The medallion is a 1951 Commemorative being 100 years of Government and discovery of gold in Victoria. The winner K.M. Mcleod is believed to be Kenneth Meadowbank McCleod. He enlisted initially in 1915 but was discharged medically unfit in 1916, re enlisted in 1917 No 3840 and served in the 4th LH Regt, discharged from the AIF on 6.12.1919. Refer Cat No 1805P. There were two Billiard Tables in the Soldiers Memorial Institute in what was called the Billiard room. This was a source of income for the Bendigo Branch for some 70 years. One table was sold in 1967 as usage had declined and the last one was sold in 1994..1) Medallion circular bronze, front depicts 2 gold miners, oround outside is text, centre is engraved with details of who was presented with the item. Rear has a depiction of a horse carrying a man and a woman which depicts "Equality & Justice is Freedom" .2) Container for the medallion, rectangular shape brown colour, front has in gold a Coat of Arms with "Victoria" under. inside lid is a cream silk lining with the makers details in gold, medallion is set in red velvet. lid is hinged in brass with a brass closing catch.On face of Medallion, "Centenary of Government of Victoria 1851 - 1951". Henry Sutton is a talented world-wide accepted inventor with inventions relating to the telephone, photography, wireless, cars, motorcycles, and bicycles as well as many more inventions. Henry was also one of four brothers that ran the Sutton's Music Store after the death of their Father Richard Sutton. Henry Sutton taught Applied Electricity at the Ballarat School of Mines in 1883 to 1886. View looking across Main Road to Wingrove Cottage (c.1950s), former home Charles Symons Wingrove. Charles Wingrove was a prominent figure in Victorian local government, as secretary to the Eltham District Road Board and Shire Council from 1858 to 1904, and, as Shire Engineer and Secretary to the Heidelberg Road Board. He was part of the Committee to establish the Church of England at Eltham. The Wingroves were an important pioneer family of Eltham and Wingrove Cottage is one of the most important heritage buildings in Eltham as one of the few surviving 19th century buildings. Reputedly built in 1858, Wingrove Cottage was recorded in the 1859-60 Eltham Road District rates book as a brick house owned and occupied by Wingrove with a Net Annual Value (NAV) of ₤30. In 1861, the year the Church opened, Wingrove's house was identified as a two -roomed brick cottage. Charles Wingrove is buried with other members of his family in the cemetery at St Katherine’s Church, St. Helena. Sweeney's, originally Culla Hill, a former homestead, located on a site bought from the crown in 1842 by Irishman Thomas Sweeney. The cottage is important in the history of Eltham and of architectural interest as an example of a Colonial Style dwelling. The Living room shows a wooden door and floor with rug. A window to the left, two seats and a book case. This was the home of V.C. Eltham Primary School. This building is the earliest building remaining on site today. It was built in 1875 and was the second school building replacing the original 1856 building of stone walls with wooden shingles on the roof. That building needed to be replaced after the stone walls collapsed outwards. In August 1912 the school issued a requisition for remodelling of the school concerned with replacement of the existing windows with larger and wider windows to allow additional light into the school rooms and the erection of a wooden partition in the centre of the room. This work commenced in early 1914 and this photo shows the altered windows. Pre 1921 extension and skylights in roof. Only two low wooden stairs present to enter the porch. These were rebuilt by 1928. A steel mud grate was introduced 1930s/1940s and an infant shelter shed is shown on the 1945 plan. 2228.1 belonged to Ruth Legge. 2228.2 belonged to Mary Gilbert. This book was produced as a souvenir history of Orbost Primary School. The Orbost State School opened on 19th of March 1886 .The school had first operated temporarily in a leased building, and on a half-time basis with SS2745 Jarrahmond. The first head teacher was HT Campbell Mackay. However he remained in charge only until 12th of May 1886. The second HT, John Rowe, served until 1908. On 30th of June 1887, a portable room was provided; it being brought to the area by schooner. The school then had accommodation for 30 pupils; the teacher's welfare was considered because quarters of two rooms were attached. As the population increased so did the needs of the school. This was reflected in the provision of a larger classroom in 1898. During 1910-11 the first approaches were made to the Department for the establishment of a HES in Orbost and this became a reality in 1912. Orbost HES supplied post-primary education in the district until a high school was built in 1948. When fire destroyed the school in 1941 local halls were used as classrooms until a