At that time, it was a narrow rutted dirt road, with a large drain running on the northern side, and a wide nature strip complete with big wattle trees on the southern side, ideal for playing cricket and other games. There was no Salvation Army Citadel, nor was there a Lutheran Church. As you proceed from Wantirna Road towards Jubilee Park, there were no houses on the right hand side at all until you reached our house, 14 City Road, which at the time was Lot 51. On the corner where the Lutheran Church now stands, there was an old rusty farm gate, attached to a very weathered wooden post. This indicated that at some stage, City Road had been a private road. This rusty old gate was never closed, but it was a remnant of bygone days. Ireland St, Regina St, and Greenwood Avenue south of Haig Street were all narrow dirt roads as well. Jubilee Park Oval was fairly new, and there was no grandstand. The players and staff had to make do with a small wooden building that looked like a garden shed. Just beyond the southern end of the oval were growing many wild pumpkins, and I understand that the land had been a rubbish tip in the not so distant past. The park also had a couple of tennis courts. There was no road from Jubilee Park to Reilly St, and Reilly St didn't go all the way through from Wantirna Road to Great Ryrie St. It was broken by a creek. Aquinas College was an orchard. As you proceed up City Road from Wantirna Road, The Salvation Army church is on the left corner. The Hobbs family lived on that corner, in an old house on a block which was bordered by a huge hedge. The house next door in Wantirna Road, which is also Salvation Army land now, was owned by the Bayliss family. Mrs Bayliss was a teacher at Ringwood High. The first house in City Rd proper was at no. 1 to 5. The Roberts family lived there in an old weatherboard house on an acre of land. Mr Roberts was a carpenter who had built our house at No. 14, and he lived there with his wife and two sons, Graeme and Max. Eventually, they wanted more space, so they moved to the acre. Next door to the Roberts was Ted O'Regan at no. 7 to no. 9. He appears to have been a widower, and he lived by himself in an old wooden house which was surrounded by a large veranda on about 2/3 acre. Next door to Ted O'Regan lived his brother Jack O'Regan at no. 11 on about 1/2 acre, with his wife Edna, his son Alan, and his Daughter Judith. Barney Meadows lived on about 1/2 acre at no. 13. Barney was an old widower, and his front garden had a huge palm tree in it. Next to Barney lived the Reeves at no. 15, and finally there was the McDonald family at no. 17, which is on the corner of Regina St. From then on, City Rd, was a bush block down to Greenwood Ave, and the bush continued up Greenwood Ave to the Williams house, one house block from Haig St. On the right hand side of City Road it was all paddock to Ireland St, and another paddock which ended at our house was over the other side of Ireland St. Both paddocks were developed in about 1961/62, and there are about 12 houses there now, plus the Lutheran Church. When we first moved there, there was a horse and a cow grazing in the paddock beside our house. For the first couple of years, there was a huge bonfire in "our" paddock to mark Guy Fawkes day. It was a lot of fun, although I concede that it might have been a tad dangerous, with 3d. bungers and all that! Next door to us at no. 16 was the Goessling family. From now on the house blocks were normal sized. The Goesslings had one baby girl who was about 9 months old when we first moved in, but they ended up with 4 kids, all of whom would be middle aged now. They were observant Lutherans, but they were there before the church. Next door to the Goesslings at no. 18 was the Weir family on the corner of Regina St. On the other side of Regina St. at no. 20 was the Gowland family, and the last house in the street at no. 22 was owned by Arthur Johnston and his family. Arthur was an Ambulance Driver. Of course, many other people moved in and moved out in all those years. There was one particularly bad week for the street in June 1969. My brother Peter was killed in a work accident on Saturday 7th June. The next Wednesday 11th June Ted O'Regan, who lived diagonally opposite us died. Then on the next Saturday the 14th June, Ted Bell, who lived next door to us at no. 12 died from a heart attack at the age of 47. Three deaths in one week was a bit too much. It was eerie! Our old house is still standing, but I doubt for much longer. It was bought by people who wanted to develop it. Their plans were knocked back, so they sold it again. I would bet that in the not too distant future the house will be a piece of history. City Road was a paradise for kids when we moved in. We had lived in the inner suburbs, so the space and freedom were amazing for us "city slickers." I don't know where you could move to now if you wanted to bring up your children in a similar environment. Somehow, I don't think it would be possible. -

