This photograph is part of the Caulfield Historical Album 1972. This album was created in approximately 1972 as part of a project by the Caulfield Historical Society to assist in identifying buildings worthy of preservation. The album is related to a Survey the Caulfield Historical Society developed in collaboration with the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) and Caulfield City Council to identify historic buildings within the City of Caulfield that warranted the protection of a National Trust Classification. Principal photographer thought to be Trevor Hart, member of Caulfield Historical Society. Most photographs were taken between 1966-1972 with a small number of photographs being older and from unknown sources. All photographs are black and white except where stated, with 386 photographs over 198 pages. Property now known as Eversley, formerly Nulmore then Brampton. From Caulfield Heritage Management Plan 1996 by Andrew Ward In 1888, C. Hume owned lots 61, 62 and 63 in the Kooyong Park Estate, on the northwest corner of Gladstone Parade and Clarence Street. In 1889 Thomas B. Jackson, architect, of Shoobra Road, purchased the land and in the same year built a ten roomed brick house on lot 63 and part lot 62. Jackson leased the property to William Dalrymple in 1890. By 1894, the property was owned by P. Langwill and leased to James Ainslie, an accountant. By 1899, Frederick Henriques had moved into the house, which was known as ''Nulmore". In 1910, the house was vacant. In 1920, it was leased to Augustine Barbeta who continued to live there in 1930. By 1934, the house was renamed ''Brampton". ''Nulmore" is locally important as an unusually imposing Elizabethan influenced villa in Caulfield, comparing with nos. 34 and 25 Gladstone Parade. Its link with local architect Thomas B Jackson is of interest. From Caulfield Heritage Management Plan 1996 by Andrew Ward In 1889, Thomas B Jackson, an architect in Shoobra Road, owned lots 61-63 at the north west intersection with Clarence Street. He built the two red brick houses, each of 10 rooms, known as "Kenly" and "Nulmore" (later "Brampton") in that year. By 1894, P. Langwill had purchased the property, leasing it to Fred Henriques, an accountant. Alfred Pearson a government chemist, was occupying tenant by 1899. The property was known as ''Kenly''. In 1910, the house was vacant, however, in 1920, James Edmends was living there and continued to do so in 1930. By 1941, Edmends had moved to No. 32, and Alfred Williamson was in residence. "Kenly'' is important as an unusually imposing Elizabethan influenced villa in Caulfield, comparing with nos. 25 and 36 Gladstone Parade. As the Yarra became unsuitable as a source of water, several attempts were made to find alternative sources for the growing population of Melbourne. It was not until 1891 that the efforts to sewer Melbourne came to fruition with the setting up of the Melbourne Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW), now known as Melbourne Water. From 1891 until 1992, it was the responsibility of the MMBW to safeguard public health by providing a sewerage system and a safe water supply system. In 1992, The MMBW merged with a number of smaller urban water authorities to form Melbourne Water. The Australian Cerebral Palsy Association ran the Miss Australia Quest and had various titles such as Miss Queensland and Miss Victoria. One branch of the Victorian state competition was the Miss Victorian Government Service Quest. Terri Cott was one of the MMBW’s most popular representatives in the running for the title of Miss Victorian Government Service Quest in 1977. At the time, 18 year old Terri was an Administrative Officer in the Accounts Payable Department and had been with the Board for a year. Terri was crowned as the winner for Miss Victorian Government Service as she was the second highest money raiser with $17,337.72. This also won her a holiday on Brampton Island. Terri was up against 12 other women from other state Government Departments. This staff newsletter highlights the historically significant achievement of Miss Terri Cott being one of the most popular representatives in the running for the title of Miss Victorian Government Service Quest in 1977. This captured achievement not only focuses on Terri's external beauty, but demonstrates her charitable efforts. This newsletter article has historic and social associations with the many women's rights movements in the 1970s. In particular, it relates to the number of challenges the Miss Australia Quest experienced with feminist and activist groups threatening the future of the competition, which forced organisers to examine the appropriateness of the Quest. mmbw, melbourne water, miss mmbw, 1970s, staff

