The Melbourne cable tramway system operated between 1885 and 1940.Former Melbourne cable tram bell used for fortnightly and annual meetings of Ringwood Apex Club, mounted on timber base with metal shields showing presidents for each year from 1966 to 2003. Ringwood Apex Club closed in 2003-04.This dinner gong, formerly a Melbourne cable tram bell, was donated by inaugural secretary Wal Hodgson 21.10.67. This photograph is part of the Caulfield Historical Album 1972. This album was created in approximately 1972 as part of a project by the Caulfield Historical Society to assist in identifying buildings worthy of preservation. The album is related to a Survey the Caulfield Historical Society developed in collaboration with the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) and Caulfield City Council to identify historic buildings within the City of Caulfield that warranted the protection of a National Trust Classification. Principal photographer thought to be Trevor Hart, member of Caulfield Historical Society. Most photographs were taken between 1966-1972 with a small number of photographs being older and from unknown sources. All photographs are black and white except where stated, with 386 photographs over 198 pages. Glen Eira Heritage Management Plan 1996 by Andrew Ward The 1857 rate book indicates that the major portion of the District was under pasture, although a considerable portion was cultivated. There were 159 houses, huts and tents whose occupants were mainly occupied on the land. If "Camden Town" was the principal commercial focus for the District in 1857, it was to remain so in later years, incorporated today in the Glenhuntly Road centre which extends more or less continuously from Elsternwick to Bambra Road. The Caulfield State School of 1877, the horse tramway of 1889 and subsequently the electric trams were all events confirming the importance of Glenhuntly Road and the fledgling community of "Camden Town" wherein the City's commercial centre has its origins. It is recalled, today, by their presence, and also by the "London Tavern" in Hawthorn Road, established by John Guess in 1873. Dr Geulah Solomon's 4 volume book "Caulfield's Heritage" Vol 1 p 93: "A modern hotel presently on the site continues the name of the London Tavern." Demonstrates ticketing systems in Ballarat and in particular the use of a tourist ticket to enable people to travel around the whole of Ballarat on the trams. Yields information about the ticketting system and how surplus stocks were overprinted for future use. Craig Tooke, formally of Yarra Trams substations advised 12/8/2020 by email to Warren Doubleday. "An interesting photo. I don’t know who the person in the photo is. More than likely the bulb in from an industrial installation such as mine etc. and not tram or train. The reason is that only Melbourne trams has Hackbridge Hewittic rectifiers that were used for traction. There was three sets of bulbs installed at West Brunswick, Deepdene and Preston. West Brunswick is definitely still in existence and probably Deepdene is still in existence as the old substation was abandoned intact and just left intact. Preston of course has gone and was removed as part of the work done at PWS. Another clue is the number 500/6 which means it was from a 500 kW – 6 bulb unit. The traction units were all in multiples of 150 kW per bulb i.e. the tramway ones were 600 kW rated. The number "40246" is the bulb serial number. Each bulb manufactured had an individual serial number. Interesting the bulbs at Brisbane Tram Museum have the following serial numbers to the ones that were at Essendon tram sub. Our collection includes a number of documents on the history of the line including a film Heritage on the Line produced in 1992 and Down the line to Upfield by Jon Saul and Wendy Moore. 3rd edition 1994 and Northern Suburbs Transport Plan prepared by the Upgrade Upfield Coordinating Committee 1994. / The Upfield Line Heritage Study by Andrew Ward (1990) can be found on the Merri-bek Council website. / The Lonie Report prepared by the State Government in 1988 recommended conversion of all or part of the line to light rail. Some proposals involved replacing the Sydney Road trams with light rail, freeing up the rail reservation for a freeway, while others proposed installing the light rail on the rail reservation from Upfield to Park Street, where the line would divert to join the Royal Parade tram line. / Our collection includes documents on the community campaign to save the line from the Cain Government in 1989-90 and the Kennett Government in 1992-93. The Save the Upfield Line Campaign was set up and composed of local residents. We have a collection of their minutes and campaign materials. Brunswick Council was also actively involved in campaigning to save the line and set a Council and community committee to work on this. We also have minutes of its meetings and some Council reports on the issue. / In 1995 the State Government finally agreed to retain and upgrade the line. Added to VC EJ July 2025

ESCo Employee Hours Work Record book that has been used by an ESCo/SEC inspector, H. P. James as a record / note book for his personal collection or papers or journal titled "In Other Days". Book sewn with string in 36 page sections, blank end papers, board covers with stipple paper out sides and Rexene cloth binding. Comprising plain paper end papers and 104 printed pages (52 leaves), with each sheet printed in black on feint ruled paper for recording the hours worked and other details of drivers and conductors employed by ESCo. Printed for daily use, with Day and date page headings - made out for the 1930's. Text generically printed feint ruled paper. Images: Book - i1 Inside front cover - i2 Members Certificate - i3 Photo of H.P. James and index page - i4 Has been used to gather mementos such as photos, articles, newspaper clippings, letters and other miscellaneous documents on Ballarat local history. Newspaper cuttings etc often have side notes written by Mr. James. Inside front cover has certificate recording Mr. James membership to the Ballarat Historical Society (on Australasian Historical Record Society paper) for 1937 - 1938.
