HENRY SMERDON (Harry) HOLMES was born in 1897 at the family property, ’Sauchieburn’, 17 km north of Ballarat, in the Ascot district. He was the youngest of four children. After finishing his education at St Patrick’s College, Ballarat, Henry joined the Holmes family farming interests. At the age of 18 he enlisted and served with AIF in Egypt, France and Belgium 1915-1918. Henry served at the famous battlegrounds of Ypes and Somme in the Australian Army 8th Battalion. He was a Driver with the 4th D.A.C. According to his Soldier's Pay Books (Cat. No. 20112) Holmes Registration number was 7983. He was Catholic and enlisted in the Third Military District on 17 September 1915, and embarked on 8 November 1915. Holmes was in the 18th AASC Unit with the rank of Driver at that time. On 15 November 1918 Holmes was promoted to Lance Corporal. He received leave on: * 3 August 1917 - London (10 days) * 19 February 1918 - Paris (10 days) * 27 August 1918 - London (14 days) In 1922 Harry married Edith Pickford of 'Yeovil', Clunes, and they lived at 'Sauchieburn' with Henry's brother Willie. In 1933 Harry and Edith built a new timber home 'Launchley' (Ascot) on the rise east of 'Sauchieburn' on the Ballarat - Maryborough Road. The home was built by Con Zilles to the designs of Clegg and morrow. In 1938 Harry and Edith purchased a property at Derrinallum, Victoria and called it 'Launchley Park' on their first son's return from World War 2. In 1953 Harry purchased William and Charlotte's portion of 'Sauchieburn' for his son, Bill, and daughter-in-law Margaret. Orbost & District Historical Societysheet music, Ten Pretty Girls, 1940's
Ten Pretty Girls was composed by Jimmy Kennedy and Will Grosz wrote the lyrics. The song was written in the 1930's. Broadcasting from Sydney from 1936, Jim Davidson’s ABC Dance Band, with the trumpeter Jim Gussey, the vocalist Alice Smith and the trombonist and arranger George Trevare, became the most popular in the country. It presented dance programs on Friday and Saturday evenings and played for other ABC shows including `Out of the Bag’ and `A.B.C. Parade’. In 1937-39 the band made three interstate tours, with a variety of artists including Bob Dyer, Tex Morton and Gladys Moncrieff. Davidson was a strict but encouraging leader who inspired great loyalty in his players. Set of nine dockets, notes that were located in a plastic container - see history of object: 1 - docket - H R Hammond, Gentlemen's clothes cleaner, dyer and tailor - 20/5/1920 - cleaning 13/- 2 - ditto 6/5/1920 - 6/6d 3 - written note to Alex Cameron from F J Smith (?), regarding a book title 22/3/1920 4 - docket from Norman Bros Stationers, for a paper knife, 1/9d, 7/5/1920 5 - docket from Miss Allpress Registry office sending a Mr William Spencer, dated 23/4/1920 - has the address details on rear and those of H. S Dix. 6 - note - possibly arising from a meeting, undated, about the northern suburbs. 7 - Handwritten note dated 23/6/1920 about a person (cant make out name) knocked down in Flinders St at Spencer St - received two pounds compensation 8 - Receipt for a subscription to Science and industry journal for 12 issues, 1920 - from the Commonwealth Institute of Science and Industry. 9 - Docket or receipt for purchases during 1919 and 1920 from McEwans of Elizabeth St Melbourne.trams, tramways, mmtb, chairman, accidents
