This is a program for the events held in the 1992 Glenelg Games. These were held annually and began in 1982. The activities in 1992 included swimming, softball, ballroom dancing, surfing, tennis, shearing, go carting and croquet. The Games are organized by the Glenelg Sports Assembly, a regional body with representatives of sporting clubs, local government and interested individuals. The Assembly aims to promote sport in the Glenelg Region and hosts and organizes a number of other activities as well as the annual Games. This program is of interest as it demonstrates the number and range of activities that were included in the Glenelg Games of 1992. This is a booklet of 12 stapled pages. It contains, photographs, a programme of events, a map of Warrnambool, a Chairman’s Message and advertisements. The printing material is in black, blue and yellow tonings. The story written by a journalist who had been touring Australian Imperial Force (AIF) camps in Malaya. All the available nurses joined the journalist in their mess room to be interviewed. Matron O. Paschke said that the local residents treat the nurses like film stars, sending them baskets of orchids, presents of fruit and invitations to their homes and clubs. All the nurses seem happy and fit, and have become used to the heat in the tropics. On their time off some play golf or tennis, others go swimming. When they first arrived at the hospital the amahs were there to meet them in the dark before sunrise, but they couldn't speak english and the nurses couldn't speak Malay. These are plans for alterations to the residence and surgery of Dr Angus in Koroit Street, Warrnambool (Birchwood). Dr William Roy Angus (1901-1970), after several years practising as a doctor in South Australia and northern Victoria, came to Warrnambool in 1939, purchasing the practice of Dr John Hunter Henderson (Birchwood). Dr Angus was a dominant figure in medical and community circles in Warrnambool for 30 years, becoming an important ophthalmologist in his later years. Birchwood, with its beautiful gardens, lawns and tennis court was suitable for entertaining and many distinguished people, including Vice-Regal personnel and representatives of the Red Cross stayed at the house. It was also a meeting place for representatives of the many organizations with which Dr Angus was associated (over 20 groups including the Good Neighbour Council, the Boys’ Club, the Food For Britain appeal, the Historical Society, Rostrum and the National Fitness Council). Birchwood or earlier buildings on the site was used as a residence/surgery by many doctors in Warrnambool, going back to the 1860s and Dr Angus and his family lived there from 1939 to 1967. In 1998 Birchwood was demolished and a new Warrnambool Police Station was built on the site. These plans are of interest as they show the 1939 alterations to the building known as Birchwood in Koroit Street Warrnambool. We have a good floor plan and a drawing of the front of the building so we know what it looked like in the late 1930s. Both Birchwood and Dr Angus are important in Warrnambool’s history. These are four sheets showing alterations for the residence of Dr Angus (Birchwood) in Koroit Street Warrnambool. One sheet shows the front of the house in colour drawn in ink and pencil and paint and there is a copy of this in black and white. The other drawing is of the plans for the house drawn in pencil and ink and with some red and blue colouring. This is Issue No. 5 of "The Curlip". The magazine is a compilation of research from a trip by the Orbost & District Historical Society to Bete Bolong. The Bete Bolong Prisoner of War Camp was located on the south side of the Buchan - Orbost Rd. From November 1943 to November 1945, Italian prisoners of war were based at Bete Bolong, cultivating maize, peas, beans and other vegetables on local farms. Unlike other 'farming' prisoners of war, those at Bete Bolong did not live with the farming families, but at a Prisoner of War Control Centre on Crown land overlooking the Snowy River Flats. About fifty Italian prisoners lived at the centre, along with an Australian Military Force staff of approximately seven people. The prisoners were driven to and from the farms each day. Three of them apparently simply swam across the river to work. They worked a six day week, with Sundays off. Although they were provided with rations, both prisoners and staff maintained vegetable and flower gardens. They were also skilled at cooking 'anything' they could catch, and at making illegal "grappa". Very few of the Italians were experienced farm workers. Some of them used their skills to make things for the families they worked for; a cabinet-maker made furniture , a cobbler made shoes, etc. They interacted with the local community and, although they were not supposed to go within one kilometre of town, some were found at local dances on Saturday nights. As recreation the prisoners were allowed to walk along the road to the west of the camp. Local people from both sides of the river could hear them sing as they walked. The prisoners also helped to construct an 'ant bed' tennis court on a property adjacent to the centre. Although now overgrown, the site of the tennis court can still be discerned as a flat area above the site of the centre. The tennis racquet belonged to John Phillips who used it in the late 1950s / early 1960s. It was not a new racquet when Ihe started using it, but a pass-me-down from his father. He purchased his first new racquet in the mid 60s and gave this racquet to the Orbost Museum to go in the racquet press so that people would have an idea of what the item (press) was used for - to stop wooden framed racquets with gut strings from warping. John played tennis at Orbost Tennis Club from 1969-1981 - vice president 1971-77, president 1977-81, secretary of Orbost & District Tennis Association 1975-81. He is a Life Member of the Orbost Tennis Club (1980). John is also a Life Member of the Orbost & District Historical Society.This item is an example of an early piece of sports' equipment which was manufactured using different materials.A wooden tennis racquet with a reinforced cane handle. BHS CollectionA Davis Tyre pump. A black metal cylinder four centimetres diameter and 48 centimetres long is attached to a metal plate four centimetres wide and 14 centimetres long. A one centimetre diameter, 50 centimetre long rubber hose is attached to the bottom of the cylinder has a metal fitting on the other end. The wooden handle on top of the cylinder is 17 centimetres long and three centimetres diameter, it has a one centimetre diameter, 44 centimetre long metal rood attached to the middle of it which goes into the cylinder and presumably has something on the end of it to push air through the rubber hose. Written by Michael Anderson on RDHS Facebook on March 2016 CITY ROAD, RINGWOOD 1959 My family moved to City Road in 1959. At that time, it was a narrow rutted dirt road, with a large drain running on the northern side, and a wide nature strip complete with big wattle trees on the southern side, ideal for playing cricket and other games. There was no Salvation Army Citadel, nor was there a Lutheran Church. As you proceed from Wantirna Road towards Jubilee Park, there were no houses on the right hand side at all until you reached our house, 14 City Road, which at the time was Lot 51. On the corner where the Lutheran Church now stands, there was an old rusty farm gate, attached to a very weathered wooden post. This indicated that at some stage, City Road had been a private road. This rusty old gate was never closed, but it was a remnant of bygone days. Ireland St, Regina St, and Greenwood Avenue south of Haig Street were all narrow dirt roads as well. Jubilee Park Oval was fairly new, and there was no grandstand. The players and staff had to make do with a small wooden building that looked like a garden shed. Just beyond the southern end of the oval were growing many wild pumpkins, and I understand that the land had been a rubbish tip in the not so distant past. The park also had a couple of tennis courts. There was no road from Jubilee Park to Reilly St, and Reilly St didn't go all the way through from Wantirna Road to Great Ryrie St. It was broken by a creek. Aquinas College was an orchard. As you proceed up City Road from Wantirna Road, The Salvation Army church is on the left corner. The Hobbs family lived on that corner, in an old house on a block which was bordered by a huge hedge. The house next door in Wantirna Road, which is also Salvation Army land now, was owned by the Bayliss family. Mrs Bayliss was a teacher at Ringwood High. The first house in City Rd proper was at no. 1 to 5. The Roberts family lived there in an old weatherboard house on an acre of land. Mr Roberts was a carpenter who had built our house at No. 14, and he lived there with his wife and two sons, Graeme and Max. Eventually, they wanted more space, so they moved to the acre. Next door to the Roberts was Ted O'Regan at no. 7 to no. 9. He appears to have been a widower, and he lived by himself in an old wooden house which was surrounded by a large veranda on about 2/3 acre. Next door to Ted O'Regan lived his brother Jack O'Regan at no. 11 on about 1/2 acre, with his wife Edna, his son Alan, and his Daughter Judith. Barney Meadows lived on about 1/2 acre at no. 13. Barney was an old widower, and his front garden had