This booklet from 1879 was given to the Moorabbin Historical Society when the Robert Keys Leader Cup Trophy, 1882-1883 was re-discovered at 'Box Cottage' Museum in 2009. The Leader Cup Trophy, MAV 00001, is also itemised in this booklet (p9) The Leader Newspaper offered the 'Silver Cup, value Five Guineas for the best fruit garden in the Brighton District. The Proprietors of the English, Scottish and Australian Chartered Bank offered an second prize of three Guineas Commencing in 1856, the Brighton Horticultural Society only disbanded in 2009, and most of their archival holdings were given to the Brighton Historical Society. This booklet gives a good idea of the large varieties of plants, poultry and the skills of the pioneer settlers of the Brighton District.This Booklet describes the Schedule of Prizes for the 1879 Grand Annual Exhibition of the Brighton Horticultural Society in Brighton Victoria. The Booklet was donated to the Moorabbin Historical Society in 2009 upon the disbanding of the Brighton Horticultural Society..at that time. The Moorabbin Historical Society possesses the 1882 'Leader Cup Trophy' (cat 00001) presented to Robert Keys for the best Fruit Garden. This booklet is kept in the same cabinet as the Robert Key's Silver Trophy. After Henry Dendy's Special Survey in 1841 allotments of land were sold or rented to pioneer settlers who developed market gardens , fruit gardens and poultry farms in the Brighton area. Formed in 1990 by a group of current and former social services and administrative staff at the then-Brighton Council, the Lovely Learned Luscious Ladies of Brighton were a group bound by friendship, humour, fun and a delightfully strange knitting project. Each member took turns to add ten rows ten rows of knitting to the piece, following a series of handwritten rules on an attached card. The wool used was not to be bought, but could be "begged, borrowed or stolen", and previous work was not to be altered. The ladies met bi-monthly over dinner at local restaurants and hotels to swap gossip, play games and share the progress of the knitting. The work of twelve women over eighteen years, the piece documents fond memories, personal passions, wedding celebrations, the birth of a grandchild, footy triumphs, holidays and major events. It is a testament to a close-knit friendship, as expressed on the rules card: "MAY THIS PIECE SERVE TO BIND US TOGETHER".Irregular-shaped knitting project consisting of multicoloured knitted stripes in a variety of yarns and stitches created by a group of women over a period of eighteen years. The piece includes numerous additions and embellishments by the various makers, including sequins, beads, shells, badges, ornaments and laminated images.Attached yellow laminated rectangular card with handwritten rules: "1) Nominated member is to knit (in any stitch of choice) 10 rows of your best by the next meeting. 2) The yarn to be used is not to be purchased for the job but can be begged, borrowed or stolen. 3) The colour of yarn is to be left to member's discretion, but judgement will be passed by others. 4) The nominated member will not tamper with, pull out or destroy a previous member's work. 5) On returning the work to the meeting the member shall declare to what genuine purpose the piece will be put on completion (as a guide for future knitters), e.g. rug for favourite chardy, cock sock for lover. 6) The next knitter can (and shall be encouraged to) change the purpose as stated by the previous knitter. 7) This tag must not, without the permission of a majority of members, be removed. James Jones was the son of Philip Jones, a Chairmaker, and Ann Jones who settled in East Brighton after the sale of land c1852 in the area of the Henry Dendy Special Survey of 1841. Mary Ann Moore was the daughter of Thomas Moore, a Gardener, and Sarah Harris who also settled in Brighton c1852. James and Mary Ann Jones settled and raised their family in East Brighton now Bentleigh. Mr John Herron resided at 4 Vickery St Bentleigh until 1989. Sadly Martha Jones born 1888 died in 1890 and James Jones had to purchase a plot at Brighton General Cemetery for her burial. Baby Ethel May was interred in 1893 and then Mary Ann in 1903 and James in 1940. Their stillborn baby was buried in the Wesleyan public grave in 1900James Jones and Mary Ann Moore were born in Brighton c1857 and c 