Programme of a Legacy Demonstration at the Melbourne Town Hall in 1972. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and eurythmics, the Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to 1979, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall or Olympic Pool Stadium. The beautiful costumes were made by members of the Junior Legacy Mothers' Club and the Melbourne Legacy Wives' Association. These costumes were Russian cossack dancers. The year was assumed to be 1972 as that was one year that 4th August was a Friday. A record of a Junior Legacy demonstration. The annual demonstrations showcased the amount of effort the children put into their classes.White card printed on both sides and folded in half. Front page is of two Junior Legatees in costume dancing with the Legacy Torch in the top righthand corner. Middle pages detail the times of Boy's and Girl's classes together with the concert programme. David Miller (Dave) Mair (1879-1938) married Lily Vipond Deakin (1890-1945) in 1910. They had 5 children: Geoffrey David (1913-1970), Beryl (1916-1976), Gwynneth (1917-1997), Isabel Lillian (1921-1997) and Shirley Inez (1928-1968). Personal communication from Laurie Newton, Beryl's daughter: Dave and Lily initially lived in East Melbourne after they married. Dave walked across the gardens to work at the MCG. He never drove or owned a car. Geoffrey, Beryl and Gwynneth were born in East Melbourne. They subsequently moved to Louise Avenue, Mont Albert and Isabel may have been born while they were there. Later they purchased 20 Barton Street, Mont Albert. Shirley was born after they moved to Barton Street. Electoral roll details: 1919 1922 24 Louise Avenue, Mont Albert 1924 20 Barton Street, Mont Albert Dave Mair was a very keen sportsman. This is part of a large donation of material from the Deakin, Mair and Young families. Tin, Swallow & Ariell, Ltd
Biscuit tin: late 19th century Swallow & Ariell operated continuously in Port Melbourne from 1858 to 1991. The former Swallow & Ariell’s factory buildings, now The Anchorage, continue to add interest and pleasure along Stokes, Rouse and Princes Streets. Thomas Swallow, born in Reading, travelled to California and Ballarat before setting up a business making ships biscuits in Port Melbourne. His business partner Ariell died in 1877. He then went into partnership with Frederick Derham, his son in law. Company farms around Shepparton provided much of its wheat, and after 1889 most was ground into flour on the Port Melbourne premises. For the year ending 1 May 1920, the factory used 51 tons of butter, 2,740 eggs and produced more than 66 lines of biscuits. They also made puddings, elaborate cakes and ice cream. S & A was a significant employer – locally referred to as S & A College. At the height of the South African war it employed 1900 workers but even in 1991 it employed 450 people.Pink and brown clover-shaped ornamental biscuit tin decorated with pictures of a girl (central panel), 2 dogs (lower section), 2 rabbits (upper left-side panel) and 2 birds (upper right-hand panel. Brochure to accompany the Soroptimist Quilt Project 2000. The quilt was made by members of seventeen Soroptimist International clubs across Victoria to celebrate the Year 2000. The quilt squares illustrate some of the projects initiated, funded and supported by Victorian Soroptimists as well as illustrations of broader affiliations and responsibilities, including to the UN. Examples include the S.I.A.M. (Soroptimist International Aids Mediation) project by SI Berwick in Northern Thai villages which established industries and health programs for women and girls as viable alternatives to the sex industry. Revegetation of woodlands, wetlands and cleared land by SI Deakin. Donation of toiletries to women's shelters, police lock ups and church emergency centres in the western suburbs of Melbourne by SI Cut Paw Paw. Founded in 1921, Soroptimist International is a global volunteer movement with a network of around 72,000 club members in 121 countries. Advocating for human rights and gender equality, at the heart of Soroptimist International’s advocacy is its work across seven UN Centres, where UN representatives ensure that the voices of women and girls are heard. Memberships work on grassroots projects that help women and girls achieve their individual and collective potential, realise aspirations and have an equal voice in communities worldwide. It has a flourishing Club in Geelong. The quilt has been displayed in Soroptimist Headquarters