Ref: Mr & Mrs J Davies, Greensborough - Alfred Davies took over this store in 1904. He lived with his wife, Lucretia and 5 children above the store. His son Cyril recalled sleeping on the corner balcony on hot nights. Alfred Davies was a strong Temperance man and gave up the store when clients pressured him to collect their beer from the hotel opposite and deliver it with their grocery orders. The pharmacy moved across the road to this corner in 1936 when acquired by Dartnells. The corner shop in Woodheads building was a store and other businesses over the years. The "Druggist" on right, in Hansen's Exchange building, was established in 1889. From 1910 Percy Cathcart conducted the pharmacy there until 1936 when he was joined by Vic Dartnell, his cousin. In 1940, Vic transferred the business to Woodheads corner. His son John followed as a pharmacist until his daughter Amanda became the pharmacist. After the Dartnell family sold the business, the pharmacy continued in a similar manner as a compounding pharmacy and retained 'Dartnell' in its name.This documents the importance given to celebration of the British Empire in the Surrey Hills area in the first half of the 20th century. It also documents the earliest centre of business activity in the area with 2 major sets of dual occupancy residential and retail terraces - the Woodhead buildings and Hansen's Exchange, the later set of terraces having been demolished c1971.Sepia photo of the corner of Canterbury and Union Roads in 1906 or 1909 festooned with flags and lanterns for Empire Day celebrations. Mary was married to William Sneddon who was a postman in Surrey Hills for many years. His father James ran an estate agency in Surrey Hills which had been established by his father, also James, in the 1880s. William married Mary nee Bird in 1903 at his father's home. They lived at 'Cliburn' 14 Suffolk Road, named after Cliburn, Westmorland (later Cumbria) where Mary's mother, Mary Coulston came from. According to the donor, all their homes were given this name. WIlliam and Mary had the following children: Jim (James 3rd) b 1905, Balwyn Jack (John William) b. 1908, Camberwell Norman Alexander b 1910, Camberwell Alan Coulson b 1914, Surrey Hills Jean Isabel b 1916, Surrey Hills Douglas Haig b 1918, Surrey Hills. This image is one of a series of photographs taken by Melbourne based photographers Stevenson and McNicoll who visited Bacchus Marsh and its nearby districts between September and November 1883. William Marshall opened his new premises in Main Street in June 1869. In the following November he opened a wheelwright shop adjacent to his smithy. Mr T. Carlton was the wheelwright. The Marshall Blacksmith building was located next to the ANA Hall in Main Street. It was demolished in 1910 to make way for a new building known as the Chambers Building. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the blacksmith played an essential role in the functioning of the whole community. Before the industrialisation of manufacturing, all metal objects, including farm implements, building requirements and domestic utensils were made by hand. As mechanisation of industry increased, the smith commonly performed the role of farrier in the times when horse power was pivotal to all aspects of society. Complementing this work, the forge was often allied with a wheelwright's shop. These premises also acted as a meeting place for the men of the town, where news was shared and friendships forged. Dr. Gwen Wilson, Emeritus historian, gifted this book at ANZCA's first independent Annual Scientific Meeting held in Launceston in 1994. Dr Wilson presented this gift after her speech about the life of William Russ Pugh and his significant contribution to anaesthesia in Australia. It is unclear as to how the book came into Dr Wilson's possession. Published in London, 1845, for Longman, Brown, Green and Longmans, this book was formally owned by general practitioner Dr William Russ Pugh, being the first medical practitioner in Australia to administer ether anaesthetic on 7 June 1847, in Launceston. The author of the book, P E De Strzelecki acknowledges Pugh for his assistance during his stay in Launceston and for allowing him the use of his laboratory for the analysis of the soils and minerals that were subsequently reported in this book (Page 131). Tan coloured cloth book with an embossed circular motif on the centre of the front and back cover. The same embossed motif is repeated four times along the spine of the book. An embossed design of small, four petal flowers borders the edge of the front and back cover. The title of the book 'Strzelecki's New South Wales and Van Diemen's Land' is printed in gold on the spine. The cloth has come unstuck at various places around the spine and a small section is missing from the base of the spine. The cover is worn and has numerous dark stains possibly from mould. The book contains 19 engraved and lithographed plates. This includes a