1859 into pioneer market gardener families in the area of the Dendy Special Survey of 1841. They married in 1883 and raised their family in East Brighton, now Bentleigh. Sadly infectious diseases took the lives of many infants throughout the Colony of Victoria due to the poor state of water supply and sewerage disposal and locally the swamps of the Elster Creek were a constant breeding ground. Martha Jones born 1888 died 1890 and was interred in Brighton General Cemetery in a family plot purchased by her father James Jones. In 1893 another daughter Ethel May died and was buried in the family plot. A stillborn baby was interred in the public grave of Brighton General Cemetery in May1900An original paper receipt No.4360 for payment on 22 May 1900 by James Jones to Brighton General Cemetery of 6 shillings for the burial of a stillborn baby Jones in the Wesleyan section of the public graves. There is no fee for ‘re-opening the grave’ purchased by James Jones in 1890 and in which his daughters Martha 1890 and Ethel May 1893 were interred. This pair of embroidered badges were worn on the sleeves of the red City of Brighton mayoral robes until Coat of Arms were granted in 1970 by the British College of Heraldry. Brighton was first incorporated as a borough on 18 January 1859, it became a town on 18 March 1887 and was proclaimed a city on 12 March 1919.Two oval shaped City of Brighton mayoral robe badges, embroidered and mounted on red felt. Known as Elanora, it provided nursing home support for elderly people who were blind or had low vision. This album records the counting of votes for the Member of the Legislative Assembly for the Electoral District of Brighton at the Brighton Town Hall on 28 April 1928. The byelection took place to fill the seat caused by the death of Mr. Snowball. The candidates were Henry Armitage Abbott, William Fyfe Finlayson, Henry Earnest Hall, Martin Hannah, Daniel James Hoban, Alured Kelly, Ian MacFarlan, James Morrison Ramsay, Thomas Ryan. Due to there being no absolute majority, the counting of preferential votes to eliminate defeated candidates took place. For many year the boys from Brighton Grammar Junior School raised money from the sale of Legacy badges and the President would present them with a plaque of appreciation. Between 1991and 1995 the boys raised in excess of $16,000. These two boys are David Menre and Nathan Scuderi as recounted in the February 1994 edition of The Answer. One photo shows Legatee Chas Wilks with Mrs Dorothy Bell sitting with a Brighton school boy playing the trumpet near them. The other photo shows students assembled for the service. A tree was planted in tribute to Legatee Tom Bell. In later years the boys from Brighton Grammar Junior School raised money from the sale of Legacy badges and the serving Legacy President would present them with a plaque of appreciation and photos were taken in front of the tree planted in honour of a late Legatee Tom Bell. Between 1991and 1995 the boys raised in excess of $16,000. On Easter Monday, 5 April 1915, the Mission organised a picnic on the St Andrew's Church grounds in Brighton. Some French and Swedish sailors ere invited to take part in sports. In the centre is probably Ethel Godfrey, Honorary Secretary of the LHLG, who was just back from England where she visited her brother, Dr Frank Godfrey and his family in Scarborough. Along with her sisters Federica and Winifred, they saw the German attack on the English town.\ located on the North Sea. Article published in the Herald, Monday 12 April 1915, page 3: "SAILORS ENJOY OUTING In the spacious grounds of St. Andrew's Church, Brighton, on Easter Monday, the Seamen's Mission held an enjoyable outing, which culminated in a tug-of-war between French and Swedish sailors, and a race in fancy costume. In the evening, at the mission house, on the Australian Wharf, a welcome home was given, after the chapel service, to Miss Ethel Godfrey, who addressed the men, and related some of her adventures at Scarborough, where she was staying when the English seaside resort was raided by German warshlps."The Godfrey sisters and their step-mother had done the voyage to Europe to visit their brother just before the war stars. They witnessed the outbreak of the war, the attacks on Scarborough. When they came back to Australia, the voyage was dangerous as Germans were attacking vessels.
