Penleigh Boyd, Robin and Patricia Boyd's son, writes “Prior to 1950 Robin, like most other amateur or hobby photographers, took black and white printed photographs. The oldest slides date from 1950 when Robin and Patricia travelled to Europe on Robin’s Robert Haddon Travelling Scholarship.” In 1948 Robin Boyd was awarded ‘joint first place’ in the Robert Haddon competition for his design of Mildura art gallery. The scholarship helped fund their first overseas trip. Robin and Patricia were passengers on the Greek ship “Cyrenia” departing in May 1950, passing through the Suez Canal and landing in Genoa five weeks later. For six months, they travelled extensively throughout Europe (predominantly driving themselves) - France, Italy, United Kingdom, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Spain.Colour slide in a mount. This piece of engraved rock in a velvet bag was presented to councillors of Sunshine City Council at the opening of the Highpoint West Shopping Centre in 1975. The item was presented to the Sunshine & District Historical Society by Mr Charles D. Skidmore, a former councillor of the City of Sunshine. This Victorian Anti-Aircraft and Searchlight Memorial is located at the Highpoint West Shopping Centre, Rosamond Road, Maribyrnong. This memorial plaque commemorates the site as the headquarters of the Anti-Aircraft Searchlight Companies that defended Melbourne during the Second World War. The speedway located on the Maribyrnong Reserve, Maribyrnong was built in 1946, on what had been an undeveloped football ground. The first public race held at the raceway was in October 1946, in front of approximately 7,000 spectators, and quickly became a major venue for solo motorcycles, sidecars, and midget speedcars. Soon after opening, the track was taken over by the Kirjon Speedway Company, and was renamed the Kirjon Speedway. Fred Tracey, a well known solo motorcycle racer and winner of the 1947 Victorian Solo Championship, took over the venue around 1951, renaming it Tracey’s Speedway. Tracey’s Speedway closed in 1963, ending nearly two decades of racing. This sculpture of Fred Tracey, in honour of his contribution to speedway racing, is located in the Highpoint City Shopping Centre, Rosamond Road, Maribyrnong. Maribyrnong was originally part of the former Shire of Braybrook and later the City of Sunshine. However, in 1994, Victoria underwent council amalgamations, which resulted in Braybrook being incorporated into the City of Maribyrnong. The suburb of Maribyrnong continues to attract considerable attention from the residents of City of Brimbank, particularly its historical features, the old buildings and distinctive streetscapes that characterise the area.Tracey’s Speedway in Maribyrnong was one of Melbourne’s most famous post‑war dirt tracks, opening in 1946 and operating under several names before becoming “Tracey’s Speedway” in the early 1950s under promoter and racer Fred Tracey. Miss Olive Codling was a Foundation Member and a Life Member of the Wodonga Historical Society. Many of her prize-winning photos are held in the Society Collection. She also held a range of roles and committee positions in a wide range of Wodonga community organisations. Pipemakers Park is an 8‑hectare urban park on the Maribyrnong River, near Highpoint, established in 1987 on the site of the former Hume Pipes Company manufacturing complex. The site has a long history of industrial use including, Raleigh’s Boiling‑Down Works (1848–1853), Melbourne Meat Preserving Company (1868–1886), Australian Frozen Meat Export Company (1880–1882) and Hume Pipe Company (1912–1978). The Melbourne & Metropolitan Board of Works purchased the site in 1978 for conversion to parkland and the Pipemakers Park officially opened in 1987–1988. One bluestone building was refurbished and leased to Melbourne’s Living Museum of the West. The park is now managed by the City of Maribyrnong (since 2014)Pipemakers Park is significant because it is one of the most complete surviving industrial heritage landscapes in Melbourne, a place where 130 years of Australian manufacturing, export innovation, and working‑class history are still physically visible in one location. Mate opened his first store in Albury in 1850. The company was sold to Burns Philp in 1946, although they continued trading as Mate’s. Burns Philp policy was to maintain the identity of stores they took over with the same staff and management. The Mate’s store in Wodonga was built by local builders A. B. and M. A. Chick in 1969. It was a 3 level development in High Street opposite Woodland Grove. It included a mezzanine eating area. Mate’s closed in 1976 when Burns Philp sold the business to Waltons. In 1987 they became Venture Stores. This building also later became Highpoint and Fosseys which closed in 2000.