a huge palm tree in it. Next to Barney lived the Reeves at no. 15, and finally there was the McDonald family at no. 17, which is on the corner of Regina St. From then on, City Rd, was a bush block down to Greenwood Ave, and the bush continued up Greenwood Ave to the Williams house, one house block from Haig St. On the right hand side of City Road it was all paddock to Ireland St, and another paddock which ended at our house was over the other side of Ireland St. Both paddocks were developed in about 1961/62, and there are about 12 houses there now, plus the Lutheran Church. When we first moved there, there was a horse and a cow grazing in the paddock beside our house. For the first couple of years, there was a huge bonfire in "our" paddock to mark Guy Fawkes day. It was a lot of fun, although I concede that it might have been a tad dangerous, with 3d. bungers and all that! Next door to us at no. 16 was the Goessling family. From now on the house blocks were normal sized. The Goesslings had one baby girl who was about 9 months old when we first moved in, but they ended up with 4 kids, all of whom would be middle aged now. They were observant Lutherans, but they were there before the church. Next door to the Goesslings at no. 18 was the Weir family on the corner of Regina St. On the other side of Regina St. at no. 20 was the Gowland family, and the last house in the street at no. 22 was owned by Arthur Johnston and his family. Arthur was an Ambulance Driver. Of course, many other people moved in and moved out in all those years. There was one particularly bad week for the street in June 1969. My brother Peter was killed in a work accident on Saturday 7th June. The next Wednesday 11th June Ted O'Regan, who lived diagonally opposite us died. Then on the next Saturday the 14th June, Ted Bell, who lived next door to us at no. 12 died from a heart attack at the age of 47. Three deaths in one week was a bit too much. It was eerie! Our old house is still standing, but I doubt for much longer. It was bought by people who wanted to develop it. Their plans were knocked back, so they sold it again. I would bet that in the not too distant future the house will be a piece of history. City Road was a paradise for kids when we moved in. We had lived in the inner suburbs, so the space and freedom were amazing for us "city slickers." I don't know where you could move to now if you wanted to bring up your children in a similar environment. Somehow, I don't think it would be possible.

Written by Michael Anderson on RDHS Facebook on March 2016 CITY ROAD, RINGWOOD 1959 My family moved to City Road in 1959. At that time, it was a narrow rutted dirt road, with a large drain running on the northern side, and a wide nature strip complete with big wattle trees on the southern side, ideal for playing cricket and other games. There was no Salvation Army Citadel, nor was there a Lutheran Church. As you proceed from Wantirna Road towards Jubilee Park, there were no houses on the right hand side at all until you reached our house, 14 City Road, which at the time was Lot 51. On the corner where the Lutheran Church now stands, there was an old rusty farm gate, attached to a very weathered wooden post. This indicated that at some stage, City Road had been a private road. This rusty old gate was never closed, but it was a remnant of bygone days. Ireland St, Regina St, and Greenwood Avenue south of Haig Street were all narrow dirt roads as well. Jubilee Park Oval was fairly new, and there was no grandstand. The players and staff had to make do with a small wooden building that looked like a garden shed. Just beyond the southern end of the oval were growing many wild pumpkins, and I understand that the land had been a rubbish tip in the not so distant past. The park also had a couple of tennis courts. There was no road from Jubilee Park to Reilly St, and Reilly St didn't go all the way through from Wantirna Road to Great Ryrie St. It was broken by a creek. Aquinas College was an orchard. As you proceed up City Road from Wantirna Road, The Salvation Army church is on the left corner. The Hobbs family lived on that corner, in an old house on a block which was bordered by a huge hedge. The house next door in Wantirna Road, which is also Salvation Army land now, was owned by the Bayliss family. Mrs Bayliss was a teacher at Ringwood High. The first house in City Rd proper was at no. 1 to 5. The Roberts family lived there in an old weatherboard house on an acre of land. Mr Roberts was a carpenter who had built our house at No. 14, and he lived there with his wife and two sons, Graeme and Max. Eventually, they wanted more space, so they moved to the acre. Next door to the Roberts was