The State Governor Sir Rohan Delacombe and Lady Delacombe visited the Shire of Eltham where they were entertained to a civic luncheon by the Shire President Cr. L. E. Clarke and councilors at the Panton Hill hotel and made a tour of the shire. Among which was the Eltham elderly citizens' club where he met L-R: Mrs Lander, Mrs Stevenson, Mrs Armstrong, Mrs Norman, Mrs - , and Mrs Crockett. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' This file contains two items pertaining to Emmaus Rest Home: 1/A series of emails exchanged between local resident Mark Upton and John O’Callaghan of the Glen Eira Historical Society, dated 30/01/2008 and 31/01/2008, regarding the history of a derelict property situated at 41 Murrumbeena Road. In the first email, Upton refers to the property of ‘Oakdene’ Aged Care Facility and inquires as to whether the Society possesses any information on it. The next day, O’Callaghan replies that he will investigate. Later that day, Upton recommends O’Callaghan some information on the property he unearthed via Joanne (Jo) Antoni, Executive Assistant at Churches of Christ Community Care. The property turns out to have originally been a private residence owned by the Birtchnell family, sold on 24/01/1945, eventually acquired by the Church and converted into an aged care facility which closed on 16/07/1999 2/Three black-and-white photographs. Two of the photographs portray a resident of the Home, Mrs. Armstrong, and a staff member of the Home, Sr. Johnston, in a bathroom operating a shower. These photographs contain writing on the back identifying the persons. The remaining one portrays Mrs. Armstrong and another, unidentified resident of the Home seated in a bedroom. This one also contains writing on the back, but specifying the name only of the facility. This book was awarded to Lucie Mary Marshall in 1890 as first prize in Botany. Lucie enrolled at Clarendon Ladies' College in 1882 at the age of 8. In the original register father's name is listed as Samuel, and under parent/guardian address is listed: Mrs Williams 5 Dana St Mrs Wright Armstrong St L. Edwards Mair St. It also notes that Lucie married and became Mrs. Walt Davies residing in Warrnambool. Presbyterian educators placed great value on a classical education matched with diligence in study. Book prizes were highly regarded and academic success admired. In the school’s early years prizes were ordered direct from London and had the school crest embossed in gold on the front or back cover. Many of the prizes given in early years were returned to the school to equip the Weatherly Library when it opened in 1936.Bound in red cloth with gilt and black illustrations on front cover and spine. Alfred Armstrong Armstrong, Alfred, Eltham is a native of Somerset, England, born in 1825, and was employed under Mr. Mark Isambard Kingdom Brunel as a civil engineer prior to his coming out to Melbourne in 1852. He first visited Beechworth, but returning to Melbourne took contacts at Essendon and Gisbourne for forming and metalling the road. He afterwards purchased property at Eltham, where is at present mining, surveyor, inspector of mines, and mining registrar for the St Andrew’s division of the Castlemaine mining district. Mrs Armstrong, to whom he was married in 1854, at St Paul’s Church, Melbourne, died on 27th March, 1887. from "Victoria and its Metropolis: Past and Present" written in 1888 by Alexander Sutherland. This label comes from the newsagency and stationery shop of James Deany. He took over the business of O.Gorman in Timor Street in 1901 and was in partnership with Robert Armstrong until 1906. His business was purchased in 1918 by Mrs Matilda Rowan. Deany was a Warrnambool Councillor (1911-1917), Mayor 1915-1916 and M.L.A. Appendix to Shire Secretary’s Report, 28 November 1966 SHIRE PRESIDENTS Local Government in this part of the State could be said to have commenced with election in 1846 of three trustees for "The Parish Road, leading from the Suburban Allotments in the Parish of Jika Jika, near Melbourne, to the Village Reserve in the Parish of Nillumbik". The Upper Heidelberg and Old Eltham Road follow approximately the original line of road proclaimed in 1840. The Eltham Road District was proclaimed on 24.9.1856. A meeting of landowners and householders of the Eltham Road District was held on 14.10.1856 at the Fountain of Friendship Hotel, Little Eltham, for the purpose of forming a District Road Board. To date I have been unable to locate any record of the names of the members elected, or of the first Chairman. Further research may yield the desired information. The Shire of Eltham was constituted on 28.3.1871. The proposed Roll of Shire Presidents should, I believe, also include the Road Board Chairmen. It may also be considered fitting to recognise the Heidelberg or Nillumbik (or Warringal) Road Trust in the same way. The first Minute Book of the Board, covering the period 1856 to 1863, has apparently been missing for many years. The Shire Minute Book for the period 1878 to 1885 is also missing. The absence of these vital records makes difficult the compilation of a complete and accurate list of Chairmen and Presidents. Although an early letter book yielded the names of the Shire Presidents in 1878, 1879 and 1800. The names prior to 1863 were derived from Rate Books and Government Gazettes. Alexander Wright was born on 25 August, 1898 in Smeaton He was the brother of musician Frank Wright. Alex Wright was killed whilst performing at the Birmingham Empire as the result of a German air Attack in October 1940. The theatre had a direct hit. According to Frank