The portrait was commissioned by St Leonard's College in 1989. Mr Cornish sat for the artist in his office dressed in his cap and gown. Initially the portrait was hung in the main school hall, before being moved to the Cornish Campus in the mid 1990's.Richard Burnet Cornish was principal of St Leonard's College from January 1971 to October 1989. He was a dreamer, a driver, a doer and a visionary leader who purchased the land for Cornish Campus in July 1981 and presided at the official opening in February 1987. The first brochure produced by the Cornish Project Committee, soon after agreement was reached with St leonard's for the purchase of the property. 45,000 brochures were printed and distributed by volunteers throughout suburbs around the College, to as far afield as Beaumaris, Hampton & Lyndhurst.The brochure lists the College website as “www.cornishcollege.org” which was used until VRQA registration was completed. This "Cornish" organ was imported by Thomas Sebire of Wandin in 1911. In 1942 it was bequeathed to his daughter, Edna (Mrs. G. Andrews of Wandin) and by her to her daughter, Beverly (Mrs. L.D. Creek of Nhill) in 1971. Mrs Creek has made this organ available for the Wandin Historical Display. Mrs. G. Andrews was organist of the Wandin Methodist Church from 1927 to 1942. With much fanfare and anticipation the Grand Opening of Cornish College was held on Sunday the 12 February 2012. The hall was filled to capacity. It commenced with a Welcome by Rev Dr Robert Johnson, the Welcome to Country, National Anthem and Official Opening and Unveiling of the Plaque. This was then followed by a Musical Item, the dedication of College and Commissioning of the Leaders, a Visual Presentation and short speech by the Reverend David Pargeter. The Inaugural Cornish College Cocktail Party was held on Friday 16 Dec 2011, on the lawn outside the Sustainability Centre overlooking the lake.It was held on the day when the transfer of land title of Cornish Campus to Cornish College happened i.e. the first official day of Cornish College.Two A4 colour printed pages sent as an email to Michael and Pam Sutton.