Ted O'Regan at no. 7 to no. 9. He appears to have been a widower, and he lived by himself in an old wooden house which was surrounded by a large veranda on about 2/3 acre. Next door to Ted O'Regan lived his brother Jack O'Regan at no. 11 on about 1/2 acre, with his wife Edna, his son Alan, and his Daughter Judith. Barney Meadows lived on about 1/2 acre at no. 13. Barney was an old widower, and his front garden had a huge palm tree in it. Next to Barney lived the Reeves at no. 15, and finally there was the McDonald family at no. 17, which is on the corner of Regina St. From then on, City Rd, was a bush block down to Greenwood Ave, and the bush continued up Greenwood Ave to the Williams house, one house block from Haig St. On the right hand side of City Road it was all paddock to Ireland St, and another paddock which ended at our house was over the other side of Ireland St. Both paddocks were developed in about 1961/62, and there are about 12 houses there now, plus the Lutheran Church. When we first moved there, there was a horse and a cow grazing in the paddock beside our house. For the first couple of years, there was a huge bonfire in "our" paddock to mark Guy Fawkes day. It was a lot of fun, although I concede that it might have been a tad dangerous, with 3d. bungers and all that! Next door to us at no. 16 was the Goessling family. From now on the house blocks were normal sized. The Goesslings had one baby girl who was about 9 months old when we first moved in, but they ended up with 4 kids, all of whom would be middle aged now. They were observant Lutherans, but they were there before the church. Next door to the Goesslings at no. 18 was the Weir family on the corner of Regina St. On the other side of Regina St. at no. 20 was the Gowland family, and the last house in the street at no. 22 was owned by Arthur Johnston and his family. Arthur was an Ambulance Driver. Of course, many other people moved in and moved out in all those years. There was one particularly bad week for the street in June 1969. My brother Peter was killed in a work accident on Saturday 7th June. The next Wednesday 11th June Ted O'Regan, who lived diagonally opposite us died. Then on the next Saturday the 14th June, Ted Bell, who lived next door to us at no. 12 died from a heart attack at the age of 47. Three deaths in one week was a bit too much. It was eerie! Our old house is still standing, but I doubt for much longer. It was bought by people who wanted to develop it. Their plans were knocked back, so they sold it again. I would bet that in the not too distant future the house will be a piece of history. City Road was a paradise for kids when we moved in. We had lived in the inner suburbs, so the space and freedom were amazing for us "city slickers." I don't know where you could move to now if you wanted to bring up your children in a similar environment. Somehow, I don't think it would be possible.

This blazer was worn by Joyce Murphy at the Ballarat Teacher's College. David van Leeuwen decided not to have a blazer as he was older, and thought it too much like school days. He attended the Ballarat Teachers' College when 27 years, after serving in the army. Because he didn’t have a blazer he didn’t have anywhere to put the colours so he offered them to Joyce Murphy as they were going out together. There should have been a football embroidery as well, but Joyce Murphy didn’t want that on her blazer because it was too boyish. Joyce van Leeuwen remembers: 'Towards the end of our College year, were were given written authorisation denoting our sporting teams, to take to Paterson & Powell for embroidery on our blazer pockets. On my pocket, the hockey sticks, the BB for basketball, as netball was then called, all mine. The tennis racquet is David's [van Leeuwen], as is the braid topping the pocket denoting the College colours. College colours were authorised for excellence in a chosen sport, and in our year, 1950, only two men's colours were awarded - David's for basketball and Neil Trezise's for football. Dorothy Round in shorts English-born Dorothy Round (1909-1982) plays tennis at Albert Park Cricket Ground, wearing her signature white sleeveless dress with divided skirt, pleated to form loose shorts. Dorothy won Wimbledon in 1934 and 1937, and the Australian Open in 1935. In the early 1930s, many women players in Europe and USA swapped stockings and long skirts for bare legs, short skirts and shorts. In October 1933, Mr Harley Malcolm, Secretary of Lawn Tennis Association Australia (LTAA) declared, “I consider shorts not regulation costume and would stop both men and women, particularly women, wearing them. I think women’s desire to strut themselves in such a costume