Captain Benjamin Francis (Frank) Helpmann was once the owner of the S.S. CHAMPOIN, then owned it in partnership with S. G. Henty. S.S. CHAMPION was an early steamship and one of the first coastal traders to operate between Melbourne and Portland in Victoria from December 1853 until August 1857, when she collided with the S.S. LIRDY BIRD in the open sea off Cape Otway. CHAMPION was returning from Melbourne, and sank with thirty-two people still on board. The thirty others were saved by the LIRDY BIRD (ref. The Story of a Port : Portland, Victoria, by Noel F. Learmonth)This picture Lithograph) is associated with the S.S. Champion, which is listed on the Victorian Heritage Database VHR S110. The wreck of the SS Champion is significant historically as one of Victoria's worst shipwrecks. As an early steamship it played an important part in the development of and communications between the Western district and Melbourne . Although the site has not yet been located it is predicted to be highly significant archaeologically with the potential to yield information about early coastal shipping and the western district passenger and cargo trade. It is significant technically as an example of an early iron screw steamship, and is part of the western district steamship resource including the SS Casino, SS Coramba and SS Julia Percy.Painting. Lithograph of the schooner S S Champion, hand coloured watercolour, in a cedar frame behind glass. Unusual cross member bracing on the corners of the frame (one missing). Title "Iron S.S. Sports Clubs in Kew in the final decades of the 19th century and in the early 20th century were often umbrella organisations with facilities for a number of sports. Typically in Kew, this included teams in lawn bowls, tennis and croquet. The Kew Bowling Club was formed in 1880 while the privately owned Auburn Heights Recreation Club was opened in 1904. By 1998, the two Clubs decided to amalgamate at the Auburn Heights site in Barkers Road, forming the Kew Heights Sports Club. The combined club was itself taken over by the Melbourne Cricket Club in 2012 becoming MCC Kew Sports Club. In 2017 MCC Kew closed and its landholding was subsequently sold to Carey Baptist Grammar School. Both the Kew and Auburn Heights Clubs assembled important collections. These historically significant and large collections were donated to the Society in 2020. The collections include manuscripts, pictures, trophies, plans, honour boards etc. The combined collections of the four sporting clubs making up the collection number hundreds of items that are historically significant locally. They are also significant to the sporting history of the greater Melbourne area and to the sports of lawn bowls and tennis in Australia in the 19th and 20th centuries. The collection illuminates two of the Victorian historic themes - 'Building community life' through forming community organisations and 'Shaping cultural and creative life' by participating in sport and recreation.Silver trophy on stand awarded to the Ladies' Single Champion of the Kew Heights Tennis Club in the years 1998 to 2014. Although the medal is inscribed 'Warrnambool R C' we believe it to be a Warrnambool Bowling Club medal. The Warrnambool Bowls Club gave this medal to W&DHS in 1968 describing it as a medal won by life member William Kucks, club champion in 1895. Also newspaper reports show that William Kucks was the bowls club champion in 1895. No record has been found of William Kucks belonging to either rowing or rifle clubs. William Kucks was a long-time resident of Warrnambool, operating a boarding house in Timor Street in the 1860s and then a bakery in the same street for many years. He served as a town councilor 1899-1901.This badge is of considerable interest as a memento of a Warrnambool sporting club in the 1890s and of a well-known 19th century Warrnambool resident and town councilor 1899-1901.This brass star shaped medal has a circular centre with text surrounded by a raised narrow annulus and eight near triangular hollow shapes interspersed with small spheres. on the obverse, The reverse has a metal hook and clip. There is a ring attached to the tip of one of the triangles with a second ring through it. Elizabeth (Betty) Ann Speak attended Clarendon Presbyterian Ladies College 1937 - 1938. She won the Junior Tennis Champion in 1938. Betty worked as a telephonist at Coleraine Post Office after leaving CPLC in 1938. In 1949, she married Leslie James Steff from Konongwootong. They had two daughters. In 1967 Betty returned to work at the Coleraine Post Office and worked for 17 years, moving to the Hamilton PO after the Coleraine PO closed around 1980. She continued to play tennis throughout her adult years. Daughter Gwenda Steff, who donated the trophy to the school in 2016, says 'Mum was passionate about her tennis. She had a formidable backhand shot that few could return. She played Saturday afternoon competition tennis up until her late 40's and she instilled her love of the game into both my sister Margaret and myself. Mum was always too humble to acknowledge her amazing abilities - both on and off the tennis court. But this is an early public acknowledgement of her skills.'Medium silver cup with double handles and silver base and stem on melamine standEngraved on face of cup: C P L C / Junior Tennis Champion / 1938 / BETTY SPEAKbetty-speak, sports, tennis, trophy, 1930s

This Pewter Mug Collection is a set of 32 trophies won by Australian Alpine skiers Ross and Malcolm Milne between 1959 and 1964. Ross and Malcolm grew up on their family's tobacco property in Myrtleford, and began skiing at Falls Creek at an early age. They were both taught by Austrian Sigi Haberzettl, who was chief coach at Falls Creek for 17 years. Ross went on to win the North-Eastern District Ski Association (NEDSA) Junior Championships for three years in a row. In 1961 Ross was a member of the Australian team which competed against New Zealand in the Inter-Dominion Championships. In 1963, he won the Downhill and Alpine Combined title at the Australian Championships, while placing second in the Grand Slalom event. Ross Milne was selected in the Australian team that participated in the 1964 Olympic Winter Games at Innsbruck, Austria. A few days before the opening of the Games, on 25 January 1964, he tragically lost his life when he crashed into a tree during a training run for the Men's Downhill. He was only 19 years of age. Malcolm became a member of the Australian Junior Ski Team to Japan at the age of 14. He won all of the NEDSA children’s races and won the State Title in 1966. Malcolm continued to achieve great success, winning the Australian Championships for the next five years. At the end of 1969 he won Gold in the Val d'Isere FIS Alpine Ski World Cup Downhill, Australia's first Alpine Ski World Cup medal. He was on the Australian National Ski Team for eight years, representing his country at the 1968 and 1972 Olympic Games and the 1966 and 1970 World Championships before turning professional in 1972. Malcolm Milne was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 1985. In 2000 he received the Australian Sports Medal for his contribution to skiing. In 2004, Ski & Snowboard Australia granted Milne Life Membership for the contribution he made to the sport by becoming the first World Cup medal winner in Australian winter sports history, and the subsequent impact his performances have had on future athletes. Malcolm Milne was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for services to skiing in 2016.This item is significant because it is part of a collection which documents the career of two outstanding Australian sportsmen.A pewter mug awarded for the Albury Ski Club Mens Jump Champion 1962.
