The Hamilton-Smith collection was donated by the children of Grace Mary Hamilton-Smith nee Ellwood (1911-2004) and John Hamilton-Smith (1909-1984) who settled in Wodonga in the 1940s. The Ellwood family had lived in north-east Victoria since the late 1800s. Grace’s mother, Rosina Ellwood nee Smale, was the first teacher at Baranduda in 1888, and a foundation member of the C.W.A. Rosina and her husband Mark retired to Wodonga in 1934. Grace and John married at St. David’s Church, Albury in 1941. John was a grazier, and actively involved in Agricultural Societies. The collection contains significant items which reflect the local history of Wodonga, including handmade needlework, books, photographs, a wedding dress, maps, and material relating to the world wars. This item is unique, handmade and has a known owner. It forms part of a significant and representative historical collection which reflects the local history of Wodonga. It contributes to our understanding of social and family life in early twentieth century Wodonga, as well as providing interpretative capacity for themes including local history, social history and women’s history. This technique originated in sixteenth century Europe and became popular in England in the nineteenth century. In the nineteenth and early twentieth century prior to the mass production of clothing and textiles, needlework, alongside motherhood, was the defining work of women. Hand sewing and embroidery was central in the everyday lives and domestic roles of women.This item is unique, handmade and has a known owner. In the Edwardian era (1901-1910) Art Nouveau influence saw designs become more intricate featuring graceful curves and motifs inspired by nature with lighter more delicate designs. The brass lid is ornate embossed with a floral and scroll design.The lid is similar to those made by Zeccoli D'Azeghio of Bologna, Italy but no maker's mark is visible. Zeccoli is probably a shop name located on d'AZeghio Street in Bologna in early 20th Century. It no longer exists.This is a typical Art Nouveau influenced design of the Edwardian era. The album is related to a Survey the Caulfield Historical Society developed in collaboration with the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) and Caulfield City Council to identify historic buildings within the City of Caulfield that warranted the protection of a National Trust Classification. The donor George Lister Coop was about 21 years of age when he took this photo in 1958. This photo is of Annesley Home for the Aged at 692-694 Whitehorse Road. It was originally a Methodist, later a Uniting Church facility. The new section in the photo was part of an extension built in 1958. The Queen Anne / Edwardian brick attic home was built in c1908 for William Pilkington, a manufacturer and was called 'St Martins'. Ownership stayed in this family until c1950. A new brick veneer 2 storey building sits adjacent to a red brick Edwardian home. The Edwardian style house, built in the early years of the 20th century, is at 181 O'Shanassy Street, Sunbury and for a time it was the residence of former Shire of Bulla, Shire Engineer, John McKerrow. Over the years it has a number of owners and has been well maintained. A non-digital coloured photograph of an Edwardian style weatherboard house with a corrugated iron roof. It was originally a double fronted house but an addition was built on the right side of the house at a later date. The middle section of the house extends with a bay window. The Edwardian building was opened on the 23rd January 1916 and was blessed by Archbishop Mannix. It was the convent for the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart and the building functioned as a convent in Sunbury for the next 109 years. It closed on 13th July 2025. For many years the Sisters of St. Joseph were teachers at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School.
