Textile, Handkerchief white edge, Circa 1918
Hankerchiefs have been used for centuries as a piece of cloth deemed useful for personal hygiene. They are usually kept in one's pocket but at times through history have been fluttered to attract attention or send a message. In harder times they proved to be a cheap item often used to add interest to an outfit. This item is one of five hankerchiefs which were brought back from France after WW1 by great uncles of Gloria Redman and have been passed down through her grandmother and mother. This item has significance as an item linked to a local family and World War 1 and as such has social, and historical significance. It is well provenanced and can be used to provide interest to the relating of a fairly common story whereby many soldiers brought or sent back small items such as hankerchiefs to their loved ones at home. Cream silk handkerchief with cream blanket stitched edge with three cream and one pink flower embroidered in each corner. Photograph - Spargo's Pyrites, Specimen Hill
Historic photo of mining at Specimen Hill. After crushing ore, the sand pyrites remaining could be treated to extract even finer gold. The sand was placed in large brick ovens to be roasted, which freed the sand of arsenic, sulphur etc, with the fumes containing these elements released into the atmosphere via a large chimney. Spargo's Pyrite Company operated from about 1870. It closed when there became a shortage of workers during WW1 and appears to have not restarted after the war.8527 Spargo's Pyrites, industrial buildings with open tank and drums. date unknownspargo's, pyrites -

Top right Australian Imperial Force 130 Horseferry Road, Westminster, S.W.1 19th April, 1919 Dear West, I send you my heartiest congratulations on the award to you of the Military Cross, of which I have only now been informed; in recognition of your very good and gallant work in our operations at Montbregain on 5th October last. When your platoon was held up by heavy fire from a strong post, you most gallantly rushed forwatd alone, and bombing the position captures the gun and crew. Later, when your flank could not make progress owing to fire from a post containing two machine guns, you crawled round to the right, and rushed this post, which you captured with one of the guns, killing three and taking another three of the garrison prisoners. On your company commander becoming casualty, you took command, and consolidated the line with good judgment and ability. throughout you displayed courage, initiative and determination of a very high order. I am indeed pleased that your splendid work has been recognised in this way. with kindest regards and good wishes to you for the future. Yours sincerely. W. H.
