The set of 30 cards were used by Miss Frida Striezel 1898. A rare, interesting set of numbered 1 - 30 cardboard cookery instruction cards - The Department of Public Instruction, Victoria Australia. They instructed how to prepare very Australian dishes with an English influence - e.g., Yorkshire Pudding, Pea Soup, Steak and Kidney Pie. The Government Printer's name indicates these were produced between 1887 and 1906. The cards are stored in a purple floral damask drawstring bag. There is handwritten sheet of paper with the above information.Handwritten in grey pencil at the top of every card is 'Frida Striezel'. On the back of Card 2 is handwritten in faded black ink No 1 -30 the title of the 30 recipes on the cards. The Cookery instruction cards show that in the early 20th century the Victorian Government was concerned about domestic education and produced the set of cards to help meet that need.A collection of cookery cards numbered 6 to 33. Each card is stiff cream cardboard with black printing. A number in the top right corner VICTORIA DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION COOKERY INSTRUCTION CARD. Then a recipe name and instructions under headings INGREDIENTS, UTENSILS REQUIRED, METHOD. At the bottom of the page (Set of 33 cards. 1s. ; 1 card, 1/2d ) (Copyright). Some examples of the recipes included are Cabbage, Steak and Kidney Pie, Stewed Fish, Sultana Cake. Some cards have recipes printed on the back. There also handwritten notes in pencil and ink on the back of some cards. All cards have three holes punched in the side at the top, middle and bottom. They are tied to a cardboard binding with red linen tape. The front of the binding has a decorative print of red flowers on green leafed stems. Not Gould although on spine. Minutes of the SMB council 14 April 1891 "6, A requisition from Professor Krause for a new work on the birds of Australia was referred to the Education committee. Broinowski was commisioned by the Department of Public Instruction in New South Wales to supply them with pictures of Australian birds which he published in 6 volumes from 1887 - 1891. Gracius Broinowski was born in Poland in 1837. To avoid conscription with the Russian army he roamed Europe in poverty,his possessions having been stolen earlier in Germany. Hearing tales of the Australian gold fields, he borderd the 'Windjammer' bound for Victoria as a deckhand. Broinowski swam ashore at Portland, Victoria in 1857 age twenty. For seven years he walked from one rural settlement to another working as a shepherd, stockman and independent farmer. In 1864 Bronoiwski married in Melbourne and found work with Hamel & Ferguson (print sellers and publishers). 'The Birds of Australia' was finalised in 1891 with 303 full page illustrations lithographed in colour with notes on over 700 species. Limited to 1000 copies the edition sold out quickly. Bronowski died in 1913 at Mosmon NSW, aged 76. He was survived by his wife, a daughter and 6 sons.Green hard cover book, black leather spine and corners.
