Cabinet - Vinyl Records
The cabinet appears to be homemade and purposely built for the storage of a collection of vinyl records. The records are stored vertically in a 'holder' with a rectangular wooden base with soft covered wire strips well spaced and each extended to fit up to 50 records. See KVHS 18 . The stands then fit into the cabinet with the base of the holder resting on wooden ledges glued on each side allowing the records to fit in all directions. There are two levels - one on the bottom and one halfway up. Holding approximately 100 records altogether. The cabinet's door is opened with a silver push button latch. Many men made their own furniture as they had the equipment and experience to do so. During the 1950s vinyl records were played to entertain families and to educate children in the areas of music and dance. Mt Beauty didn't have TV until much later than the cities and furniture wasn't always available at the local shops.Wooden cabinet with 4 legs and a door with a silver push button latch. Book, Poco a Poco: the story of the Shire of Eltham Brass Band, November 1964, 1964
Page [i] : Prepared for the Committee of the Shire of Eltham Brass band by E. Y. Barnes. This may have been an early draft copy as it includes pen notations and corrections. Page 2: "The aim of this presentation is to give a balanced comprehensive story of the Shire of Eltham Brass Band, its origins, aims, history and operations". The Band was formed in 1954 with male members, Includes a list and biographies of bandmasters, uniforms, engagements, names of and roles of "helpers" and names of organisations which the Band has been associated. as well as names of early band members and other associated members. This document is significant in that it not only traces the development of the Shire of Eltham Brass Band (a forerunner of the current Eltham Concert Band) and of music in the area but it also gives an insight into the people and their community in the 1950s and early 1960s.Original typed manuscript with occasional photocopied sketch enclosed in a green folder. MUSIC, Bob's passion. He always carried his favourite music scores in his kit, including some hard cover grand operas. On leave, he saw as many operas as he could, taking the score along to each performance, keeping one eye on the show and the other on the music. On 29 November, 1916, while stationed at Vignacourt, Bob was given permission to play the church pipe organ for an hour or so (3 recent photos, courtesy Isabelle Godard, see attached). One day in September 1917, somewhere in Flanders, whilst visiting 2nd Division HQ, Bob had a chance meeting with the decorated infantry officer, Captain Rupert 'Sos' Wertheim (whose interrogation of German POWs crucially affected the Allies preparation for the Battle of Menin Road). He was the son of the German Jewish emigré who set up the famous Richmond-based Wertheim piano-factory in the early 1900s. Captain Wertheim asked Bob to play all the operatic pieces he could remember. (A few days later, a stray German shell hit the 2nd Div. HQ killing a number of officers)

Functional object - Spirit Level
This item was given to the Historical Society in 1972, with the donor indicating that the spirit level belonged to the Henty family. The Hentys of Portland are regarded as the first permanent settlers in the State of Victoria (1834). Stephen Henty, with his brother Edward, was involved in the whaling industry in Portland. He also had shipping interests, operating a regular Western District shipping service (‘Champion’, ‘Lady Bird’, ‘Western’, ‘Edina’ etc) and a property ‘Cadnook’, near Harrow. Stephen Henty had close connections with Warrnambool not only because of his shipping interests but also because he was the brother-in-law of an early Warrnambool Harbour Master, Captain Frank Helpman. A spirit level was an essential tool for early settlers as they often built their own homes and constructed the roads nearby, needing to ascertain if what was being constructed was on level ground. It does not seem possible to establish whether this item belonged to the Henty family or to a Henty property. But in the Historical Society collection we have a piece of sheet music which includes the handwriting ‘Mrs Smalpaige, Cadnook’, ‘S. J. Henty’ and the date ‘8th August 1859’. Also the Warrnambool Art Gallery has an authentic Henty piano dating from 1837 and Stephen Henty’s wife died in Hamilton in 1906 so it is possible that the spirit level came to us from a Henty family descendant living nearby via Mr N. Kelly. If the Henty provenance can be proved then this item is of high significance. This is an unvarnished wooden spirit level, apparently home made, with a bubble in the centre. The top has been attached with eight screws, now much rusted. There appears to be some letters in the bubble area but they have not been deciphered “Hentys spirit level, oldest in Australia” is written in ink on the back of the objectspirit level, henty brothers portland, warrnambool, henty family -

Programme, Modern Print, Warrnambool Musical and Elocutionary Competitions, 1938
This booklet contains details of the programmes for the Warrnambool Musical and Elocutionary Competitions in 1938, the fifth annual competition of its kind. The competitions were held over five days and attracted a great number of participants with the prizewinners receiving monetary prizes donated by local businesses and businessmen. The competitions included a spelling bee and an operatic aria competition with the latter offering a prize of £10. The adjudicator for the elocution competitions was John Howlett Ross (1857-1953) a Melbourne-born journalist and a noted elocutionist at that time. From 1924 to the early 1950s John Howlett Ross was a well-known A.B.C. radio broadcaster. Today the Warrnambool Eisteddfod conducts similar competitions annually. This program is of interest as an example of the popularity of music and elocution competitions in places such as Warrnambool in the first half of the 20th century. Also the local advertisements in the booklet are of considerable help to researchers today. This is a booklet of 20 pages with a white cover with green and red printing and a black and white photograph on the back cover. The pages contain many advertisements and printed information. Functional object - Bell, hand-held, Early 20th century, c.1900s
