Post Office Receiving Pillar was Collected from Warrnambool City Council’s Scott Street Depot and transported to Flagstaff Hill, stored in the Barracks area Friends of Flagstaff Hill began the project of restoring the Post Office Receiving Pillar in early 2011. The replacement dome required a pattern to be made from paper, then timber, then someone to manufacture it. The cast iron body required sand blasting and undercoating. The pillar was installed in Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village in March 2014. A specialist visited the Village and painted the pillar with 7 coats of ‘post office red’ then completed the job with gold paint on the details. In 2015 an information plate of brass was fitted to the Pillar in the position that would have originally announced the clearing times. It was originally manufactured by G Couch, Engineer, Alliance Iron Works, Melbourne. Gordon Couch passed away in June 1896 and his Works were offered for auction in November 1897. HISTORY OF POST OFFICE RECEIVING PILLARS In 1851 ‘pillar boxes’ were installed at roadside locations in the island of Jersey, England; they had already been successful in several European countries. The use of new prepaid, adhesive postage stamps as well as the roadside pillar boxes meant there was no need for the public to take a trip to the Post Office just to post a letter. By 1855 London had installed its first six Pillar Boxes. In 1856 the pillar boxes were first introduced in Sydney. These were circular with a crown on the dome, supported by leaves. Early Victoria Mail was originally collected by ‘letter carriers’, first appointed in Melbourne in 1841, equipped with leather bag and hand bell. He wore a red coat with brass buttons and a black top hat! In 1844 two wooden receiving boxes were erected in Melbourne. The first cast iron boxes were installed in South Melbourne (Emerald Hill) and were still in service until 1967. They were a fluted circular design and made in England. In the early 1860’s the ‘low door round’ design posting box was introduced, being circular and surrounded by a crown, with two broad embossed bands around its circumference. The clearance door was in front of the box and low down. These were made in Australia. In the early 1870’s square boxes with a tapering top were being used. These too were made in Australia by different manufacturers with slight variations on style such as the orientation and number of slots. Next came the circular boxes again, similar to the ‘low door round’ but with the clearance door extending to just below the posting slot, often referred to as ‘high door round’. These boxes did not have embossed bands. In 1887 small cast iron boxes were introduced, attached to posts and poles and called ‘lamp post receivers’. Around 1930 a ‘London’ model was used in Victoria. It was copied from the flat-domed type in London but made in Tasmania. … [References: Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village records, The Argus, 11th April, 1890, The Argus, 2nd July, 1896, The Argus, 30th Nov. 1897, “Stamps.Au” http://www.stampsau.com, 4th April 2011 (Extracted from “Australian Street Posting Boxes” by Ken Sparks – out of print)] Post Office Receiving Pillar, or letterbox.1885 "High Door Round" design, restored 2014 Tall cast iron sylinder with decorative dome cap, slot in side, hinged door with handle shaped as a fist. In 1869, the Warrnambool Meat Preserving Company commenced their business on the site, where it operated until 1875 when it was sold to the directors of the Warrnambool Woolen Mill Company. After being destroyed by fire in 1882 it wasn’t until 1910 that the Warrnambool Chamber of Commerce was approached by Marcus Saltau and Peter McGennan to invest in a new mill. The original directors were James Dickson, P J McGennan, Robert Swinton, M Saltau, and J W Younger. In 1955 the Warrnambool Woollen Mill formed a partnership with the Wangaratta Woollen Mills. Dunlop bought the mill in 1968. From that time until its closure in 2000 it had a number of different owners, the last being the Smith Family Industries. this calendar is an advertising item associated with the Woollen Mill.A common item associated with a long running Warrnambool business.Large 6 page calendar for 1972 with coloured photographs of vintage cars.with Warrnambool Woollen Mill logo underneath with months [printed in black on yellow at the bottom of each page. The Donor states- " The small travel icon is a work of ecclesiastical embroidery tutor Alyona Petrova (2018 Crimea). She is a former Head of Embroidery workshop in the Trinity Iona Monastery. Techniques used include 'diaper' goldwork and 'facework' in split stitch with hand dyed raw silk. Travel icons are logical descendants of the huge travel iconostasis, which was taken by Russian nobility during wartime campaigns in the 16-017th centuries. It was impossible to bring heavy wooden icons, and they were changed to the embroidered ones. Nowadays small travel icons - both wooden, metal and textile - are popular to use in private cars for the 'safe trip'.Brown leather pouch, buttonholed around outer edge, and couched with gold purl. Donor's mother brought this from the west of Ireland in 1950. Said to have been embroidered by her grandmother and her ladies in 1780-1800. (This may be a later rather than actual date). Knotting was a genteel pastime for leisured ladies requiring little concentration, so conversation could be carried out. Favoured at Court and practised in England in the late 17th C in William and Mary's reign and Queen Anne's reign in the early 18th C. Addit: Old article written by Lady Geraldine Amies states "the cover was designed and embroidered by the donor's great grandmother, with the help of her attendants, in Westport, County Mayo, Ireland about 1830 and completed during the long voyage to Australia in 1850".Knotting was a genteel pastime for leisured ladies requiring little concentration, so conversation could be carried out. Favoured at Court and practised in England in the late 17th C in William and Mary's reign and Queen Anne's reign in the early 18th C. A knotting shuttle, larger than a tatting shuttle, made knots at every quarter inch or 6 mm intervals in string, linen, silk or wool. Mrs Mary Delaney enjoyed knotting and preferred linen thread which was stronger. The Ulster Museum in Belfast holds an embroidered bedcover by Delany, one of the few complete pieces of embroidery made by her. The threads between the knots was dependent on the thickness of the thread. This fashionable occupation was often mocked by men, Sir Charles Sedley, a wit and libertine wrote a verse mocking Queen Mary, the dull Protestant wife of William 111: "Blest we, who from such queens are freed/ Who, buy vain superstition led,/ Are always telling beads;/But here's a queen now, thanks to God/ Who, when she rides in Coach abroad/ Is always knotting threads. In the Spectator of 1712 it was suggested that men might take up knotting. Dr Johnson attempted to learn the skill but told Boswell "I once tried knotting: Dempster's sister undertook to teach me, but I could not learn it." Knotted linen thread couched onto white linen bed cover. embroidery, whitework, bedcover, 18th century, ireland

Yunjian (Chinese cloud collar), as a uniquely charming element in the culture of Hanfu (traditional Chinese clothing), is like a magnificent cloud resting on the shoulders of Hanfu, narrating the historical stories that have endured for thousands of years. The origin of the name "Yunjian"（Chinese cloud collar） can be traced back to the culture of ethnic costumes. However, due to the reverence for "Heaven" in Chinese civilization, it has been assimilated and applied, thus becoming a model of the ethereal and grand ethnic costume culture that embodies the concept of "harmony between man and nature". The cutting and layout of Yunjian emphasize rich layers. There are gradations in size, interweaving of lengths, and variations in color among the pieces. The decorative embroidery techniques include various skills such as patch embroidery, bead embroidery, couching, beading, satin stitch, and Pekin knot stitch. These techniques make Yunjian resemble clouds, rainbows, or the flower beds of the four seasons, filling it with charm and sentiment. Complex, especially the various embroidery and it is an extremely important part of China's intangible cultural heritage. Blue silk collar embroidered with butterflies and flowers in colourful satin, Peking and chain stitch with small areas of gold metal thread couching. Lined with plain silk fabric.