new school was built. Work was quite rapid and a new brick structure was opened by the Hon. A. E. Lind, MLA, on 13th of February 1942. The head teacher then was Leslie Collins. Orbost continued to develop and the new school was soon overtaxed. This resulted in the erection of two Bristol classrooms in 1947. By 1950, when the school population had reached 500 pupils the opening of the new school at Orbost North was welcomed by all concerned. In 1963 the Department purchased land diagonally opposite the school and developed it as a playing area. In 1965 two LTCs were opened in November, and in October 1968 the Brodribb School building was moved to SS2744 Orbost for use as a general purpose room. This book is a useful research resource.Two copies of a yellow paper book book. On the front cover is a sketch of some trees beneath the title which is in green print ( these are the school colours) . Events listed include Thanksgiving Service, Music Festival, Film Festival, Special Centenary Council Meeting, Gymkhana, Parade of Decorated Floats, Spring Flower Show, Massed Bands Display, Display of Art, Naturalisation Ceremony, Solemn High Mass, carnivals and plaque unveiling. 6/One original and one photocopy of an eight page notice paper for the Special Meeting of Caulfield City Council to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the proclamation and declaration of the Caulfield Road District, to be held on 15/10/1957. The booklet includes the agenda, a council summons, a picture of Caulfield’s City Hall and a list of current and past councillors, chairmen, presidents, mayors and Shire Secretaries and town clerks. 7/A letter addressed to F. Campbell from Hazel Da Costa, dated 07/11/1997 regarding the acquisition of pamphletts for the Caulfield Centenary Carnival. The Sutton grange Congregational Church was built in 1865. Original services were held in the home of Mr James Grey who served the church for 50 years. The Bendigo Congregational church originally operated out of the Mechanics Institue building before moving temporarily to the Church of England school room. In May 1858, a meeting was held to establish a permanent building and tenders were called in September 1858. Land was purchased in Forest Street from the estate of Mr WIlkinson and the new brick structure was opened 28/11/1858.Manilla folder titled: Congregational Church Bendigo and district. 30 min colour and sound 16mm film, severely faded, beginning with an interview with a Vietnam widow and going on to explain the help Sydney Legacy gave to bereaved families including outings, health, etc. Lionel Long, who was a Legacy ward, is interviewed and sings one of the ballads he was famous for in the 1960s. A Widow's Club meeting is shown and a party of the Northern Suburbs Progressive Twenties who raised money for Legacy. They were smoking, drinking, and eating what looks like cheerios and slices of bread in a large room hung with streamers and balloons and dancing to pop music. Junior Legatee Karen Miller was interviewed about her experience travelling to Switzerland to represent Australia at the Swiss Bank Centenary, Switzerland, with a boy from NSW, going on to stay with a Legacy family in London for a week. The functions of Legatees are explained as a Legatee is shown with one of his families. Also interviewed is a practising solicitor who attributes his qualification to the help he got from Legacy. Girls are shown rehearsing for their debutante presentation and the film segues to the actual presentation with the Governor Sir Roden Cutler, Governor of NSW, and his wife. Legatees are shown cutting, trucking and delivering firewood to widows. The Shandon was a 1387 ton iron sailing ship, of length 245.9 feet, beam 37.8 feet and draught of 21.3 feet. She was built in 1883 at Port Glasgow and had a chequered career as a trader for nearly 40 years. She was converted to a lighter until the end of WWI then re-rigged as a barque and spent the next four years trading across the Pacific Ocean. In 1922 she was in use as a coal hulk in Adelaide. During WWII she was a coal hulk in Townsville. Shandon had one moment of glory in 1934 when she was involved in Victoria's 100th anniversary celebrations. The Shandon will eventually open as a public display, after restoration. c1912 Barque rigged 1924 Laid up and used as a coal hulk again. 1946 While under tow, got ashore in a cyclone 1935 Re-rigged for Centenary Maritime Exhibition at Melbourne then reverted to coal hulk. Original deckhouse from sailing vessel Shandon. Deckhouse would have been used as crew's quarters including galley, eating and sleeping space as well as room for storage. 4 portholes and 2 doors with separate galley compartment with own split door. deck house, shandon -

The first meeting of the 1st Bendigo Guides was held by Miss Merle Bush on the 22nd of August 1922 in the St Paul' School Room. Twelve girls were present. Miss Bush was given permission to open the Company by Miss R.