is unreasonable.” However by November, the Victorian Lawn Tennis Association (VLTA) officially allowed shorts at Kooyong for both sexes. At the July 1934 Wimbledon Women’s Final, played in front of the King and Queen, Dorothy wore a sleeveless dress with the skirt divided. Her American competitor, Helen Jacobs, wore white tailored shorts with a black stripe on either side, described as “mannish, though businesslike”. In October, Australian tennis player Mrs Nell Hopman warned, “When Miss Dorothy Round arrives in a few weeks’ time, the LTAA will have to reconsider its decision about women playing in dresses, as she is sure to bring a trunkful of shorts. Miss Round has a “shorts only” rule which I fancy she will stick to here. She is the most stylish player I saw abroad.” The papers also reported that “Mrs Hopman saw no “he girls” among tennis players in Europe. Even the almost universal rule for shorts did not make them look masculine.” Dorothy said, “I wear shorts because they do not get in the way as a frock does. Research by project volunteer, Fiona Collyer: Dorothy Round (1909-1982) was an English tennis champion from Dudley, Worcestershire. She won the Wimbledon Women’s Singles in 1934 and 1937. In 1935 she won the Australian Championships Women’s Singles in Melbourne. Dorothy won the Mixed Doubles at Wimbledon in 1934, 1935 and 1936. Dorothy was a staunch Methodist and taught Sunday School at Dudley Wesleyan Methodist Church throughout her career. She did not drink, smoke, dance or play tennis on Sundays and declined to compete in the 1933 French Open as tennis officials refused to comply to her scheduling preferences of No Sundays. During the Wightman Cup in New York when play was rained out on the Saturday, Dorothy refused to return on the Sunday. Officials reluctantly agreed to reschedule the clash for Monday, where she put in a sub par performance, prompting the New York Times to quip “Miss Round doesn’t play on Sundays, and doesn’t play particularly well on Mondays!”. British player Henry “Bunny” Austin was the first top male player to wear shorts at Centre Court Wimbledon in 1933, and his sister Joan Lycett nee Austin became the first female player to play without stockings on Centre Court, appearing with bare legs and ankle socks in 1931. In 1933 Mr Harley Malcolm, Secretary of the Lawn Tennis Association Australia (LTAA) and referee of big tournaments , said “the rules say regulation costume must be worn – I consider shorts are not regulation costume and would stop both men and women, particularly women, wearing them. I think women’s desire to strut themselves in such a costume is unreasonable.” (Herald 5/10/1933) However, by November 1933 the Victorian Lawn Tennis Assn officially allowed shorts as regulation dress at Kooyong for both sexes. One speaker suggested that as the majority of women were knock-kneed, the privilege of wearing shorts would not be taken up extensively by them. He added that women were not intended by nature to wear such garments. Another member mentioned that men were rather handsome objects and “works of art” and would carry off the short pants vogue nicely. (Sun Sydney 15/11/33) At the 1934 Wimbledon Singles Finals, playing in front of King George V and Queen Mary, Dorothy wore her signature outfit of sleeveless white dress with the skirt divided and pleated to form loose shorts and American Helen Jacobs wore white tailored shorts with a black stripe on either side described as “mannish, though business like.” In the lead up to Dorothy’s arrival in Australia to compete in the Australian Championship of 1935, there was much speculation written in the press about Dorothy’s preference for wearing shorts. Mrs Hopman brought back a couple of pleated pairs that tennis player and designer Mrs Fearnley-Whittingstall (nee Eileen Bennett) made popular and worn by most English players. “They are really quite radical for they look no more startling than a short, pleated skirt” she said. (Newcastle Sun 1/10/1934) Writing for the Sydney Morning Herald 6/12/34, Dorothy said ”I have heard that a photograph of a player wearing shorts was sent to the Queen for her approval and I understand that she said in reply “that they were very attractive”. The Queen is a frequent and interested visitor to Wimbledon so this story is most credible and possibly explains the lack of official opposition to shorts this year.” “I wear shorts because they do not get in the way as a frock does. You have probably noticed that mine are made in one piece and this avoids any tightness around the waist. I don’t know whether shorts have come to stay. They do not suit everybody and the majority of the men don’t like the women in them and this