened by Rains; Eltham Dry Cleaners have another of these new shops, and Mr. R. Clinton has built elaborate new premises. Further down the road, Mr. C. Campbell has built a new butcher's shop, and next door, at present under construction, are a self service store and a shop which Mr. J. Hodges will open on completion. In addition to these new shops, Mr. J. Millett has extended his grocery to almost twice its original size. FLOURISHING Outside the central area, other businesses are flourishing. Latimer's felt factory is being developed in a picturesque rustic setting; P. J. Timber and Trading Company have recently completed a large showroom and timber yard, and in the town itself Nicholson and Merritt are now completing the extension of their foot wear factory to double its former area. This is Eltham today. Progress is moving rapidly in this rural area on the fringe of the metropolis. Less than a decade has seen vast development. The years to complete that span of time will see even greater changes and greater prosperity in this heart: of the Diamond Valley. OLD LANDMARK GOES Perhaps the most famous landmark in Eltham's' business section disappeared last Wednesday when the towering blue gum in Pryor Street at the rear of Main Road shops was felled. The tree, stated to be more than 80 feet high, was the one for which the adjoining café was named, when that business was Eltham’s only provision store, long before the turn of the century. Mr. J. Millett, who now owns the property on which the tree stood, deeply regretted its removal, but was mindful of the need for expansion in the business area. The "Old Blue Gum" was removed by Mr. A. Wilson, expert tree feller, from Heidelberg.
