George Edwin Wells was born in Oxford in 1826. He served an apprenticeship as a coachbuilder and in 1841 he went to New Zealand. He was returning to England in 1848 when he changed his mind in Singapore and turned around and came to Melbourne. He operated a store with Mr W Gibbs and when gold as discovered they left their wives in Melbourne and went to the gold fields of Ballarat in 1851. At this time George was newly married to Catherine Kiely. In 1852 the two men were at the Golden Gully area of the Fryers Creek gold fields, they then move to Bendigo, initially to White Hills before settling in Long Gully. They then brought their patient wives, who had only had visits from their husbands, to Bendigo. George had several successful mining ventures in Bendigo. He died in 1898. One of his sons, Alfred, married Margaret Rotherham in NSW where he was living. Alfred died in 1911 leaving Margaret with a young family. She moved to Bendigo to be nearer to family support. Alfred and Margaret's daughter, Elma Winslade Wells 91904 - 19/1/1988) became a teacher and was posted to Camp Hill Primary School. She was also heavily involved in the Scout movement in the Bendigo area.Blue hardcover scrapbook belonging to the Wells family. (Elma Wells). A framed photo of the first president of Melbourne Legacy, Legatee Harold Cohen. Harold Edward Cohen (1881-1946), soldier, lawyer, politician and businessman, was born on 25 November 1881. In 1901 Cohen was commissioned in the Field Artillery Brigade, Australian Military Forces, and was promoted captain in 1905 and major in 1909. In 1915 he was appointed commanding officer of the 6th Army Brigade, Australian Field Artillery Regiment, Australian Imperial Force, with the rank of lieutenant-colonel, serving in the Middle East, England and France until June 1919. Twice wounded and twice mentioned in dispatches, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order in 1917 and created C.M.G. in 1918. He was awarded the Volunteer Decoration in 1921 and the CBE in 1934. In 1929 Brigadier Cohen entered Parliament as the member for Melbourne South in the Legislative Council, and in 1935 transferred to the Assembly as member for Caulfield, which seat he held until 1943. During the Second World War Brigadier Cohen served in the Middle East as honorary Red Cross Commissioner overseas. This is a set of four photographs of WO2 Graham Ragless from the Royal Australian Survey Corps demonstrating the operation of Global Positioning System equipment in c1988. The photos were probably taken at the School of Military Survey (SMS), Bonegilla, VIC. Texas Instruments TI4100 portable Global Positioning System (GPS) geodetic receivers were introduced from 1986–1988. The GPS receivers and Ferranti FILS3 helicopter and vehicle mounted Inertial Positioning System (IPS) replaced the TRANSIT satellite receivers. The equipment was deployed to establish the baseline for a GPS controlled air camera and photogrammetric system to significantly reduce the requirement for ground survey to accurately control air photography for topographic mapping. Personnel from the four field survey squadrons at this time were trained at the SMS to operate the TI4100 receivers. Field survey operations using GPS and IPS equipment followed in the late 1980s. WO2 Graham Ragless progressed to the rank of WO1 and was appointed as RSM of the Army Survey Regiment from 1990 to 1992. Ammunition shell was used in a 40 lb Armstrong Rifled Breach Loading (RBL) Gun. It does not contain explosives because the projectile and explosive were separate items. The Armstrong 40 lb BL Gun There were 4 x 40lb Armstrong (RBL) Guns issued to the Ham and Beef Battery at Hastings Victoria. After the Hastings Battery field artillery disbanded, the 4 Guns were transferred from the Hastings Battery to the Warrnambool Battery field artillery in 1904. (There is a photograph of one of these guns on its carriage, pictured in front of the Orderly room (Drill Hall) at Warrnambool, which is now the Library of South West TAFE). The 40lb Armstrong Guns were recalled back to Melbourne when the government issued the updated 4.7inch QF (Quick Firing) Naval Guns, mounted on carriages, to the Warrnambool Garrison Artillery 1907. The Hastings Museum today holds one of the original 40lb Armstrong RBL guns that were at first at Hastings and then Warrnambool, evidenced by tracing the numbers on that gun. This gun has now been restored. Surviving 40 lb Armstrong BL Guns in Australia The Hastings Museum has restored one of the Guns that was at Hastings and then from 1904-1907 in Warrnambool. Without them, our sense of appreciation of local flora and fauna would be much poorer. Past-President Peter Rogers takes us through its wonderful history.

Three examples of the ammunition charge clips used during World War 1 by the Australian and allied forces. These were preloaded with five live rounds of ammunition for the SMLE .303" rifle and were a convenient method of quickly replenishing the 10 round magazine. The clip is made of stamped spring steel with a matte black paint finish. These clips were preloaded with live ammunition and carried in the soldiers ammunition pouches. Whilst in the field the clips were salvaged and reloaded with fresh rounds when the opportunity was available, ie during a lull in battle, etc.Some markings present: two examples are stamped with "E" and "ll", the other is stamped with "K" and "ll".

