This is a program for the events held in the 1992 Glenelg Games. These were held annually and began in 1982. The activities in 1992 included swimming, softball, ballroom dancing, surfing, tennis, shearing, go carting and croquet. The Games are organized by the Glenelg Sports Assembly, a regional body with representatives of sporting clubs, local government and interested individuals. The Assembly aims to promote sport in the Glenelg Region and hosts and organizes a number of other activities as well as the annual Games. This program is of interest as it demonstrates the number and range of activities that were included in the Glenelg Games of 1992. This is a booklet of 12 stapled pages. It contains, photographs, a programme of events, a map of Warrnambool, a Chairman’s Message and advertisements. The printing material is in black, blue and yellow tonings. This is Issue No. 5 of "The Curlip". The magazine is a compilation of research from a trip by the Orbost & District Historical Society to Bete Bolong. The Bete Bolong Prisoner of War Camp was located on the south side of the Buchan - Orbost Rd. From November 1943 to November 1945, Italian prisoners of war were based at Bete Bolong, cultivating maize, peas, beans and other vegetables on local farms. Unlike other 'farming' prisoners of war, those at Bete Bolong did not live with the farming families, but at a Prisoner of War Control Centre on Crown land overlooking the Snowy River Flats. About fifty Italian prisoners lived at the centre, along with an Australian Military Force staff of approximately seven people. The prisoners were driven to and from the farms each day. Three of them apparently simply swam across the river to work. They worked a six day week, with Sundays off. Although they were provided with rations, both prisoners and staff maintained vegetable and flower gardens. They were also skilled at cooking 'anything' they could catch, and at making illegal "grappa". Very few of the Italians were experienced farm workers. Some of them used their skills to make things for the families they worked for; a cabinet-maker made furniture , a cobbler made shoes, etc. They interacted with the local community and, although they were not supposed to go within one kilometre of town, some were found at local dances on Saturday nights. As recreation the prisoners were allowed to walk along the road to the west of the camp. Local people from both sides of the river could hear them sing as they walked. The prisoners also helped to construct an 'ant bed' tennis court on a property adjacent to the centre. Although now overgrown, the site of the tennis court can still be discerned as a flat area above the site of the centre. The tennis racquet belonged to John Phillips who used it in the late 1950s / early 1960s. It was not a new racquet when Ihe started using it, but a pass-me-down from his father. He purchased his first new racquet in the mid 60s and gave this racquet to the Orbost Museum to go in the racquet press so that people would have an idea of what the item (press) was used for - to stop wooden framed racquets with gut strings from warping. John played tennis at Orbost Tennis Club from 1969-1981 - vice president 1971-77, president 1977-81, secretary of Orbost & District Tennis Association 1975-81. He is a Life Member of the Orbost Tennis Club (1980). John is also a Life Member of the Orbost & District Historical Society.This item is an example of an early piece of sports' equipment which was manufactured using different materials.A wooden tennis racquet with a reinforced cane handle. These are plans for alterations to the residence and surgery of Dr Angus in Koroit Street, Warrnambool (Birchwood). Dr William Roy Angus (1901-1970), after several years practising as a doctor in South Australia and northern Victoria, came to Warrnambool in 1939, purchasing the practice of Dr John Hunter Henderson (Birchwood). Dr Angus was a dominant figure in medical and community circles in Warrnambool for 30 years, becoming an important ophthalmologist in his later years. Birchwood, with its beautiful gardens, lawns and tennis court was suitable for entertaining and many distinguished people, including Vice-Regal personnel and representatives of the Red Cross stayed at the house. It was also a meeting place for representatives of the many organizations with which Dr Angus was associated (over 20 groups including the Good Neighbour Council, the Boys’ Club, the Food For Britain appeal, the Historical Society, Rostrum and the National Fitness Council). Birchwood or earlier buildings on the site was used as a residence/surgery by many doctors in Warrnambool, going back to the 1860s and Dr Angus and his family lived there from 1939 to 1967. In 1998 Birchwood was demolished and a new Warrnambool Police Station was built on the site. These plans are of interest as they show the 1939 alterations to the building known as Birchwood in Koroit Street Warrnambool. We have a good floor plan and a drawing of the front of the building so we know what it looked like in the late 1930s. Both Birchwood and Dr Angus