This collection of glasses and cases was donated by Miss Connie Cruickshank. She was part of the family of Orbost's first doctor, Dr James Kerr. As the 19th Century came to a close, more and more people wore their eyeglasses everyday. A popular style of inexpensive, everyday spectacles was the pince-nez. French for "pinch nose," the pince-nez was first developed in France circa 1840 and began to be imported after the 1850s. Pince-nez have no temples, but are fit snugly on the bridge of the nose. Pince- nez could be uncomfortable to wear and broke often from falling off the nose. These items demonstrate how glasses' styles have changed over time. These are 1907 cheque book butts from the Bank of Australasia. The names in the book suggest that they came from the Warrnambool branch of this bank. A branch of the Bank of Australasia was established in Warrnambool in 1854 with new premises erected for the bank at the corner of Timor and Kepler Street in 1860. In 1953 the Bank of Australasia became the A.N.Z. Bank and the building in Kepler Street was closed. The butts are mainly drawn to an unidentified person, ‘self’ but some names included are ‘Dr E.J. Connell’, ‘O’Mahony’ (solicitor), ‘F. Tozer’, ‘A Bostock’, ‘P. Manifold’. These are all local Warrnambool names of the early 20th century.This cheque butt is of some interest as an example of the cheques issued by an individual in the early 20th century. The names in the butts are also of interest as prominent residents of Warrnambool at the time.This is a 1907 cheque book butt with a pale blue cover and 30 butts of cheques drawn from the Bank of Australasia. The last cheque has been poorly removed and part of the cheque is still in the book. Information on the Bank of Australasia policies is on the inside front cover and the butts have blue printed numbers on them. The information re the cheques drawn is handwritten in black ink. This glass is a souvenir of the 75th anniversary of the founding of Warrnambool Technical School. This school was established in Timor Street Warrnambool in 1913 and was relocated to Caramut Street Warrnambool in the 1970s. The Timor Street site now has the campus of South West TAFE (Technical and Further Education). Warrnambool Technical School in Caramut Road was re-named Brauer College in 1990 to reflect the change to a broad secondary curriculum embracing both technical and general educational subjects. The name also honours Dr Alfred Brauer, a well-known Warrnambool doctor with a strong involvement in local schools. This spoon has been produced as a souvenir of Brauer College in Warrnambool. It would have been issued to, or bought by Brauer College students, ex-students, teachers and other community members interested in the school. Brauer College has its origins in the establishment of Warrnambool Technical School in Timor Street, Warrnambool in 1913. It later became Warrnambool Technical College and the Technical School section was re-located to Caramut Road in Warrnambool in the 1970s. Believed to have been acquired from Dr Frank Forster. Eupnine Vernade was a product used in the early 20th century for the treatment of bronchitis, asthma, emphysema and bronchiectasis adjuvant in the treatment of sequaelae of influenza. It contained 10% caffeine iodide, and "exerts an intense action on the respiratory tract, stimulating the bronchial secretion and facilitating expectoration. It regulates and strengthens the heart, contracts the blood vessels of the splanchnic area, but dilates those of the heart and lung. It "also exerts a powerful diuretic action, thus diminishing the strain on the heart." The item is possibly part of an irrigation set. Mary Howlett (1840-1922) began practising as a country midwife in 1866 in the western district of Victoria. She qualified as a 'ladies monthly nurse' in 1887 and continued to practise as a nurse and midwife until 1920.She began her six months training at the Melbourne Lying-In Hospital. She was known by many as 'Auntie', and her career spanned more than 50 years. Dr Thomas Small designed this ether anaesthesia and analgesia machine while he was an Honorary Medical Officer at the Royal Women's Hospital in Sydney during the 1930s. The inhaler is compact and portable. Initially, Small experimented with other agents for the relief of labour pain but was not happy with any of them. He also tried various agents on himself, including nitrous oxide/oxygen, chloroform and ethyl chloride. Finally he settled on ether via a Clover inhaler as the best analgesic. This inhaler is only described in use in Australia and New Zealand, although it was used for almost 40 years. Black leather box with leather handle, lockable latches on either side and drop down front case panel containing a metal ether inhaler and length of black corrugated rubber hose with one end attached to the inhaler and the other end open for attaching a mask. The metal inhaler drum is circular and attached to the floor of the case with a small tap/lever to one side and a mixing valve on the top near the hose connection. The lever has incised gradings of quarter increments from 0 to 