Black Boys Inn is in the market square of Aylesham, England. "Archaeological evidence shows that the site of the town has been occupied since prehistoric times. Aylsham is just over two miles (3 km) from a substantial Roman settlement at Brampton, linked to Venta Icenorum at Caistor St Edmund, south of Norwich, by a Roman road which can still be traced in places - that site was a bustling industrial centre with maritime links to the rest of the empire. Excavations in the 1970s provided evidence of several kilns, showing that this was an industrial centre, pottery and metal items being the main items manufactured. Aylsham is thought to have been founded around 500 AD by an Anglo Saxon thegn called Aegel, Aegel's Ham, meaning "Aegel's settlement". The town is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Elesham and Ailesham, with a population of about 1,000. Until the 15th century, the linen and worsted industry was important here, as well as in North Walsham and Worstead and Aylsham webb or 'cloth of Aylsham' was supplied to the royal palaces of Edward II and III. John of Gaunt was lord of the manor from 1372 and Aylsham became the principal town of the Duchy of Lancaster. Although John of Gaunt probably never came to Aylsham, the townspeople enjoyed many privileges, including exemption from jury service outside the manor and from payment of certain taxes. The village sign depicts John of Gaunt. In 1519 Henry VIII granted a market on Saturdays and an annual fair to be held on 12 March, which was the eve of the feast of St Gregory the pope. Aylsham markets have always been an important feature of the town, and businesses developed to meet the needs of the town and the farming lands around it. Besides weekly markets there were cattle fairs twice a year and, in October, a hiring fair. The historic Black Boys Inn in the Market Place is one of Aylsham's oldest surviving buildings, and has been on the site since the 1650s, although the present frontage dates to between 1710 and 1720. There is a frieze of small black boys on the cornice and a good staircase and assembly room. The Black Boys was a stop for the post coach from Norwich to Cromer, had stabling for 40 horses, and employed three ostlers and four postboys. A thatched waterpump was built in 1911 at Carr's Corner in memory of John Soame by his uncle, a wealthy financier. An artesian well 170 feet (52 m) deep, its canopy is thatched in Norfolk reed. As with many of the other market towns in the county, the weaving of local cloth brought prosperity to the town in medieval times. Until the 15th century it was the manufacture of linen which was the more important, and Aylsham linens and Aylsham canvases were nationally known. From the 16th century linen manufacture declined and wool became more important, a situation that continued until the coming of the Industrial Revolution. Thereafter the principal trade of the town for the 19th century was grain and timber, together with the range of trades to be found in a town which supported local agriculture. Records show that Aylsham had markets and fairs, certainly from the 13th century. Such weekly and annual events were important for the trade that they brought. Annual horse fairs would bring many other traders to the town, and the weekly market would be the occasion for more local trade. The rights of the stallholders in the market place today date back to the rights established in medieval times." Hard cover book. Reliques of Ancient English Poetry Author: Thomas Percy Publisher: George Routledge Editor: Robert Aris Willmott Illustrator: Edward Corbould Date: 1857 Further Information: Green Cloth hardcover with lettering and patterning to spine in gilt. The spine has a Library label with an inscription.fictionThe Reliques of Ancient English Poetry is a collection of ballads and popular songs collected by Bishop Thomas Percy and first published in 1765. Its foundation was a manuscript that became known as the Percy Folio, which Percy discovered in the house of his friend Humphrey Pitt at Shifnal, Shropshire famously found on the floor, with the housemaid using its leaves to light fires. Percy used only forty-five of the folio's ballads in his final book, supplementing them with material from other manuscripts, printed broadsides, and, controversially, some of his own composition or heavy "improvements" of the originals. The three original volumes gather old heroic ballads, songs, romances and historical poetry covering subjects such as border warfare, the supernatural, and the legends of King Arthur and Robin Hood, including famous pieces like 'Chevy Chase' and 'Sir Patrick Spens' a collection of ballads and romances dating from the late medieval period to the seventeenth century, each annotated with Percy's antiquarian commentary.warrnambool, shipwrecked-coast, flagstaff-hill, flagstaff-hill-maritime-museum, maritime-museum, shipwreck-coast, flagstaff-hill-maritime-village, shipwrecked-artefact, book, reliques of ancient english poetry, thomas percy, edward henry corbould, george routledge & sons, robert aris willmott
