Joseph Wilder, a professional photographer, came to Warrnambool in 1860 and took a series of photographs, two of which survive today. One was of the local Volunteer Corps and the other was a series of photographs taken from Cannon Hill showing Merri Street and the town and buildings beyond. It seems that copies of these last-mentioned photographs were framed to produce a large panoramic view of 1860 Warrnambool and one of these was given to the old Warrnambool Museum in the 1880s by James Astley Bromfield. He had established a chemist’s shop in Warrnambool in 1854 and showed his interest in the history of the young town by producing a map in 1856 showing the first landowners, a seminal resource today for historians. He again demonstrated this interest when he included the names of the people and places in the 1860 photograph he gave to the museum in the 1880s. The frame fragment was found amongst the collection of items from the old Museum at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and brought to the Historical Society to accompany the original series of photographs. Bromfield went to live in Melbourne in the 1880s. It is presumed that the plastic cover has been placed on the frame fragment at a much later date than the 1880s.This frame fragment is interesting and very important for several reasons:- 1. It is one demonstration of the interest that James Astley Bromfield had in local history 2. It came from the old Warrnambool Museum and shows how that institution kept items of historical interest 3. It gives us the names of the people and places in the Joseph Wilder photographs of 1860 that placed together form a panorama that reveals what a major section of Warrnambool looked like only 13 years after its foundation. The list enables us to correctly identify the early places and people and so is invaluable for research purposes 4. It links a Museum exhibit of the 1880s with the original 1860 photographs which are held by the Historical Society This is a piece of wood broken from a frame containing a photograph. The Warrnambool Rowing Club was formed in the 1880s when there was a renewed interest in rowing and many young men were taking up competitive rowing. The Warrnambool Rowing Club used the new boatsheds erected in 1885 by Fanny Nelson near the mouth of the Hopkins River where the Hopkins Hotel was operating (Simpson Street). This badge belonged to a member (number 333) in the 20th century but the name of the owner is unknown.This badge is of interest but has no provenance so is useful for display purposes onlyThis is a small metal badge enamelled in blue and silver. Information on the history of this knife and sheaf is not known. They were popular items for boys and young men to carry, especially when working in the bush or fishing. They are still in use today. These items have no known provenance and are useful for display only This is a belt knife, much rusted with a curved blade and a brown metal handle, silver-coloured at the top and end and brown-coloured with red and black bands near the end. The handle has a metal screw at the tip. The knife is in a leather sheaf or holder which is curved to suit the shape of the knife. It has stitching on the curved section with metal studs, two slots to enable the sheaf to be attached to a belt and a circular leather strop with a metal stud to hold the knife in place. This dictionary belonged to John Brass, an early settler in South Warrnambool. He owned several block of land and operated a lighterage business with John Young. As a lighterman and boatman he was well-known in Warrnambool. He was drowned in March 1895 while attempting to cross a temporary foot bridge across the Merri River. His house (probably in Stanley Street) was built in 1868 and remained as an interesting example of a lighterman’s cottage until1974. The dictionary probably became the property of W. Macdonald after John Brass’ death. No information has been found on this W. Macdonald. This book is of interest as it belonged to John Brass, an important early settler in South Warrnambool. This is a hard cover book of 974 pages. The cover is green with embossed patterning and lettering on the front cover and gold lettering on the spine. The book has a Preface, a Contents page, the Dictionary entries and an Appendix. There are many illustrations, from engravings on wood, scattered throughout the text. The cloth binding is coming loose and there are several loose pages. The last page is missing. The inscriptions are written in pencil and in blue ink and there are red stamps of John Brass. This book subtitled, ‘A Story of the Amazing Ability and Fidelity of an Australian Black Tracker’, has been written in the late 1930s by Edward Daniel Oakley (1877-1962). He was the fourth child of Thomas and Eliza Oakley who had the farm, Oakbank, near the mouth of the Hopkins River, Warrnambool (Otway Road area today). Edward Oakley first worked at Saltau’s shipping office in Warrnambool then ran a dairy farm, Halifax, near Cudgee. He later had wheat farms in the Grampians