Postcard
Taken on an unknown date, depicted is a portrait of a young, unidentified male soldier. He is dressed in an Australian military uniform. It is believed that this soldier was part of The Australian Imperial Force during World War I. This can be inferred by the chevron rank insignia visible on the uniform. The placement of this insignia on the sleeve of the right arm suggests that this soldier was either a Warrant Officer or a Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO). Specifically, the number of chevron stripes - here, there are three - are believed to signify a Sergeant ranking. The man in this photograph is also wearing a 'Rising Sun' collar badge on his coat. Australia, unlike most other Commonwealth countries, did not adopt metal regimental badges during the First World War. All units were issued with the Australian Army General Service Badge, better known as the 'Rising Sun’ badge. This insignia is almost always identified with the Australian Imperial Force. The record is historically significant due to its connection to World War I. This conflict is integral to Australian culture as it was the single greatest loss of life and the greatest repatriation of casualties in the country's history. Australia’s involvement in the First World War began when the Australian government established the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) in August 1914. Immediately, men were recruited to serve the British Empire in the Middle East and on the Western Front. The first significant Australian action of the war was the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force’s (ANMEF) landing on Rabaul on 11 September 1914. The ANMEF took possession of German New Guinea at Toma on 17 September 1914 and of the neighbouring islands of the Bismarck Archipelago in October 1914. On 25 April 1915, members of the AIF landed on Gallipoli in Turkey with troops from New Zealand, Britain, and France. This specific event holds very strong significance within Australian history. The record has strong research potential. This is due to the ongoing public and scholarly interest in war, history, and especially the ANZAC legend, which is commemorated annually on 25 April, known as ANZAC Day.Sepia rectangular postcard printed on card.Reverse: CARD / JAS.C.CRADDEN, / 182 PITT ST, SYDNEY. / Cecil Johnson / BMM2640.1 /military album, wwi, world war i, postcard, australian army, australian imperial force, aif, sergeant, warrant officer, non-commissioned officer, portrait -

Document - Mary J Irwin Letters of Administration 1874
This document shows that Mary Irwin of Peterborough, Victoria, died in April 1892 without making a will and the Letters of Administration were granted to her husband, William Irwin. However he died in 1901 without having fully administered Mary Irwin’s estate. In turn the estate administration was passed over to Charles McGillivray of Peterborough and one of Mary Irwin’s sons, William Irwin, residing in New Zealand. This document was drawn up in 1907, fifteen years after Mary Irwin’s death. She left property to the value of £100. No other details on Mary Irwin are available. Tait collection: item 11 of 62This document is of interest because it was drawn up by a local Warrnambool solicitor, Ernest Chamber. He had a practice in Kepler Street, Warrnambool with the known dates, 1897 to 1910, with other offices in Koroit and Port Fairy during the same time. His manager in Warrnambool was Thomas Goodall who appears to have passed this document on to lawyers continuing on in the Kepler Street premises until it was found in the building once used by the legal business of Mackay Taylor. This is a piece of parchment paper folded in two and written on the back and front in brown-coloured ink (perhaps originally black). There is a seal of the Supreme Court of the Colony of Victoria attached with a green ribbon and three red stamps of the Master in Equity in the Supreme Court. Apart from some yellow staining the document is in good condition.‘In the Supreme Court of Victoria in the Probate Jurisdiction in the unadministered Estate of Mary Jane Irwin, late of Peterborough in the County of Heytesbury in the State of Victoria, married woman, deceased intestate, Letters of Administration, de bonis non. Uniform - Salvation Army Bonnet, 1960s
The Salvation Army was founded in England in 1865 and bonnets were introduced in the 1880s for women officers. These bonnets were worn until the 1960s. The Salvation Army came to Warrnambool in 1887 and was initially based in Raglan Parade before opening a citadel in Lava Street in 1905. In the mid 1960s they purchased the old Congregational Church and Manse at the corner of Lava and Henna Streets. This bonnet is a fine example of the bonnets worn by Salvation Army Officers as part of their uniform. The bonnet is made of black raffia with a brim. It has black and maroon grosgrain ribbbons around the front, sides and back. The maroon ribbon has THE SALVATION ARMY machine printed in gold letters. A grosgrain black strap is attached to the head band to enable the bonnet to be worn securely. The bonnet is lined with black cotton. Badge, Salvation Army, Early 20th century
This badge is believed to be part of a uniform of an officer of the Salvation Army. It could be either a collar or a hat badge. The Salvation Army, a Christian organization, came to Warrnambool in 1887 with the arrival of Captain and Mrs John Moyle and Lieutenant William Sanderson. Their first place of worship was a Raglan Parade grain store. Today the Warrnambool Salvation Army citadel and associated buildings are in Koroit Street. This badge is of interest as an early example of the badges worn by Salvation Army personnel in Warrnambool. This is a metal badge,( possibly silver), in the shape of a shield with an inner circle with a red background and images of a cross, the letter ‘S’ and two crossed swords. This inner circle is surrounded by a circular blue rim with gold lettering and outside this circle is a jagged rim with sixteen points. On top of the centre circles is a crown with some red colouring. The metal clip at the back of the badge is missing. The badge is somewhat tarnished. The back of the badge has three hallmarks.
