Williams – Technology Award Recipient... – Technology Award Recipient MAJ Bob Williams – Technical Award ...In 1990 MAJ Bob Williams was the OC of Technical Development Cell. He won first prize for his entry ‘Innovations in Cartographic Communication’ in the individual category at the 2nd Australian Institute of Cartographers and BHP Engineering Technology Research and Development Awards. The award was announced at the 1990 Australian Cartographic Conference in Darwin where MAJ Williams presented his entry. At the time he had completed PhD studies at the Australian Defence Academy and was the first Survey Corps officer to complete studies at this advanced level. Also, in 1990 the Royal Australian Survey Corps’ meritorious achievements were formally recognised by the Senate of the Australian Parliament in a Notice of Motion on 31st of May 1990. The Royal Australian Survey Corps also featured in the issue of a commemorative stamped envelope issued by Australia Post. These achievements are covered in more detail in page 147 of Valerie Lovejoy’s book 'Mapmakers of Fortuna – A history of the Army Survey Regiment’ ISBN: 0-646-42120-4. ... award recipient... driver of the year david gawthorn spokesperson award recipient ...Winner of the 1989 Taxi Driver of the Year award, David Gawthorn, is pictured holding up his award (an engraved silver platter) as he leans out of his taxi car window. Engraved on the platter is "Winner VICTORIAN TAXI DRIVER OF THE YEAR - 1989". David Gawthorn was a spokesperson for the Arthritis Foundation of Victoria. As a taxi driver, he was aware that many people with arthritis rely on taxis due to problems with mobility. He felt that it was important to show them courtesy and consideration as it would make life easier for them. Mr Gawthorn was presented with the award at a Gala Dinner held at the Hilton Hotel in July 1989. The award was a joint initiative between the Arthritis Foundation of Victoria, the Victorian Taxi Association, and the Roads Corporation. It was also sponsored by 3MP radio station and the Hilton on the Park. In 1963-4 he purchased a block of land and built a house at 44 Sackville Street, Kew. A company director, he was elected to Council in August 1973. His first term as Mayor began in August 1976. When Cr Wallinga was re-elected Mayor in 1980-1, he was also the newly elected President of Kew Lions Club. During his two mayoral terms, Cr Wallinga attended many functions representing the City of Kew, opening events, presenting awards and leading the Council in decision-making. When he retired from Council in 1982, he continued to live in Sackville Street until January 1992, when he moved to Mitcham.
