Cr. W.D. Vaughan in 'Kew's Civic History' (1960) records that: "In connection with the Melbourne Centenary Celebrations in 1934, the Kew Council decided to organise a strong post as an appropriate gesture of welcome to H.R.H. the Duke of Gloucester. Also that the municipality be represented by a symbolic floral float in the Royal pageant. This was a striking entry and won first prize, and evoked much comment on account of its originality and truly Australian motif." The photograph of the Kew Strong Post was once part of the Municipal Collection of the former City of Kew and was presented to the Kew Historical Society before the move from the Walpole Street (Kew) Town Hall to new Civic offices in Charles Street in 1971.Historic photograph of participation by the City of Kew in celebrations for a royal visitFramed and glazed photograph on its original inscribed mount and original frame of the Kew "Strong Post" in St Kilda Road on the occasion of the visit to Melbourne of the Duke of Gloucester. This programme details the bands that participated in the 1934 brass band contests at South Street. Called the "Centenary" contest, it was a celebration of the first 100 years of the State of Victoria and attracted bands from across Australia and New Zealand. Special guests were the Duke of Gloucester and the Band of His Majesty's Grenadier Guards who were touring Australia at the time. The contest included all grades of bands and was judged a huge success. This programme is significant as it signifies a major historical even on the brass band calendar and the visits of eminent people from England. It also displays all the band from around Australia and New Zealand that took part, and the grades that they participated in. This programme shows how a typical brass band contest at South Street would have been run and the sections that were available to competitors. The item is a small programme printed on yellowed paper and covered with a soft card cover. These boots belonged to Captain Charlie Rogers of the Australian Army who wore these and ceremonial regalia when he was part of the Guard of Honour during the visit of the Duke of Gloucester in 1934. The visit was part of Victoria’s centenary celebrations and the Duke officially opened the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance. Rogers was a well-known Warrnambool identity in the 1930s, 40s and 50s as a horseman and an Army identity. He built a house in Birdwood Avenue, Warrnambool, in 1935 and was a long-serving Warrnambool Show official as a judge of equine events. Rogers died in 1961. These items are of great interest as examples of the boots worn by Army Lighthorse personnel in the 1930s. The mechanism for keeping the boots in good condition is of some technological interest. They are also of interest because they belonged to a well-known 20th century Warrnambool person. These are two knee-high brown leather boots with brown laces. The boots are slightly scuffed. Inside the boots are two pieces of red-striped canvas. The boots have wooden inserts to support the boots in storage. These wooden inserts, all varnished, are in four pieces - a solid foot shape to fit in the foot of the boots, two pieces shaped to fit the calf of the leg padded with green felt, one with slight indents at the top and the bottom and the other with a decided groove and the centre piece that has a hole cut out to fit the shape of the other two. This last piece has a wooden handle with a metal attachment. There is only one handle as it can be screwed out and fitted to either wooden insert. On the two wooden inserts ‘R ‘ for right and ‘L’ for left, marked twice on each insert.charles rogers, duke of gloucester, warrnambool

A photo of the visit by the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester to Legacy clubrooms on 27 November 1945. The photo appears in the Argus newspaper and the caption read: 'During her busy tour of service clubs yesterday the Duchess, while at the Legacy Club, accepted a cup of tea from Mrs E Sherwen, wife of the senior vice-president of Legacy.' The article continued that the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester were welcomed by the President W A Perrin and his wife and Legatee Kemsley. Mr Perrin explained that Legacy has accepted the responsibility of caring for children of deceased service men, and that since 1922 27,000 children have been given a chance at least equal to the one they might have had their fathers lived.