handcoloured octavo folding, geological map, bound as a frontispiece, depicting the NSW coast down to Gippsland and Tasmania, a fold out single colour geological cross section of the Newcastle Coal Basin, 14 plates illustrating shellfish and flora and three tinted lithographs. Single page maps at the back illustrate wind patterns around Australia. Six pages of handwritten notes regarding the New Chum Drainage Proposals. Extracts from the Bendigo Advertiser mentioning the rising of the water in the New Chum Mines. An Advertiser report 27/12/1910 mentions that deep mining will have to be abandoned owing to the absence of some proper scheme to cope with the water. An arrangement had been made by which the companies affected along the line should contribute to a scheme. Suggestions made that the water be lifted by electric pumps. Baling with tanks had been tried for 6 months and then abandoned. Directors Report Victoria Reef Quartz Jan 1911 mentions unwatering had been carried on with assistance of Government. On the 20th Dec, one rope gave out. Decided that replacing it and doing the necessary work could not be met in the present financial conditions. It was also considered that the costof trying to reach the bottom reefcut in the New Chum Railway could not be continued by baling as its cost proved too expensive, while it could probably be done economically & effectively by electric pump which is now subject to negotiations with the Mining Dept.' Aboriginal soldiers formed a special all volunteer platoon at No 9 Camp Wangaratta in Victoria from late 1940 until February 1941. No 9 Camp was set up at the Wangaratta Showgrounds to allow the formation of the 2/24th Australian Infantry Battalion prior to leaving for Egypt. Major Joseph Albert Wright a WW1 Light Horse veteran was in charge of this platoon the only Aboriginal squad in the Australian Military Forces at that time. The soldiers were all volunteers mainly from Lake Tyers in Victoria. In addition to normal army training they performed guard duty at the Army Hospital and Camp. They formed the Gum Leaf Band and led the troops at community singing and assisted in Methodist Church services. Mrs Margaret Galbraith was born in Beechworth in 1913 on the 5th February. Her parents immigrated to Australia in 1910 from England. Her father was killed after being thrown from a cart in 1912, and her mother eventually purchased the general store in which she worked from the Ladson family. Margaret has some insights into the local area during the Depression from the perspective of a store owner, as well as the presence of 'tramps' in the town, and Chinese immigrants in the community. She speaks a lot about her mother who was a very strong woman. She retired at 80. Margaret married a Ladson in Melbourne and had children. She lived at 47 Finch Street, Beechworth. This oral history recording was part of a project by Jennifer Williams in 2000 to capture the everyday life and struggles in Beechworth during the 20th century. This project involved recording 70 oral history stories on cassette tapes of local Beechworth residents, which were then published in a book called Listen to What they Say: Voices of 20th Century Beechworth. The cassettes were digitised in 2021 with funds made available by the Friends of Bourke.Mrs Margaret Galbraith's account of her life in Beechworth and the local area during the 20th century is historically and socially significant to the cultural heritage of the region. She details important historical events and hardships in the region's history that had a lasting local, regional and national impact, including Australia during war time, the Great Depression, immmigration, economic struggles, and women's societal roles in a rural area. This oral history account is socially and historically significant as it is a part of a broader collection of interviews conducted by Jennifer Williams which were published in the book 'Listen to what they say: voices of twentieth-century Beechworth.' While the township of Beechworth is known for its history as a gold rush town, these accounts provide a unique insight into the day-to-day life of the town's residents during the 20th century, many of which will have now been lost if they had not been preserved.This is a digital copy of a recording that was originally captured on a cassette tape. This scrapbook contains newspaper cuttings, hand written poems and quotes from friends and family members and pressed flowers and ferns. Entries were made in the mid 1800s to early 1900s and relate to Duncan family history. The initials suggest this is Lillie and Olive's father, David Hood Duncan, who created this scrapbook. David Hood Duncan married Ada Blanche Thomson (1861-1928) on 25 November 1896. Ada was the daughter of John Gilmour Thomson (1829-1905) from Moonee Ponds and Hannah Davies (1834-1890) Their first daughter, Lillie, was born on 15 October 1897 in Woodland, South Gippsland where he was a farmer. In 1908, 1910, 