Wright Alex was a great impersonator with a unique range Bass - tenor with many accents (not unlike Peter Dawson) "AUSTRALIAN CARUSO Smeaton Boy's Fame Andre Navarre, who left Australia about three years ago to study opera in Europe, bids fair to take a place among the world's great tenors. A few months ago Navarre sang for Melba for the first time, and she immediately acclaimed him to be a finished artist, describing his voice as the nearest approach to the immortal Caruso she had ever heard, writes the Ballarat "Courier." Andre Navarre is, however, only a stage name adopted by Alexander Wright, a son of Mr. and Mrs. William. Wright, of Armstrong street North, Ballarat, and brother of Mr. Frank Wright and Mrs. William Ritchie, of that city. Born at smeaton 31 years ago, in what may be termed a musical atmosphere; Alex. Wright showed a definite desire to sing at a very early age, and in his boyhood figured as soloist at school concerts, etc. His youth was spent around Smeaton, working at home and at various farms in the district until he was about 19 years of age, when he secured a position at the Dunlop rubber works, Melbourne. Up to this period Wright had no vocal training whatever, but being the possessor of a good resonant baritone voice, was persuaded by some of his friends to "have a go at the stage.'' Securing a position in the chorus of "Maid of the Mountains," which was at that time showing at the Theatre Royal, he soon made his voice heard to advantage, and also commenced to take lessons from Signor Robottaro. It was about this time that Wright was invited by a fellow musician to a musical evening at which a member of Rigo's grand opera company, then performing at " The Playhouse," was also present. Hearing Wright sing, the musician immediately said : ' You're a fool to waste your time in a chorus with that voice. Rigo is looking for a singer like you for the role of 'Figaro' in 'Barber of Seville'." Alex, however, did not take the remark seriously, and it was only after the numerous persuasions of friends who obviously knew the real value of his voice that the modest young man was eventually induced to meet Rigo. The Italian maestro was so delighted with the voice that without hesitation he was given the principle role of "The Barber" to study. Many singers having previously been tried and rejected for the part, Wright was astonished at his success in being chosen, and awakened suddenly to the fact by the maestro that a world voice, if properly trained, would surely develop in the young artist, Alex at once settled down to study, and all day long in his boarding house at St. Kilda could be heard rehearsing his new role. In less than a month he had completely mastered the part, and on the opening night, in the exacting role of "The Barber," he was an outstanding success. Later, he toured Australia with many leading artists, including Elsa Stralia and Harry Lauder, and spent his last two years in Sydney, where he was engaged as soloist in the biggest picture house. Realising that a training in Italy and on the Continent was essential for a successful operatic singer, the young artist decided to go overseas to continue his studies. He did not leave Australia, however, before he gratuitously gave a concert in his little home town to the obvious delight of all his old friends, who flocked from all parts of the district to hear him. The hall was packed to overflowing , and so pleased was Alex with the tumultuous reception he received that he sang fewer than 20 songs. Once in Italy, he lost no time in placing himself under the tuition of Cottone, and it was at the studio of this maestro that he met Toti dal Monte, a former protege of the same master. Two years were spent in Italy, when "Navarre" learned to speak the Italian language fluently, and acquired a wide knowledge of the operas. He sang in Milan about a year ago, and was paid some glowing tributes by the Italian Press critics, who likened his voice to that of Caruso. From Italy he went to Paris, where he met John Brownlee and many other famous singers. The critics on the Continent are unanimous that Andre Navarre-the unassuming Smeaton boy, whom his schoolmates still affectionately call "Hock"--is destined to become one of the luminaries in music history. It is interesting to recall some facts concerning the remarkable family from which this artist springs. Four other members have won championship honors in the musical world. Mr. Frank Wright has the Australasian cornet championship to his credit ; Mr. Norman Wright, of Sydney, has won a tenor championship of New Zealand, and has recorded for the Columbia Gramophone Company ; Mrs. Wm. Ritchie ( formerly Miss Laura Wright) won the A.N.A. contralto championship in Melbourne; whilst the oldest member, Lydia (Mrs. C. Cane, now in N.Z.) won the violin championship at South Street when 17 years of age. Last year Mrs. and Mr. Wright celebrated their golden wedding. Both of the old folk are intensely musical, and it has been said that the voice of the mother, although entirely untrained, showed in her earlier days glimpses of the beautiful quality which made Melba famous. Andre Navarre does not propose leaving the Continent for some time. Recently he was offered a 12 months' contract to sing in London for £2500 but on the advice of Melba and his coach, it was refused on the grounds that yet another 12 months' French study was necessary to ensure absolute perfection. That "Alex " has lost none of his school-boy wit is evinced by his own jocular remark that he has "a top C sharp that will crack every window in the Sydney Town Hall!"