She taught between the years of 1927 until 1941, then again after the war from 1951 until final retirement in 1961. In fact she was so liked that her former pupils formed "The 2997 Club" , which met in her honour every year for a meal (and, of course, their guest of honour). 2997 was the RW SS number. In some of her letters about early life in RW, she recalls the RW Mail being produced and printed in a small wooden building in Adelaide St. [Adelaide St is officially no longer on the RW map but it went from the highway nearly to Mullum Creek, between Melbourne St and Warrandyte Road.^ In fact there is an unmarked 100 metres of road that is on the west side of Officeworks that ends in a roundabout at the bottom of Eastland carpark. I don't believe it is exactly in the same position as the old Adelaide Street but it pretty close. That would put the old Mail office in the vicinity of the Maroondah Council service centre in Eastland.] She also recalls that there were nearly a dam on every corner. In fact, I recall in my 1950s/60s childhood that there were still many dams around. As I previously mentioned, with the RW-Mitcham claybelt, there wasn't much top soil and the orange clay is very fine, so when the banks of the dam get wet, it wass very slippery. I often remember playing around in those dams, as most boys did in those days. A friend and I spied an old bath used to water some horses so after some trial and errors we made it waterproof and fashioned a couple of paddles out of wooden fence pailings. The first launch in the local dam was fine and we managed to manouver through the bullrushes into the middle. The only thing that I forgot about was that I had a d<^ that went everywhere with me and, rather than bark from the bank, he swam over to us and tried to get aboard. Bath tubs are not known for their seaworthness and he tipped us all in the drink. Of course the bath sank like a rock. We scrambled on the bank and he added insult to injury when, as all dogs do, gave the usual shake and sprayed us with water. My mind often comes back to one dam right next to the Croydon pub - that provided water to the Magg's orchard - dug in the usual fashion on about 3 metres deep scraped in the local clay, it was at this dam in the early sixties that a young boy drowned. After that we were pretty careful around dams. Going back to Daisy's memories, she recalls that the kids often started late on Monday mornings as Monday was Market Day at RW. They used to watch the stock being herded into the yards and people getting off the steam trains. Her family home was at Gruyere and her father used to drive to RW market and stop midway at the Burnt Bridge hotel and rest the horses. [I suspect that he may have watered other things besides the horses.] They eventually moved to RW in Thanet St. Miss Paddock still remembers the old RW school at the corner of RW St and Whitehorse Road, it was very small so they built the new school in Greenwood Ave. RW had a population of around 2,(K)0 when Daisy became an Assistant Class Five. She used to walk through the open paddocks, surrounded by bush and orchards. She goes on to say that the bush was alive with wildlife and a natural playground for the children. Miss Paddock was a member of the Soroptomist Club in RW (equivalent to Rotary), active in the church and local community. At our archives, we have a plaque that grac^ the entrance to the school, naming it the Miss Daisy Paddock library, in honour of a great woman in our city." -

The Chinese diaspora was global and many Chinese people came to Ballarat and the Victorian Goldfields. The work details some of the personal Chinese family memories of Ballarat from the goldrush forward. The 33 marble laser-etched panels include found images and texts mounted on a modernist metal architectural feature holding back a grassed hill landscape. Within the side walkway of gravel and composite stone is an etched of local activities relating to the Chinese community achievements that can be added to by the community.Open Monument is of aesthetic and historical significance to the people of BallaratArchitectural artwork consisting of large marble panels on a corten steel frame imbedded into a grassed mount.Inscription on plaque: Open Monument 無極紀念碑 / Artist: John Young / Officially Launched by Mr Yumin Song / Chinese Consul-General to Victoria / 6th September 2015 / Open Monument unearths stories of the Chinese diaspora in Ballarat, a name which means/ “resting place” to the traditional custodians - the Wadawurrung and Dja Dja Wurrung people./ The monument comprises of two artworks: Transculture, a granite-panelled work, evoking stories of alternative worldviews, / modernity, leisure and toil. Typewritten report at Ringwood Station South Eastern Police District by Henry Dawson, 1st Const. 7158 To the Mayor of Ringwood, Dear Sir, 1. On Sunday the 20/11/38. From information received from a caretaker of the lake situated in Whitehorse Road, Ringwood, I proceeded to the lake at 12:50pm. 2. I found four boys in bathing dress swimming in the lake near the trout fisher's landing stage. One enterprising lad was testing the life-buoy in the water. 3. The boys were: Ralph Loone aged 13 years, George Loone aged 14 years, Alfred Loone aged 10 years, all of Greenwood Avenue, Ringwood, and David Carvill aged 14 years of Pine Crescent, Boronia. The Loone family have only been in Ringwood about one week. They appeared to be of a respectable type. The day was exceptionally hot. 4. I informed the boys that they were not permitted to swim in the lake, and I explained to them how to get to the Ringwood baths. 5. Does the Council of the Borough of Ringwood desire that these lads be prosecuted? -

This one was issued to John Thomas Greenwood, who was born in 1898 in London, and emigrated to Australia in 1911, aged around thirteen. ...The 'Memorial Plaque', colloquially often known as the 'Dead Man's Penny' or the 'Widows Penny', is a bronze memorial plaque issued after World War I to the next-of-kin of British Empire service personnel killed in the war. Around 1.35 million were produced. They were treasured by some as a tangible memorial, while others thought that they did not reflect the magnitude of the loss that so many families suffered. Such was the depth of feeling that many were returned. This one was issued to John Thomas Greenwood, who was born in 1898 in London, and emigrated to Australia in 1911, aged around thirteen. He was a resident of Williamstown before he enlisted on 8 June 1917, and was assigned firstly to the 58th Battalion, 9th Reinforcement, and then was reassigned to the 39th Battalion. He boarded the HMAT 'Port Melbourne' for England on 16 July 1917. John’s father William Greenwood also joined up, on the same day as William. After training John was sent ‘on strength’ to France where he joined the 39th Battalion on 23 February 1918. They were about to fight the German ‘Spring Offensive’, the Germany’s last attempt at victory. Unfortunately, two months later John became seriously ill and subsequently died of TB and meningitis on the 12 April 1918, at the age of 20. A WW1 British Empire bronze memorial medal or plaque mounted on a timber shield. It features in relief a large depiction of Britannia, holding a triton and flanked by two small dolphins, with a lion in the foreground. The name of the deceased is in a rectangle. On the lower portion of the plaque is a depiction of a lion cub attacking an eagle.
