Kew achieved independence from the Boroondara Roads Board in 1860. As a new municipality, its first three leaders were designated as chairmen. On becoming a borough in 1863, its leaders were identified as mayors. The earliest photographs date from ca.1906, when the Town of Kew commissioned the noted local photographer Josiah E Barnes to produce standardised portraits of former mayors to be displayed in the Mayoral Chamber of the Town Hall. The collection also includes photographs by other well-known photographic studios such as Burlington Studios, Melba – Melbourne, Stuart Tompkins, Spencer Shier and Talma & Co. The majority of mounts identify the photographer. Eighty photographs are housed in their original frames.This portrait is one of a series of mounted and framed photographic portraits of Mayors and Town Clerks of the former Borough, Town and City of Kew, for the period 1863 to 1969. The portraits were transferred by the City of Kew to the Kew Historical Society in March 1989. A Significance Assessment in 2018, funded by the National Library of Australia confirmed the historic, and often artistic significance of the series. Framed portrait of Cr. F.S. Before Charles Mortomore enlisted he was a farmer and lived in Lilydale and later St Kilda. He enlisted on March 1, 1916. He embarked from Melbourne on June 3, 1916 on HMAT Persic (A34) to Plymouth and served with the 37th Infantry Battalion in France where he won the MM (Military Medal). On December 25-26, 1916 at Armentieres, while acting as a scout, he displayed great daring in getting through the enemy wire and obtaining information in preparation for a raid on the enemy trenches. When the scout next to him was wounded, he carried him back across NO Mans Land to his own line, and then returned to his work. He was wounded on February 27,1917 and later died from these wounds. Jack's mother Ida Elizabeth AMBROSE nee PAYNE is the elder sister of Alice Emily Maud DUNLOP nee PAYNE mother of Sir Ernest Edward "Weary" DUNLOP, twin sisters Lily May and Violet Minnie PAYNE who both served as Nurses during the First World War along with youngest brother Alfred Ernest PAYNE 1256. The latter three together with Jack AMBROSE are listed on the Wangaratta and District Victory Roll. These medals were awarded to Robert Andrew Hose, enlistment number 114 was born in Warrnambool in 1892 (parents George and Janet Hose). Prior to enlistment in World War One in 1914 Sergeant Robert Hose served with the permanent armed forces at Maribyrnong, Melbourne. He saw war service in Egypt, Gallipoli and the Western Front. In May 1917 he was awarded the Military Medal for his courage and resourcefulness and being a fine example to his men in an incident near Beaumetz les Cambrai in France. He died of his wounds a few days later. He is buried in France. These World War One medals are of high significance, particularly the Military Medal awarded for bravery to Robert Andrew Hose, a soldier born in Warrnambool. The Military Medal is a treasured item in our collection because of its rarity and association with a local World War One hero. .1 A bronze medal with a laurel wreath and printing on one side and the figure of Winged Victory on the other side.