1. This is a large metal framework covered in gauze, the whole mask completely enclosing the patient's face excluding any possibility of carbon dioxide being excreted. This object was found in the possession of the Italian Army in Libya in 1940, and donated to the museum by Dr Geoffrey Kaye. Gustave Julliard, of Geneva, after a death from chloroform had occurred in his practice, abandoned the use of that anaesthetic and adopted ether. He administered it from a large, wire frame, the outside of which was covered with waxed cloth to make it impermeable to air, the inside with surgical gauze on to which the ether was poured. This book was owned by the late Dr Elizabeth Kerr and was donated to the Museum by the executor of her estate, Margaret Cameron. It was produced by Patons and Baldwins and contains knitting patterns for mens garments. Several of these patterns could be knitted for use by the Armed Forces, including a balaclava and a splint cover for a Bohler Walking Iron (a type of splint used where the foot must not touch the ground or bear any weight, eg. in cases of ulceration). If this bride was the same as in the newspaper article that was in the album, it gives the name of the bride as Lexie Curtin and the bridesmaid as Nora Southern. The groom was Dr John Ferguson who was also a member of Legacy for some years. The wedding was held at St Patrick's Cathedral. Holmbush at 1267 Burke road, was one of the properties that Legacy used for Junior Legatees. It was purchased 1942. This box contains typewriter equipment for a Remington typewriter. The Remington company was founded in U.S.A. and it produced the first typewriter for commercial use in 1873. In 1886 the Remington family business was sold but the name was retained and typewriters with the Remington Rand brand name were sold from 1927 on. Typewriters have now been replaced by computers. This box of equipment belonged to Dr Horace Holmes who would have used a typewriter in his medical practice in Warrnambool in the first half of the 20th century and perhaps would also have used a typewriter in the activities of the many community groups with which he was associated. Horace Iles Holmes (1877-1959) was born and educated in Tasmania and completed a medical degree at the University of Melbourne. He commenced a practice at Warrnambool in 1906 and was the honorary Medical Officer at the Warrnambool Hospital and Warrnambool’s Health Officer. His practice was at ‘Ierne’, at the corner of Spence and Kepler Streets. He was an early member of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons and was prominent in community affairs (foundation President of the Warrnambool Rotary Club, a member of the Warrnambool Masonic Lodge for over 50 years, a Warrnambool Hospital Committee member, a long-term Trustee of the Warrnambool Methodist Church and President of the Lyndoch Hostel for the Aged Committee. Dr Holmes also had agricultural interests and enjoyed fishing, bowls and golf. This box of typewriter equipment is of interest as an item in the collection of Horace Iles Holmes, a doctor who was prominently associated with the professional and community life of Warrnambool for over 50 years. This is a rectangular-shaped black cardboard box with the name ‘Remington’ on it. It is heavily stained inside. Victorian Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (VIOSH) Australia is the Asia-Pacific centre for teaching and research in occupational health and safety (OHS) and is known as one of Australia's leaders on the field. VIOSH has a global reputation for its innovative approach within the field of OHS management. VIOSH had its first intake of students in 1979. At that time the Institution was known as the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. In 1990 it became known as Ballarat University College, then in 1994 as University of Ballarat. It was 2014 that it became Federation University. VIOSH Australia students are safety managers, senior advisors and experienced OHS professionals. They come from all over Australia and industry. Students are taught active research and enquiry; rather than textbook learning and a one-size fits all approach. VIOSH accepts people into the Graduate Diploma of Occupational Hazard Management who have no undergraduate degree - on the basis of extensive work experience and knowledge. An Agreement between the Commonwealth of Australia and Doctors Else and Cowley of VIOSH was made in relation to Consultancy Services for a review of Occupational Safety in the Antarctic Division and on Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions. Mrs Martha Closter ( Kloster), of Oakleigh purchased the Melber Sewing Machine in 1909 and gave it to her daughter Mary when she and Alonzo Box married in 1918 and settled in Moorabbin Shire. This document was donated by a descendant of the Box family in 1985.William and Elizabeth Box purchased 'Box Cottage' in 1865 from a pioneer settler who had bought part of the land noted in Dendy's Special Survey 1841 Brighton. They raised their family there and established a market garden to supply produce to the population of Melbourne.