area and at Willaura before returning to Warrnambool in 1923. He built a row of shops in Liebig Street and opened a boot and shoe store. He was instrumental in persuading Fletcher Jones to open a shop in Warrnambool. After he retired he researched and wrote the story of Jimmy of Murrumbar. This book is of high significance because: 1. It was written by a local Warrnambool businessman, Edward Oakley. He and other members of his family were prominent residents of the city in the late 19th and early to mid 20th centuries 2. It was written in the late 1930s and tells of the story of a young aboriginal boy, one of the early writings appreciating the talents and worth of young aborigines. This is a hard cover book of 181 pages. A buff-coloured dust cover has been pasted over the hard cover and it has a black, grey and white illustration of a young aboriginal boy being chased. This illustration is repeated in black and white on the second page. The titling on the cover is in red and black printing. The front cover has become almost detached from the pages. This book was given in 1941 as a prize to Shirley MacDonald from the South Warrnambool Sunday School. This Sunday School was operated by the South Warrnambool Presbyterian Church and existed from 1902 to 2004. The church was in MacDonald Street which was named after John MacDonald, an early teacher and auctioneer in Warrnambool but no details have been found on Shirley MacDonald. This book is of interest as a memento from the South Warrnambool Sunday School and as an example of the type of book given as prizes to young girls in Warrnambool during World War Two. This is a hard cover book of 256 pages. The cover is red with black lettering and the there is a dust cover partly pasted onto the hard cover. The dust cover is multi-coloured with an image of a river scene (man in trouble in the water with a woman trying to help him) on the front and a horse and rider on the spine. The lettering on the dust cover is in yellow and dark blue tonings. The book has become detached from the pages at the back. This book, written for girls by the English novelist, Bessie Marchant, was given as a prize to Claire Gilbert. She was the daughter of Roy and Miriam Gilbert and lived in Coulstock Street. Her father worked at Swintons Store in Warrnambool. She would have been at school in the 1940s. She married a farmer, Ainslie Crothers. It is presumed that ‘Y.W.L’ stands for ‘Young Women’s League’, but no Warrnambool group with this name has been found (apart from a Young Women’s Association run by the Presbyterian Church in the 1920s). This book is of interest as it belonged to a local girl, Claire Gilbert, at school in the 1940s. This is a hard cover book of 152 pages with 16 pages at the back giving information on other books published by the same company. The cover is green with the title information enclosed in dark red text boxes with green printing. The spine has red printing with red lines and squares for ornamentation. This book has been given as an end-of-year prize to someone in the Warrnambool Corps in 1904. As the book is for a young person it is presumed that the recipient was in the Cadet Corps section of the local Volunteer Corps. Members of the Cadet Corps were usually from a unit formed within a school. As neither the Warrnambool Agricultural High School nor the Warrambool Technical School were established at that time the recipient was probably a pupil at a private boys’ school. This book is of interest as a prize given by the Warrnambool Corps to a local Warrnambool boy in 1904. It will be of greater interest if we can decipher the name of the Sergeant-Major and the name of the recipient. This is a hard cover book of 160 pages. It has an olive-green cover with an image in red, black and yellow of a young boy in front of some buildings. The front cover has black and red lettering and the spine has an image of a woman and the lettering in gold and red. The book has a full page black and white illustration at the front of the book and there are 18 chapters of text. This cup, saucer and plate are part of a tea set. It was given by Eva Carmichael, a survivor of the ship Loch Ard which was wrecked near Port Campbell in 1878, to Jane Shields, the young woman who supported her while she was recovering from her ordeal at Glenample homestead at Princetown. The two women remained friends after Eva Carmichael returned to her home in Britain and was married. Jane Shields also married and it was when her daughter visited Eva in England that she was given the tea set to take back home to her mother. Jane died in 1932 and Eva died in 1934 and the tea set was inherited by Jane’s daughters. In 1975 Jane’s daughter, Mrs Ann Fuller, donated a cup, saucer and plate to the Warrnambool and District Historical Society. The handle of the cup was mended. These items (cup, saucer and plate) are of high significance as they are closely connected to the wreck of the Loch Ard, and one of the two survivors, Eva Carmichael. Memorabilia connected to Eva Carmichael