The settlement of Cabbage Tree Creek is located on the Princes Highway, 27 km east of Orbost in East Gippsland. The creek, which flows through undulating forest, takes its name from the patches of Cabbage Fan palms growing along its course. A school commenced classes in 1913, but enrolment was small and at times the school operated part time with several other small schools in the area. The school building served as a hall for the district. About 1946 two sawmills commenced operations at Cabbage Tree Creek, and the Forests Commission ranger was stationed in the area. The increased population allowed the school to have more teachers and make improvements. In 1953, a new prefabricated building was erected on a new site. However, by the 1970s employment in the timber industry was unstable and the population decreased. By 1974 the school again had only one teacher and eventually closed in 1993 to amalgamate with the Orbost primary School in Ruskin Street, Orbost. (Ref. VictorianPlaces)The school bell is a signal that tells a school's students when it is time to go to class in the morning and when it is time to change classes during the day as well as when students are dismissed from school. In most schools today it will be a tone, siren, electronic bell sound, a series of chimes, or music played over an intercom but often still called "the school bell". This item reflects the history of Cabbage Tree Creek as well as the technological changes in the school system.Brass bell with incised double lines on bottom edge and top near handle, featuring descriptive notation on front face. gramophone record, Ave Maria / Ora Pro Nobis, 1930's-1940's
Zonophone was a record label founded in 1899 in Camden, New Jersey, by Frank Seaman. The Zonophone name was not that of the company, but was applied to the records and machines sold by Seaman from 1899–1900 to 1903. In the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth, the Gramophone Company continued to use the Zonophone label until 1931. 'Zonophone' indicates the British label rather than Zon - O- Phone, the earlier American label. Madame Deering was Eleanor Jones-Hudson. Eleanor Jones-Hudson (1874-1946) was a Welsh soprano and wife of the flautist Eli Hudson. She recorded extensively for the Gramophone Company, in excerpts from opera, operetta, oratorio, ballads and songs. She was sometimes credited as Alvena Yarrow and as Madame Deering. The phonograph disc record was the primary medium used for music reproduction until late in the 20th century, replacing the phonograph cylinder record—with which it had co-existed from the late 1880's through to the 1920's. Old radios recall a time when society was very different. The 1950s were the heyday of radios in Australia. Families often had more than one in the home. Instrument - Accordion, International Accordion Company, 1930's
This MEZON brand button accordion was made specifically for Lyons, Musical Instrument Importer, 207 Bourke Street Melbourne, as can be seen on the embossed lettering on the top of the accordion. The hand inscribed nameplate indicates that the owner was T H Betts. On August 19th, 1903, Michael Edward Lyons applied to the Trade Mark’s Office of Sydney for registration of “The Invented word “MEZON” to be applied to musical instruments. In 1908 he was advertising himself as sole agents for MEZON accordions. He had been at that address for 15 years (since 1893) and was moving to larger premises at 256 Bourke Street, Melbourne. Still at this address in 1925, Lyons advertises MEZON accordions as “The ideal Xmas present, Maker your friends happy, This Xmas let the Present be a MEZON”. There was a choice of three styles: The Organ, The Wonder and The Grand Organ. They came with a Fibre Case with Lock and Key and a Leather Handle. The promise was “They Give Satisfaction”. They were obtainable at all stores or from Sole Distributors in Australia. In 1927 the MEZON was sold by Albert & Sons in Western Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland as well as by Lyons in Melbourne. The favoured German accordion brands were Monarch and Sterling, which were made by the International Accordion Company in Leipzig, Saxony, Germany. The company was founded in 1871 by Ernest Deines and made a variety of musical instruments. The company closed business in 1834. The International Accordion Company’s accordion range made the International brand and others such as MEZON, Globe, and Dienst. Australia imported the MEZON brand. American companies imported a range of the popular German branded accordions until World War II, when they were no longer available. In general, accordions produced after the war were not as high a quality and not loud enough to be heard over the electronic guitars and the drum kit of the bands. This accordion represents the type of musical instruments used in the late 19h and early 20th century, locally and Australia wide. In colonial Australia musical instruments like this one were imported from Germany as well as other countries. At that time, German made instruments represented good quality. This accordion is significant for being especially imported into Australia by a Melbourne retailer. Music was a part of family and social life, associated with dances, song and general fun.Button accordion with case. Accordion with steel reeds, three bass valves and ten treble valves. It is coloured black with very dark green trim, decorative silver metal reinforcing on main corners, gold reinforcing on corners of the bellows and delicate printed, gold printed patterned trims. Hand support for buttons is made of fabric. Folds of the bellows are light coloured with fine dark pattern. It has a nameplate on the front. Black wooden case has red lining, two brass hinges, two brass hook and eye catches and a swivel brass lock. The base of the case has a loose brass fitting. The top has a thin metal handle. Inscription on hand inscribed name on front, label inside case lid, silver reinforcing, leather on bellows top, and frame of accordion. Manufactured with the brand MEZON in Saxony, Germany, for Lyons of Melbourne. Once the property of T H Betts.Printed on label “MEZON ACCORDEONS.” Impressed in metal corners and reinforcing “MEZON” with logo [circle enclosing entwined capital D and E] “MADE IN SAXONY” Embossed in gold on frame “Made in Saxony”, “MEZON Accordion/ manufactured for LYONS / MELBOURNE, Bourke Street” Name inscribed by hand “T H Betts”flagstaff hill, warrnambool, shipwrecked coast, flagstaff hill maritime museum, maritime museum, shipwreck coast, flagstaff hill maritime village, great ocean road, mezon accordion, lyons, made in saxony, t h betts, betts, mezon, squeeze box, musical instrument, button accordion, germany, michael lyons, international accordion company, ernest deines, circle enclosing d e, d e, e d, german accordion