1911, 1913, Lillie Duncan sent letters to Patience from the Young Folk section of the Australian. She was writing from Woodlea, Cathkin, where they had moved as there was no school in South Gippsland. They moved to 11 Paxton Street, East Malvern when David retired. He was leasing a farm, Kia Ora, in Koo Wee Rup, the South Gippsland. Ada Blanche died on 28 December 1928. David died on 24 May 1942.This is an album of social and historic significance, being part of a sub-collection of material that provides a snapshot of the type of individuals and families involved in the Ladies Harbour Lights Guild and the activities carried out by that organisation.Decoratively embossed word on front cover : "ALBUM" . Possibly George Bird (1845-1920) prior to his marriage to Janet Kilpatrick in 1878. However the contextual placement of this photo in the album opposite who is believed to be a young Phillip Shillinglaw in 1865 does not seem to fit though the person does not look like a Shillinglaw male and may well be a family member by marriage. Stewart & Co operated from 217 Bourke St., East from 1871 to 1876 and from 217-219 from 1877 to 1889. Other locations included 42, 284 and 286. Overall, they operated in Melbourne from 1871 through at least 1910 though Carte-de-Visite photos were superseded by 1890. After much debate and discussion among politicians and educationalists, the 1910 Education Act No 2301 was passed, making possible the establishment of new technical schools to address the dearth of skilled trades people. In July 1912 Collingwood Technical School opened in the modified bluestone buildings at 35 Johnston St, originally built in 1853 as the Collingwood Town Hall and Court House. Within three weeks, there were 57 boys enrolled - studying preliminary carpentry and pattern-making, plumbing, engineering, sheet iron work and bricklaying. They attended two hours a night on three evenings a week. In 1913, the school opened its doors to juniors and took residence in new permanent buildings erected on the site. It was classified as a trades school by the State Education Department. Two years later courses in electrical wiring and electrical and mechanical engineering were introduced. In 1988 Preston College of TAFE and Collingwood College of TAFE merged to become Northern Metropolitan Institute of TAFE (NMIT). Metal money boxes shaped like common familiar objects became popular in the 18th century. In the 20th century, they were used to promote and advertise events and businesses. In the 1950s metal money boxes shaped like a bank building were given away to children by their parents' bank to encourage them to save money. This metal money box was produced for the company of OXO Ltd of London. It was made specifically as a souvenir of the Coronation of King George VI of England, which happened on May 12, 1937. OXO Ltd. still makes OXO stock cubes, which contain a concentrated meat extract. The cubes are used to flavour soups, gravy, casseroles and other food recipes to enhance their flavour. The cubes are removed from their foil wrapper then crumbled into the dish and mixed with the ingredients. Chemist Justus von Liebig worked with engineer George Gilbert of Uruguay to produce Liebig’s Extract of Meat, the forerunner of OXO . In the late 1890s, OXO produced a liquid form of the meat extract and in 1899 registered the OXO trademark worldwide, and in 1900 in the UK. In 1910 the OXO 'penny' cube was in production and proved very popular. The money box is significant for its connection to British Monarch, King George IV, who reigned from 1932-1952. It is also significant for its connection to the OXO cube, a very well knon brand of food additive from the mid-19th century to current times.Souvenir money box, oval cylinder with domed, pull-off lid and framed coin slot, with seams on each side. It once contained six OXO Cubes. The red tin with gold tin has the Royal Insignia of King George VI and Elizabeth on one side and the Royal medallion-style portrait of King George VI and Elizabeth on the other side. There is an inscription on the base and floral decorations on the sides. The enrolment was 36 pupils with Mr Frederick Meeres as Teacher. 1863 the school is called Beaumaris Common School No 84 with 70 pupils and Walter Meeres as Teacher. 1869 another 2 acres in Charman Road were granted by the Education Board and brick building built . 1872 State School 84 Beaumaris was increasing enrollments and 1878 a new brick school was built to accommodate 174 pupils and the name changed to Cheltenham State School No.84 1894 Mentone State School No.2950 amalgamated with Cheltenham SS No.84. 1910 the buildings were in disrepair, overcrowding was increasing and renovations were made 1912 with further additions in 1925 and 1937. Post WW11 extra prefabricated Classrooms were added as enrollment increased to 1038 in 1955.. Cheltenham East State School 4754 was opened as housing development spread over the City of Moorabbin .