These three flour bags belonged to Helena Warren (nee McKeown) who was a self-taught photographer who became the local press correspondent and producer of postcard images. She was married to William John warren and lived in Newmerella. Flour bags were used for bulk purchases of flour in early to mid 20th century. They would have been laundered and re-used for storage. In earlier times empty flour bags were washed and boiled and then made into tea towels or children’s bloomers, or underwear. The flour bags are good examples of packaging and design for Australian produce which sold across Australia and overseas in the mid 20th century. Slide: The practical failure of the Act of 1856, and the fresh outburst of anti-Chinese feeling in the Buckland riots of 1857, led to Victorian Government to take further action in the latter year. (1) A residence fee was imposed on all Chinese in the colony (one pound per month - ultimately reduced, after Chinese protests, to four pound per year). (2) The co-operation of South Australia was sought, and , in 1857, the government of that colony passed a restriction act similar to the Victorian Act of 1855. Markings: 21. Between 1915 and 1951, military topographical mapping in SA was conducted by Royal Australian Survey Corps (RASvy) units based outside the state. In February 1952, Army HQ Field Survey Section (Central Command Detachment) was established in Adelaide in a drill hall at Largs Bay. It was tasked with providing map coverage in the Woomera and Southern areas of the state. The section was subsequently reorganised as Central Command Field Survey Section moving firstly to Hampstead Barracks, Hampstead in 1953 and then into accommodation at Keswick Barracks in 1954. In 1957 the Section commenced mapping operations in the NT. The Unit was relocated to the old cavalry stables in 1961 and was redesignated Central Command Survey Unit and remained there till 1973. In 1970 the Unit was redesignated 4 Fd Svy Sqn and engaged in operations conducted in PNG from 1972 to 1974 inclusive. In 1973 the Squadron moved into a brand new two-storey specially designed and purpose built building adjacent to the old building. The old building then became the Squadron Q and Map store with an interconnecting lobby to the new building. Since 1975 the Unit was involved in the 1:50,000 Mapping Programme in WA, NT, QLD, SA and conducted many other operations within Australia and overseas. Post disbandment of the Corps the old Squadron building (cavalry stables) now houses the Army Museum of South Australia (AMOSA). The Royal Australian Survey Corps was amalgimated into the Royal Australian Engineer Corps in July 1996. In the lead up to this amalgamation, 4 Field Survey Squadron Keswick Barracks, Adelaide, South Australia was disbanded in 1995. A closing Ceremony was held on 25 November 1995 at 4 Fd Svy Sqn Keswick Barracks attended by about 208 former members of the Unit. A photo was taken of attendees at that event on the day and a list was prepared of attendees. Information provided to the Bendigo Historical Society by Rohan Moresi: Rohan 'grew up on a farm near Buckrabanyule. The bat belonged to Rohan and his brothers, Grant and Alistair. At the age of twelve in early December of 1977, my father took my brothers and myself to the Queen Elizabeth Oval in Bendigo to watch a match of the newly created World Series Cricket being played. West Indies versus World XI. OI took the one cricket bat we owned and a market pen, along with me. During the course of the match I gathered all the signatures I could from players as they left the field after batting, as they sat in the stands waiting for their turn to bat, and when they were fielding close to the boundary. I remember Clive Lloyd, who was sitting in the stands when I approached him, expressing some good natured scepticism that the signatures would remain permanently on the bat as he was signing it, due to the tyupe of marker pen used. I also recall Tony Greig not stopping to sign it as he left the field after batting. I'm sure he had other more pressing issues on his mind at the time. When we returned home my father painted a type of a lacquer over each of the signatures in an attempt to ensure some sort of permanency. As it was the only cricket bat my brothers and I had, we continued to use it in our backyard games. Which goes a long way in explaining its current state. My brothers and I all left the farm in the early 1980's and I took the cricket bat with me. Since then it has remained in my possession up until now. I'm very happy to see it returned to the place of its origin, and for it to be kept in perpetuity at the Bendigo Hisgtorical Society, as it is part of the twentieth century history of Bendigo. I hope it brings some small pleasure to all who are interested in such things'. Rohan Moresi Cricket bat, blue material on handle grip of bat. Bat has signatures on the blade section. The bat was taken by Rohan Morosi, then 12, at the Queen Elizabeth Oval in December 1977, where he attended a game of the newly created World Series Cricket competition between West Indies versus World XI. This photograph shows George Temple's store which began operating C1888 opposite the post office in the main street of Orbost. The store stocked other stores at Bendoc supplying the gold fields. The men with their pack horses are on their way to the survey camp. George Temple, born in Yorkshire on 26/2/1832 was one of the earliest Orbost storekeepers. Temple's Store was on the corner of Ruskin and Nicholson Streets opposite the post office. He packed stores to the Bendoc area goldfields. The store building eventually became part of Herbert's store when he died in 1917.This item is associated with the very early history of Orbost. George and Mary Temple were early shopkeepers who operated a store opposite the Post Office for many years. Castledine has been killed in action April 18th & desire to convey to you the profound sympathy of the Minister for the Army and the Military Board. - Minister for the Army" Sapper George Ernest Castledine (1914-1941), son of Arthur Frederick and Annie Castledine, enlisted 23 January 1940 at Lower Plenty and was assigned to the 2/2 Field Company. He is buried in the Phaleron War Cemetery, Athens, Greece and is remembered on the Roll of Honour at Eltham.George was the first soldier from the Shire of Eltham to be killed in the Second World War.
