1 optical discnon-fictionConvict ticket-of-leave register, Toodyay Acc. 721/30 The Swan River Colony, founded in 1829, as a free settlement needed an injection of capital and an increase in population if it was to thrive. In late 1849 a petition signed by prominent settlers, requesting that male convicts be sent to the Swan River, was submitted to the colonial office. This request was welcomed and transportation officially began to Western Australia in 1850. The first convict ship, the Scindian, arrived at Fremantle on June 1 carrying 75 convicts and a small group of Enrolled Pensioner Guards and their families. Eighteen years later the last convict transport, the Hougoumont, arrived with 280 convicts, mostly Irish political prisoners, making a total of nearly 10,000 convicts arriving in the colony. This availability of cheap labour resulted in many convicts being granted their 'ticket-of-leave' before their sentences had expired, which allowed private settlers to employ them. To facilitate the distribution of working men throughout the settlement, hiring depots were established in key town and country areas. Ticket-of-leave men could not leave their assigned district without permission; had to carry their 'ticket' with them at all times and produce it to any official on demand; as well as lodge an official form with the local magistrate on January 1 and July 1 every year which detailed residence, employer and rate of pay. On the positive side, ticket of leave men were able to choose their own employer and even work for themselves. They could also marry with permission of the authorities and even own land. At the end of their sentences, ex-convicts or 'expirees' were given their freedom, although those with life or long-term sentences were often granted Conditional Pardons, which conferred most of the benefits of freedom but did not allow them to return to England. The movement of convicts around the colony is preserved in the many surviving convict registers which are now kept in the State Records Office of WA . These registers list the names of employers and the dates convicts were employed, and detail the rates of pay and any brushes the convict had with authorities. Many of the employers were themselves 'ticket-of-leave' men, expirees or conditional pardon men. One of the convict hiring depots was at Toodyay and two registers from this institution for the period 1862 to 1870 have been archived in the State Records Office at Accession Number 721, volumes 30 and 31. The impact these men had on the infant colony can best be guessed from the statistical data available from official records. In 1850 there were only 5,000 residents in the colony, but at the end of the convict period the number had risen to 25,000. While some convicts emigrated to other parts of Australia after receiving their conditional pardons, the majority stayed in Western Australia. Some had their families join them from the United Kingdom, while others married the young women who came out on the 'Bride Ships'. Over the years family historians' research into their forebears' convict origins have shown the profound influence these men have had on the development of the State of Western Australia and the districts in which they worked, settled and raised their families.western australia, convicts western australia, toodyay registers

1 optical discnon-fictionThe Employee Register for the Kalgurli Mine This is one of the earliest, biggest and longest running mines on the Goldfields apart from The Great Boulder. An inscription inside the register notes that "This book was written up to date all slips on hand at time being included, last number of Registration Slip being 612" (1915) The book is a calendar index to employees in the Kalgoorlie/Boulder area of the Western Australian goldfields. The earliest registration appears to be on I Maly 1899 when C Carlson was entered. Although the note at the front of the register was written in 1915 entries are listed beyond this date at least to 16 January 1920 when the name of Claud Ernest Andrews of Hewitt St, Kalgoorlie was recorded as being engaged. Quite a number of entries record the date of leaving as 30 April 1921, and the reason for the discharge being "cessation of work". For each entry the Date engaged. Name of Employee, Address, Name of Friendly Society, Recommended by, Occupation. Transferred to, Accidents, Date of Leaving, and Reason for Leaving or Discharge is recorded. Later entries include the age of the employee. Occupations are varied labourer, coach painter, shoveller, filler, miner, dustman, assayer. agitator, shift boss, fireman and many more. Gustave Auguste Besson and his family manufactured brass musical instruments in France from 1837 and in England from 1857. In England the instruments were stamped "Besson & Co" between 1895 and 1904. The word ‘Prototype’ was stamped on all Besson instruments manufactured after 1885-86 and referred to the method of manufacture. Bushfire behaviour is influenced by many factors including temperature, relative humidity (RH), forest type, fuel quantity and fuel dryness, topography and even slope. Wind has a dominant effect on the Rate of Spread (ROS), as well as fire size, shape and direction. Temperature and relative humidity have major impacts on fuel dryness and therefore upon the availability of fuel for combustion. The amount of fine fuel available can increase rapidly from nearly zero when fuel moisture content is more than 16% after rain or a heavy morning dew, to many tonnes per hectare as fuel dries out later in the day and the moisture content drops below 9%. This explosive escalation in the amount of available fuel can happen over a few hours on hot and windy days. A sling psychrometer is a simple device for determining air temperature and relative humidity. It contains two thermometers, one of which is covered with a wick saturated with ambient temperature liquid water. These two thermometers are called dry bulb and wet bulb. When the sling psychrometer is spun rapidly in the air, the evaporation of the water from the wick causes the wet bulb thermometer to read lower than the dry bulb thermometer. After the psychrometer has been spun long enough for the thermometers to reach equilibrium temperatures, the unit is stopped, and the two thermometers are quickly read. A psychrometric scale on the side of the instrument is then used to convert the dry bulb temperature TDB and the wet bulb temperature TWB into humidity information. The wet bulb temperature is approximately equal to the adiabatic saturation temperature. The thermometers fold back into the plastic handle when not in use. This instrument was used by Dr Fritz Duras (1896-1965), who moved to Australia from Germany in 1937. As his father was Jewish, Duras was forced to leave Germany, and came to Australia to take up a post as director of physical education at Melbourne University. This instrument was part of a collection of instruments given to his son-in-law, Dr Michael Kloss, who was an obstetrician. Dr Kloss subsequently had it engraved and used it in his own practice, before donating the item to the College.Metal needle holder. The needle holder's overall shape is that of a teardrop, with a rounded handle section narrowing to serrated grip points at one end. The needle holder appears to be made of a plated metal. There is a clasp at one end for locking the needle holder into place. A rounded tab on the inner aspect of the instrument is engraved with the number '50'. Ithacan Greeks have a musical tradition influenced by the Italian cantanda style that is very melodic. The bands featured in the photographs were well-known entertainers on Ithaca. The mandolin, violin and piano accordion were popular instruments. John Bliss (1795-1857) was born in Norwich Connecticut, trained as a silversmith and clockmaker in Vermont, and began in business as a jeweller in New York around 1830. In 1834, now trading as Bliss & Creighton, he made and marketed a range of nautical instruments. The business subsequently became John Bliss & Son in 1855 and John Bliss & Co. in 1857. It remained in business until 1957 when it was acquired by West Marine. The Bliss company used to make a range of instruments supplied to a variety of customers including the US Navy. An object made as an aid for marine navigation, to plot a course on a nautical map for a vessel to follow. The item was made by a well known American maker of nautical instruments and is significant in regards to it's provenience and history of the maker and his family who over the years had been innovators and makers of various types of nautical instruments since 1795.