may help condemn the fashion. I really think the men dislike them because too many people who shorts obviously do not suit rushed to be in the fashion and the result was devastating. For my part, I hope that this comfortable fashion endures.” Dorothy’s doubles partner, English tennis champion Fred Perry, did not approve of shorts for men and was particularly perturbed at the idea of women wearing them. Fred always wore long, white flannel trousers and white collared polo shirt on the tennis court. In July 1935 Dorothy took up a post as a dress designer and sportswear design advisor at British outfitters Jaeger. She published two books – “Modern Lawn Tennis” in 1935 and ”Tennis for Girls” in 1938 – described as cheerful and sensible guides. In 1937, Dorothy married Dr Douglas Leigh Little at Dudley Wesleyan Methodist Church. Her wedding dress was designed by renowned fashion designer Teddy Tinling who specialised in designing tennis dresses. (Tinling designed the dress worn by Billie Jean King for the famous “Battle of the Sexes” tennis match against Bobby Riggs in 1973.) News reel co. Gaumont British News filmed the wedding, showing 10,000 people, mostly women, surging towards the couple, describing it as a riot, and quipping that Dorothy’s forehand was useful when cutting the wedding cake. The city of Dudley gifted the couple an antique walnut bedroom suite chosen by them. Dorothy and Douglas had a son, Ian, and a daughter, Patricia. She gave up competitive tennis to coach and write newspaper articles. In later life she took up golf. Dorothy died of cancer in 1982 aged 73. She was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame 1986. The photo was taken at 688 Whitehorse Road, Mont Albert. It is of George Lister Coop (b1937) and his sister Alison (b1945). This was the home of 3 generations of the Coop family: 1. Josephine and George Frank Coop (noted in Box Hill Rate Books for 1947-1954). 2. George Burton Coop (1906-1960) and his family. He was Assistant Chief Architect of Victoria in the Public Works Department (P.W.D.) George Burton Coop was born in c1906 in Williamstown, the son of Josephine Vistarini and George Frank Coop. He married Winifred Alice Trewartha in 1936 and they are listed in the electoral rolls at 688 Whitehorse Road in 1937. George died 3/4/1960, aged 54 years at Mont Albert; Alice died in 1980. 3. George Burton and Alice Coop had 2 children: The donor George Lister Coop informed that the wooden shed was a cubby house built upon a degraded tennis court. He recalled that in his youth there were many private tennis courts in the area made possible by the generous size of the blocks of land. George initially attended Chatham State School because his first home was the Spanish Mission style flats at 346 Whitehorse Road, opposite Brenbeal Street, Balwyn. When his grandparents died, the family moved to 688 Whitehorse Road and he then attended Mont Albert Central School. Alison being younger did not go to Chatham Primary. Swish is a fast paced game played on a table tennis table with an upright board instead of a net. Players hold a miniature cricket bat and use an audible ball that must go under the middle board and off the table to win a point. Players must use only their bat to keep the ball on the table, and not their body, and keep the ball moving along the surface of the table. A letter from Legatee Meldrum recalling memories about Legatee Stan Savige. It is addressed to Legatee Kemsley who was on the archive committee at the time. Legatee Meldrum was a dentist and Stan was a patient of his. During a visit there was a discussion that Meldrum could help convince Sir John Monash to be President of Legacy as he used to play tennis with his son-in-law. It goes on the recount how Sir John suggested the role to Harold Cohen. Part of what was written: 'I did speak to Sir John the next Sunday. He was very interested but said he just could not take the office because his hands were so full with Yallourn. He said "Don't worry, let me give you some advice. If ever you want a job - a good job - done go to a busy man." Later as I was leaving Sir John called me into his study and said "I took my own advice today and asked a very busy man to take on the job you asked me to do. You know Harold Cohen because you always sit at his table at the Club. Well I've told him I would like him to think about taking the Chairmanship. Now it's up to you. Arrange for Savige and others to meet him". Which I did. Being originally a 6th Brigader I knew nearly everyone interested and I had known Pip Powell for six years before the war. I did attend a committee meeting just before the first luncheon at Stan's invitation but had not formally joined.