are precious and rare. These china items (cup, saucer and plate) are coloured royal blue and gold. .1 The cup has a gilt rim on the cup edge and base. There is a small crack on the side of the cup and the handle has been broken and mended. .2 The saucer is glazed on both sides with a small fault in the middle. This is the programme of a musical production, ‘Half a Sixpence’ by the Warrnambool Holiday Actors. This company began in 1985 when a group of students from St Ann’s College and Christian Brothers College, Warrnambool (now merged to form the present day school, Emmanuel College), staged a musical production. The next year it was decided to extend membership to students across the district and membership today is still restricted to school students and young people. The Holiday Actors continue today with musical productions, mostly staged in school holidays. This programme is of interest as an example of the productions staged by the Warrnambool-based theatre company, Holiday Actors. This is a booklet of 20 pages, a programme for the musical ‘Half a Sixpence’. The front cover is yellow with images of a musical score, a sixpence cut in half and the Holiday Actors logo in red printing. The back cover has advertisements. This is a programme of a concert given by the pupils of the Frances Sinclair Dancing Academy in Warrnambool. The programme included orchestra and other musical items, dances, short skits or plays and solo singing. Most of the pupils of the dancing academy were young girls. The title of the concert, ‘Lyndoch Revue’, may indicate that the proceeds of the concert were given to the Lyndoch Aged Care Centre in Warrnambool. This programme is of interest because it is a good example of the type of concert given by pupils of a Warrnambool dancing academy in the mid 20th century. The donor of this item, Lynette Wright, nee Bristol, was a performer in the concert, one of the ‘petite ballerinas’. This is a buff-coloured sheet of paper folded in two to make four pages. The edges of the first and third pages have red decorative scroll work and the front cover has an image of a 19th century lady doing needlework. The lettering is in brown type. Margaret Jukes (nee McWilliams) married Alfred Meredith Jukes in Melbourne in 1853 and they moved to Warrnambool in 1856. She and Alfred had nine children one of whom died in infancy and four who died in young adulthood. Margaret was widowed in 1872, the year of the birth of their youngest child. A report of her funeral service in the Parish Record notes her "aged and much honored life". The hymns chosen "all were in quiet harmony with the remembrance of one whose daily life was an example and who held always a given trust in the over-ruling providence of God". It records the "peaceful closing of a well spent life".The Jukes name is associated with Jukes Street in East Warrnambool, and with the property named "Belvedere" in Ferguson Street, East Warrnambool. According to the front page this autograph book belonged to Patricia Spencer of Spencer Street, Dartmoor. Dartmoor is a small settlement on the Princes Highway between Heywood and the South Australian border. It was first settled in the late 1850s and the main industry is the processing of timber from the surrounding pine plantations. Patricia Spencer attended Warrnambool High School in the late1930s and this album contains a number of entries from Warrnambool High School in 1938. It also has a page of eleven signatures of the Head Master, George Langley and other teachers from Warrnambool High School. There are also entries from people from Mortlake and Panmure and other entries with the person’s address not indicated. Autograph books such as this one were commonly owned by young people in the 19th and 20th centuries (up to about 1950) and were very popular with young girls.This album, although incomplete and tattered, is of interest because it is a good example of the social custom, more popular a couple of generations back than it is today, of young people owning and obtaining signatures and verses from their friends and acquaintances. It is also important because it contains signatures of Warrnambool High School teachers in 1938 and there are other entries of interest. This is a small autograph album that was originally bound with a cardboard cover with red leather backing but now has no front cover and only part of the back cover. The pages are all loose and the front section (buff-coloured) has a cardboard piece with felt padding. The pages are coloured in a variety of pastel tones and there are many handwritten entries of verses and signatures, with several from the ‘B’ Form, 1938, of ‘W.H.S. (Warrnambool High School). The album appears to have belonged to Patricia Spencer from Dartmoor. Some of the pages are torn and stained. This is the programme of a concert staged in Warrnambool in the 1950s. The production was put on by Frances Sinclair and Company and was presented and directed by Fred Utting. The performers included small children, mainly girls, ballerinas and an