Written in February 1966, this is a letter from the editor or a journalist to a child who had brought a weak young Little Penguin into the office of the Express newspaper in Wonthaggi. February is the time that adult penguins have what is known as a “catastrophic moult" when they lose all of their feathers within a week or 2 and cannot go to the sea to fish. Any chicks left in the burrow will not be fed and need to go to sea themselves to feed. Some are just not strong enough or have mature feathers to do this and perish. Bert West was a Phillip Island resident and manager at the Penguin Parade, who was very knowledgeable about Little Penguins and was able to explain this to the journalist who then wrote the letter. Presumably the photograph had been in a previous edition so this item in the form of a letter to Simon would be a follow up to the original article. This cutting is significant because it indicates that this Little Penguin had been fishing in the Cape Paterson area, and possibly was not able to find sufficient food there. It also indicates that there was apparently no process in place for dealing with weak birds found by the public. Neither the child nor the photographer knew any better than to allow the child to interfere with or hold a sick Penguin as shown in the photo. That is definitely no longer recommended, as we now know that handling a sick bird in that way is very stressful to them and can contribute to poor outcomes for them. Minutes of the meeting held on 3rd February 1975. Having ascertained that there was no State Government subsidy available for children's homes they reported that the proposed development of Blamey House was not viable and suggested two alternatives: moving children over 16 years of age into auxiliary accommodation, and selling Harelands and Blamey House whilst using Stanhope for co-ed accommodation. Further investigations were to be made into modifying Stanhope and to obtain occupancy figures for children under 16 years. (See Cat. No. 01692). Minutes of the meeting held on 28th February 1975 which updated the information in Cat. No. 01693. Red Cross, which owned Stanhope and leased it to Melbourne Legacy, had been approached to consider Legacy's request to modify the residence. The numbers of children 16 years and under had averaged 35-40 with 26 currently in residence. The Committee now proposed that Harelands should be sold and Stanhope should become co-ed and modified to accommodate 40 children. Chairman Legatee Quayle undertook to ring other Committee members for their approval to pass these recommendations to the Junior Legacy Club. The department of Veterans Affairs organised for an Australian contingent to attend the 75th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings in April 1990. Legacy was asked to nominate 8 junior legatees to be included. This memo accompanied a copy of the report about the trip to the listed Legacy clubs. The report (item 02335) outlines the itinerary and contains the written accounts of the trip from the 8 junior legatees. Most likely an F-Class 2-4-0 Steam Locomotive pushing carriage about to cross the Eltham Railway Trestle Bridge heading towards Greensborough, viewed from what was later Eltham Common and site of the re-located Shillinglaw Cottage (1964) and Eltham Library (1994). On the far side of the track on what is present day Central Park oval is a crop field. The railway was commenced in 1900 and passed through the middle of the Shillinglaw Farm. Here it passes through the farm paddocks. The train station at Eltham opened in 1902.