are important in Warrnambool’s history. These are four sheets showing alterations for the residence of Dr Angus (Birchwood) in Koroit Street Warrnambool. One sheet shows the front of the house in colour drawn in ink and pencil and paint and there is a copy of this in black and white. The other drawing is of the plans for the house drawn in pencil and ink and with some red and blue colouring. This blazer was worn by Joyce Murphy at the Ballarat Teacher's College. David van Leeuwen decided not to have a blazer as he was older, and thought it too much like school days. He attended the Ballarat Teachers' College when 27 years, after serving in the army. Because he didn’t have a blazer he didn’t have anywhere to put the colours so he offered them to Joyce Murphy as they were going out together. There should have been a football embroidery as well, but Joyce Murphy didn’t want that on her blazer because it was too boyish. The pocket is a dual one. Joyce van Leeuwen remembers: 'Towards the end of our College year, were were given written authorisation denoting our sporting teams, to take to Paterson & Powell for embroidery on our blazer pockets. On my pocket, the hockey sticks, the BB for basketball, as netball was then called, all mine. The tennis racquet is David's [van Leeuwen], as is the braid topping the pocket denoting the College colours. College colours were authorised for excellence in a chosen sport, and in our year, 1950, only two men's colours were awarded - David's for basketball and Neil Trezise's for football. The photo was taken at 688 Whitehorse Road, Mont Albert. It is of George Lister Coop (b1937) and his sister Alison (b1945). This was the home of 3 generations of the Coop family: 1. Josephine and George Frank Coop (noted in Box Hill Rate Books for 1947-1954). 2. George Burton Coop (1906-1960) and his family. He was Assistant Chief Architect of Victoria in the Public Works Department (P.W.D.) George Burton Coop was born in c1906 in Williamstown, the son of Josephine Vistarini and George Frank Coop. He married Winifred Alice Trewartha in 1936 and they are listed in the electoral rolls at 688 Whitehorse Road in 1937. George died 3/4/1960, aged 54 years at Mont Albert; Alice died in 1980. 3. George Burton and Alice Coop had 2 children: The donor George Lister Coop informed that the wooden shed was a cubby house built upon a degraded tennis court. He recalled that in his youth there were many private tennis courts in the area made possible by the generous size of the blocks of land. George initially attended Chatham State School because his first home was the Spanish Mission style flats at 346 Whitehorse Road, opposite Brenbeal Street, Balwyn. When his grandparents died, the family moved to 688 Whitehorse Road and he then attended Mont Albert Central School. Alison being younger did not go to Chatham Primary. Players hold a miniature cricket bat and use an audible ball that must go under the middle board and off the table to win a point. Players must use only their bat to keep the ball on the table, and not their body, and keep the ball moving along the surface of the table. A letter from Legatee Meldrum recalling memories about Legatee Stan Savige. It is addressed to Legatee Kemsley who was on the archive committee at the time. Legatee Meldrum was a dentist and Stan was a patient of his. During a visit there was a discussion that Meldrum could help convince Sir John Monash to be President of Legacy as he used to play tennis with his son-in-law. It goes on the recount how Sir John suggested the role to Harold Cohen. Part of what was written: 'I did speak to Sir John the next Sunday. He was very interested but said he just could not take the office because his hands were so full with Yallourn. He said "Don't worry, let me give you some advice. If ever you want a job - a good job - done go to a busy man." Later as I was leaving Sir John called me into his study and said "I took my own advice today and asked a very busy man to take on the job you asked me to do. You know Harold Cohen because you always sit at his table at the Club. Well I've told him I would like him to think about taking the Chairmanship. Now it's up to you. Arrange for Savige and others to meet him". Which I did. Being originally a 6th Brigader I knew nearly everyone interested and I had known Pip Powell for six years before the war. I did attend a committee meeting just before the first luncheon at Stan's invitation but had not formally joined. BHS CollectionA Davis Tyre pump. A black metal cylinder four centimetres diameter and 48 centimetres long is attached to a metal plate four centimetres wide and 14 centimetres long. A one centimetre diameter, 50 centimetre long rubber hose is attached to the bottom of the cylinder has a metal fitting on the other end. The wooden handle on top of the cylinder is 17 centimetres long and three centimetres diameter, it has a one centimetre diameter, 44 centimetre long metal rood attached to the middle of it which goes into the cylinder and presumably has something on the end of it to push air through the rubber hose.