orchestra. Frances Sinclair also had a shop in Liebig Street in the 1950s called the Olympic Sportswear.This programme is of interest because it is an example of the type of entertainment provided in Warrnambool in the 1950s with the performers from a local company teaching dance and movement to young local people. The donor of the programme, Lyn Wright, was herself one of the ‘Tiny Tots’ performers. The donor of the programme was Alan Lane, a bus company proprietor in Warrnambool and a well-known businessman and supporter of the arts in the city. This is a sheet of paper folded in two to make four pages. The paper has been folded so as to make the first page of a smaller width than the second and third pages. The program is buff-coloured with a decorative green border on the front and third pages. The programme printing is in brown type. This item is the financial statement of the Warrnambool Young Men's Club In 1882. The Young Men's Club situated in Kepler Street was formerly the Warrnambool Club Hotel building which had opened in 1873 by John Amon Smith. In 1877 it was renamed The Union Club Hotel but it closed in 1879. The Young Men's Club took over the building and incorporated a temperance hotel which opened in 1879. In 1883 the Warrnambool Young Men's Club and Temperance Hotel Company building was sold because of financial loss. This item is of interest as a memento of the 19th century Warrnambool Young Men's Club. These two flyers concern the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute Exhibition of Arts and Manufactures held in the Orderly Room over eight days in 1879-1880. The exhibition aimed to encourage local industries and to stimulate young people to manufacture and exhibit specimens of their skills in the various industries and arts. The admission was one shilling for adults and half price for children under 14. The exhibition was not very profitable with only seven pounds going into the Mechanics' Institute funds. This is a dress for a young girl aged about twelve. It seems to date from the late 19th century and would have been worn at a wedding or a family celebration. This dress is a fine example of vintage clothing and is a valued display item.The dress is made of fine muslin. It has a round neck with lace edging, the gathered skirt has pin tucks with a spoke stitched wide hem. There is lace insertion at the waist and on each shoulder. On the three quarter sleeves there is lace edging at the cuffs. The bodice has machine made embroidery, spoke stitching and tucks. These factories later became part of the Koroit FactoryThese two memorandums of association document the formation of two early butter and cheese factories in the Koroit and Tower Hill area, listing the first directors. A meeting at the Koroit Town Hall on May 23, 1888, unanimously decided to form the Koroit and Tower Hill Butter Factory coy. Ltd. Mr W J Anderson started the movement to establish a butter factory to suit the convenience of the share farmers of the Tower Hill Park estate in the early 1890's. This cup, made in Melbourne, is a 1946 award for a table tennis competition in the Warrnambool district. The P.C.S.A. may stand for Presbyterian & Congregational Sports Association, with the trophy being won by the Congregational Church team. The donor’s initials, W.Y.M.C., may stand for Warrnambool Young Men’s Club. The Warrnambool Congregational Church was founded in 1862 with a church opened in Liebig Street in 1864. This church was sold and a new one opened in Henna Street in 1940. In 1979, after the Congregational Church merged with the Methodist Church, the Henna Street church was sold to the Salvation Army.This cup is of interest as an example of a Warrnambool sports trophy given over 70 years ago.This is a small silver cup mounted on a brown Bakelite base. These two soda syphons were used to dispense soda water. They are marked ‘J. Fletcher’ with one of the bottles having the extra label of ‘Reeves’. The bottles come from the cordial factory in Koroit Street, Warrnambool. John Fletcher worked as a young boy in Rowley’s cordial factory in Banyan Street, Warrnambool and then worked for John Davis who had established the Union Cordial Factory in Koroit Street in the 1860s. John Fletcher bought the Davis business in 1885 and operated this factory until 1930. He then sold to Ralph Reeves who initially used the Fletcher bottles and syphons. At least one of these syphons comes from the Koroit Street factory during the proprietorship of Ralph Reeves.These soda syphons are of interest as they come from a local Warrnambool cordial factory in Koroit Street. Cordial manufacturing was an important industry in Warrnambool for over100 years. These are two soda syphons made of glass with heavy round bases and ridged surfaces on the bottle bodies. The metal tops contain the pump and valve mechanisms and the inside of the bottles have glass tubes attached to the top mechanisms. The sides of the bottle have the Fletcher trade mark symbol of the stylized letters J and F, Both metal tops are corroded. Both bottles contain a small amount of liquid.