Manufactured Object, 'Crest' Home Hair Perm Kit in box, c1950
A permanent hairstyle, commonly called a perm or "permanent" is a hairstyle consisting of styles set into the hair lasting a number of months using thermal or chemical means. In the latter method, chemicals are applied to the hair, which is then wrapped around forms / rods to produce hairstyles with varying degrees of wave or curls. Usually this styling is performed by Hairdressers, in Beauty Salons, however, manufacturers appealing to the 'thriftiness' of the post world war 2 women produced products that could be used at home. It became very popular for women in the new estates to gather with their neighbours to give each other this new 'Home perm' with some success and failure. Gladys Reed used this type of Home perm while a resident of City of Moorabbin c 1950Typical Home Hair Perming equipment used to style their own hair by women in City of Moorabbin c1950A cardboard box containing solution, equipment and instruction booklet for home treatment of hair to produce permanent waves.hairdressers, hairdressing equipment, permanent wave, hair fashion, hair styling 1950, grooming, personal effects, early settlers, post world war 2 estates moorabbin, reed gladys. reed george, clark judy, bentleigh, moorabbin, highett, ormond. -

plan, before 1948
Drainage infrastructure was developed and maintained in this region by the Snowy River Improvement Trust. The Trust was administered by a local committee and its activities funded by a local rate charged on the farmers and land owners in the Trust’s designated district. The level of the rate charged by the Trust was designed to be proportionate to the benefit derived from the works undertaken. Financial assistance was provided by the State Government from time to time for specific projects such as post flood repairs but not for new capital works. The Trust undertook new drainage and river management works including tree planting, rock beach construction and servicing of the drains and flood gates. The Trust also provided a personal flood warning service to the farmers in its district. The Trust ceased to operate in 1997 with the advent of the East Gippsland Catchment Management Authority. The infrastructure developed by the Trust continues to provide a service to the farmers in the region. (ref. 4 East Gippsland CMA Submission to Inquiry into Flood Mitigation Infrastructure in Victoria) This plan is significant as a historical document. The Snowy River Improvement Trust was vital to the Orbost district because of its ability to apply local knowledge and to engage the local farming community.A large plan of divisions of land for the purpose of levying the Snowy River Improvement District - Bete Bolong, Orbost, Waygara, Newmerella and Orbost East. book, The Bridge, 1930's
This book was written by Dr J. J. C. Bradfield, (John Job Crew), 1867-1943. Dr JJC Bradfield was a visionary Australian engineer who worked with enormous energy and vision to build the infrastructure which he foresaw that Sydney would need as it grew. As early as 1903 Bradfield was making the case for the Sydney Harbour Bridge, in his presidential address as President of the Sydney University Engineering Society. Bradfield’s proposal — at that stage for a cantilever bridge between Dawes Point and Milsons Point — won the committee’s support and they recommended it be accepted. However, the First World War put a stop to these plans. While a bill to authorise the project passed the lower house of the NSW parliament in 1916, it failed to pass the upper house, on the grounds that funds should not be diverted from the war effort. With the war over, in 1922 the Sydney Harbour Bridge Act was passed by the NSW Parliament. The Sydney Harbour Bridge was officially opened in 1932 after Museum and St James railway stations were built. This book was written from the story broadcast by Dr. J.J.C. Bradfield. This item is a useful reference tool.A staple soft cover 16 pp booklet with a buff coloured cover. It has a sketch of the Sydney Harbour Bridge behind the title "The Bridge" in dark brown print. It contains information and photographs of the history and construction of Sydney Harbour Bridge.sydney-harbour-bridge bradfield-dr-j-j-c -

flat irons, C 1890's - 1910
Sad irons, also called flat irons or smoothing irons, are shaped pieces of metal that are flat and polished on one side and have a handle attached to the other, created for the purpose of de-wrinkling fabric. “Sad” is an Old English word for “solid,” and the term “sad iron” is often used to distinguish the largest and heaviest of flat irons. They often had a trivet on which to rest the hot iron. Two triangular flat irons. They are made of solid cast iron with hollow iron handles. Flat irons (often referred to as sad irons) were heated on trivets in front of open fires, or on the tops of closed ranges, or on specially-designed iron stoves in larger laundries. They were made in numbered series which related to their size, although there was no standardisation in the series between manufacturers. these two are Salter brands. 1872.1 is a No 7 and 1872.2 is a No 8 and slightly heavier.Salter 7 Salter 6flat-iron sad-iron domestic-appliance laundry -
