The Murrumbeena Branch of the Alfred Hospital Auxiliary held a grand charity gymkhana on 7 September, 1929 at the Central Speedway, Boundary Road, Bentleigh. It was a full racing program with several trotting events. There were also games and several well-stocked stalls. Mary Selina Inglefinger was born in 1856 in Kings Plain, NSW and was the eldest daughter of Joseph Inglefinger and his wife Maria Viktoria Bertel (Barthl), both of whom were born in Germany; they applied to come to Australia in 1854. They had 10 children, the first 8 born in Kings Plain. In 1879, Joseph Inglefinger bought James Staig's farm in Boundary (Warrigal) Road, near the corner of Bona Vista Avenue, Surrey Hills. The 1903 and 1905 electoral rolls list them in Boundary Road. In 1875 Mary married Charles Simpson, stepson of James Staig in Scots Church, Melbourne. They had 3 boys and 3 girls. Photograph of a 1926 Hudson Super 6 parked at the tea room/kiosk on the intersection of Riversdale Road and Warragul Road. Distinguishing features of the car include the triangular badge on the radiator and the unusual disc wheels. The 1926 Hudson also had horizontal radiator shutters. On this vehicle, a finer mesh has been attached in front of the shutters. This is normal practice when insects such as locusts are in plague. At the time, Warragul Road was known as East Boundary Road. Behind the car on the tramway pole is a colour light tramway signal for the single-line section between Warragul Road and the terminus. On 1 July 1928, the Wattle Park line was extended from Boundary Road via Riversdale Road to Elgar Road. It was built as a single track with a passing loop about halfway along, plus a passing loop at the former Boundary Road terminus. The tramway pole has a stop sign and a telephone box as well. In a box of negatives received is an envelope noting the car was owned by Ray Pearson and photo taken during the 1930s. Inside the motor car are two people, the driver, and a lady. In the background is part of the tea rooms located at this corner with a Shell gravity-fed petrol bowser. By the time tobacco advertising was banned on Australian radio and television in 1976, Wills' market share had fallen a further 6%. In 1989 W.D & H.O.Wills (Australia) became a subsidiary of the British American Tobacco Industries group of companies. 1999 British American Tobacco merged with global competitor Rothmans International. Rothmans in Australia and Wills merged to form the wholly-owned subsidiary British American Tobacco Australia. The merger left British American Tobacco Australia, Phillip Morris and Imperial Tobacco Australia Virginia Tobacco, or Flue-cured tobacco, is named after the US state where it was first cultivated. It is also called ‘bright tobacco’ because of the yellow to orange colour it achieves during curing. It grows particularly well in subtropical regions with light rainfall, such as Georgia, Florida and the Carolinas in the USA, Southern Brazil and Zimbabwe. Soil collected for the 2006 Staff reunion of Geelong East Technical School/James Harrison College. The College merged with Newcomb Secondary College in 2001. The old site became part of The Gordon TAFE.