Victoria at 383 Toorak Road, South Yarra (Soroptimist House) since touring the State of Victoria in 2000. Three photos of a function held at Legacy House to celebrate the 80th birthday of Miss Enez Domec Carre. Enez was the instructor for the girls' classes for many years, she organised many annual demonstrations and was held in high regard by Legacy. The library at Legacy House is named in her honour. See also a newspaper article at 00978 which outlines her achievements, a summary of her career at 00458 and 00129. She was a former Miss Victoria and was known for her physical education skills and for introducing grace and culture to Melbourne. In 1932 she joined Melbourne Legacy as assistant to Mrs Gilles (wife of a Legatee) later became the chief instructor of girls' physical education until she retired aged 65. In the post World War II baby boom the Legacy evening classes were attended by about 400 girls. She helped organise Legacy Widows and Legatee wives to sew the costumes for performances. Among her proudest moments was a display by 1000 Junior Legatees at the MCG during the 1954 visit of Queen Elizabeth II. As well her work for Legacy she ran physical education, ballroom dancing and debutante preparation classes in Windsor, Elsternwick, Gardenvale and Geelong. She also held a position on the Board of Studies and as director of physical education in Catholic Schools. Recognition of her work included being awarded an MBE in 1971. And in 1997 she received Legacy's highest award, the title of Guest of Honour, for her years of service. Photos were in a scrapbook of photos spanning 1983 to 1991. Clarendon Presbyterian Ladies' College won the accolade consistently from 1963 - 1970. paralleled the BPSA (Ballarat Public Schools Association) which morphed to become coed in the mid 70s, when College and Grammar became coed, retaining the BPSA acronym. Presented to the Ballarat College in 1945 by Miss Shaw. Miss Shaw was Principal of the Clarendon Presbyterian Ladies College 1927 - 1934. She left to take up the principalship of the Presbyterian Girls' College at Glen Osmond South Australia. Miss Shaw later returned as Principal of her former school at geelong, where her outstanding controbution to education in Victoria was recognised by the award of the Order of the British Empire. Example of ongoing commmunity support of the school. GIDGET was written by Frederick Kohner the father of the real Gidget, Kathy Kohner Zuckerman. The book is based on Kathy's experiences as a 15 year old girl at Malibu Beach, Southern California during the summer of 1957 discovering Moondoggie, the Big Kahuna and surfing. The book was made into a highly succesful feature film of the same name, released in 1959 with Sandra Dee playing the star role of Gidget.GIDGET is socially and culturally significant because it was one of the first mainstream books to explore the surfing sub-culture of Southern California. This is a reference written on 14th October, 1942, by the Head of the Art Department at the School of Mines and Industries Bendigo, Ernest H. Duncan, for a former pupil, Miss Ivy Jack. It is a complimentary reference assuring 'To Whom it May Concern' that Miss Jack 'is a fine type of girl possessing many fine qualities...' and that she has '...proved herself an energetic, careful and reliable student with ability in Dressmaking above the average.'This is significant in relation to the history of the Bendigo School of Mines and Industries. It gives an insight into the type of courses being offered by the school in 1942, as well as an insight into how references for individuals were written in the 1940's, as opposed to the way they are written in 2013. In 1897 it was the home of the Walker family; Joyce Walker later became matron of Mosgiel Hospital. In 1902 it became the first site of Milverton Girls School. From 1930s to 1960s it was home to Miss Marjorie Vahland, a locally well-known nursing sister.Colour photo of the front of Tavistock at 192 Union Road, Surrey Hills before restoration during 1978-1982. The house is Victorian in style, of red brick construction with a patterned slate tile roof and decorative chimneys. Legacy raised funds from the sale of Christmas cards for many years. In 1989 they chose artwork by a Junior Legatee (name not known at the moment) to feature on the cards. Also a photo of a girl in a motorised wheel chair selling the Christmas cards and Legacy puddings in a street. Photos were taken by Susie Howard who was publicity officer for Legacy at the time.