‘J. Fletcher’ “J. These three badges were issued as fund raisers on Children's Day in 1918,1919 and 1941. The Children's Flower day arose out of the League of Young Gardeners established in 1916 to assist the war effort by encouraging children to cultivate garden plots at home and at school. The Children's Flower Day included lectures and lessons at school related to garden cultivation. This advertising card comes from the Warrnambool business of Swintons Pty Ltd. William and Ann Swinton migrated to Australia in 1854 and for a decade William Swinton worked as a builder and carpenter in the Warrnambool area. In 1865 he opened a store in Timor Street, Warrnambool, selling groceries, hardware, glassware and china. By 1888 the business was known as William Swinton and Sons. Branch stores were opened in Cudgee, Nullawarre, Wangoom, West Warrnambool and South Warrnambool. After William Swinton died in 1901 his son Robert became the first managing director of Swintons Pty Ltd. In 1934 the business split with George Swinton and Sons selling furnishings, clothing and glassware and Swintons Pty Ltd selling seeds, produce and hardware. Today the Swinton family still operates a furniture and bedding store in Timor Street. This card is of interest as it is a memento of the Warrnambool business of Swinton Pty Ltd. The current Swinton business in Timor Street is the oldest family business in Warrnambool and with the name Swinton associated with Timor Street businesses for over 150 years, it is amongst the oldest family businesses in Australia. This is a piece of cardboard torn in half but joined together with adhesive tape. The cardboard originally had a pink or white background but it is now very stained. The card has a red border with ornamental corners and a black and white photograph of a woman using a telephone and a young girl. The card also has dark blue printing. These items have no provenance but would be useful for display purposes. They are typical of the Victorian era displaying the romanticized beauty of children and young women. Flowers, gardens and pets were also displayed in this manner. This is all amply displayed in these two prints. Items were also quite readily and cheaply mass produced and thus available for many people to cheaply decorate their homes in the latest styles. Reproduction was possible and popular resulting in an enduring style which could be said to be eclectic The Victorian Era is named after the reigning monarch, of the second half of the 19th century Queen Victoria.This pair of prints has little provenance but being typical of the era will be useful for display. These are a matching pair of framed prints of a young boy and girl with a wide dark green border around the edge with a row of dots on the outside of the glass. The boy is holding posy of violets and the girl a fan. The edge is finished in a metal, possibly tin. Both are backed with heavy card. These bottles are known as marble stopper bottles. This type of bottle was filled upside down so that as soon as the filling stopped the stopper was forced down to seal the bottle against the rubber ring. Pressure inside the bottle would keep the marble pressed against the top of the bottle. To open the bottle the marble was pressed down where it would fall into the neck chamber below. The marble would stay inside the chamber when the bottle was tilted up for drinking. These bottles have come from the aerated waters factory of John Fletcher of Warrnambool. This factory in Koroit Street was established in the mid 19th century by John Davis. As a young boy John Fletcher worked at the cordial factory of John Rowley in Banyan Street, Warrnambool and then worked for a number of years for John Davis at his Union Cordial Factory. In 1885 John Fletcher succeeded John Davis and continued in this business until 1930.. The business was then taken over by Ralph Reeves. John Fletcher manufactured aerated waters, soda, tonic waters, lemonade, ginger ale, hop beer, hop bitters, sarsaparilla and cordials. These bottles are of interest firstly because they are good examples of marble stopper bottles, no longer in use today. They are also important because they are John Fletcher bottles and he was a prominent soft drinks manufacturer in Warrnambool for over 40 years. These four bottles are made of green coloured glass. They have a round body with deep indentations at the top, narrowing the entrance to the neck which is short and thick. The top opening is made of thick moulded glass. A glass marble is loose in the neck section. The rubber ring inside the neck is missing. This is a glass bottle with a heavy round base and a rounded body which is markedly indented at the top, causing the aperture inside to be narrowed. The neck is rounded and tapers to the moulded glass opening at the top. There is a round piece of red rubber inside the top of the bottle. A green glass marble is loose in the neck section. The lettering giving details of the manufacturer is embedded into the glass.
