Bendigo Historical Society Inc.Document - Michele Matthews Collection: PHD Research - Requests for Support, Jan 2004
... She is an ardent advocate for the use of local history records to tell Victorian and Australian history from a grassroots perspective. ...She is an ardent advocate for the use of local history records to tell Victorian and Australian history from a grassroots perspective. ...Dr Michele Matthews has been a local and social historian for nearly three decades since she first used correspondence held by the then Bendigo City Council for her Honours thesis. She is an ardent advocate for the use of local history records to tell Victorian and Australian history from a grassroots perspective. Michele’s MA thesis, ‘A forgotten “Father” of Federation: Sir John Quick 1852‑1911’ (2003), and her PhD thesis, ‘Survivors, schemes, Samaritans and shareholders: the impact of the Great Depression on Bendigo and District 1925‑1935’ (2007), both drew heavily on Bendigo and district records. Michele Matthews Collection: PHD Research - Requests for support from older bendigo Residents This item includes the following documents: 8672.32a Letter outlining her PHD research and seeking input from older Bendigo Residents - Letter folder with sticky note attached 8672.32b The document is a letter written in January 2004 by Michele S. Matthews, a PhD student, inviting members of the Bendigo community to participate in her doctoral research. Her study focuses on the economic depressions of the 1890s and the 1930s in Bendigo and the surrounding district, with particular emphasis on understanding how these events affected the everyday lives of ordinary people. Matthews explains that, because the 1930s Depression occurred within living memory, she hopes to interview elderly residents who can recall the years 1929–1935. She outlines several criteria for participants, including being born between 1918 and 1925 (or earlier if they have clear memories), having lived in Bendigo or within a 50-kilometre radius during the Depression, and having parents who held a home or business loan with the Bendigo, Sandhurst, or Star Building Societies. To establish her credibility, Matthews describes herself as a Bendigo local and experienced historian who had worked in the field for approximately twenty years. She highlights her previous research on Bendigo’s contributions to Federation and Sir John Quick, as well as her employment as an in-house historian for both the Bendigo City Council and Bendigo Bank. She also notes her contributions to the Interpretive Centre and the Making a Nation exhibition. The letter concludes by stating that the history of the two depressions in Bendigo has never been thoroughly examined and that the memories of older residents would be invaluable to the project. Matthews encourages interested individuals to contact her by telephone, expressing her hope that their personal experiences will help preserve an important part of Bendigo’s history. 8672.32c The handwritten letter asks a newspaper or advertiser to help find interview participants for PhD research on Bendigo during the depressions of the 1890s and 1930s. The researcher wants to study how those periods affected ordinary people’s daily lives, especially because the 1930s Depression had not previously been examined in detail locally. Proposed interviewees should: Have been born roughly between 1918 and 1923. Have a clear memory of the period. Have lived in Bendigo, or within about 50 km, during the Depression. Have had parents who owned a home or business in areas including Bendigo, Sandhurst, or nearby districts. The writer also notes strong personal and professional ties to Bendigo, including years of residence, research on Sir John Quick, and work connected with the Bendigo City Council and Bendigo Bank. Marginal notes suggest revisions to the date range and wording before publication. 8672.32d Letter to the newspaper editor based on the above. 8672.32e The two page type written document is a PhD thesis proposal titled “How Depressing?: The Impact of the 1890s and Great Depressions on Bendigo and District.” It outlines a comparative historical study of how the economic depressions of the 1890s and the 1930s affected the Bendigo region, with a focus on their social, economic, and community impacts. The research seeks to determine whether the effects of the two depressions were similar or different, identify the factors that shaped those experiences, and explore what local people remembered about the 1930s Depression. 8672.32f The three page type-written document outlines a proposed thesis examining the social, economic, and political impacts of the Great Depression in Bendigo between 1925 and 1935. It is organised into nine chapters, each focusing on a different aspect of life during the Depression, with a particular emphasis on the role of the Bendigo Benevolent Asylum and the experiences of ordinary people. 8672.32g Photo of Floppy Disk 3.5 inches possibly an outline of Michele's PHD bendigo, michele matthews collection, ywca -

Because it is a scanned historical source, very little text can be extracted automatically, but the page images clearly show that it functions as a telephone or commercial directory for Bendigo and the surrounding district. The directory contains alphabetical listings of individuals and businesses, generally providing names, street addresses or localities, and telephone numbers where applicable. It covers Bendigo as well as numerous surrounding towns and communities, including places such as Benambra, Eaglehawk, Kangaroo Flat, Maiden Gully, White Hills, and many other regional localities. Throughout the directory are advertisements from a wide range of local businesses and organisations. These include insurance companies, banks, breweries, land agents, manufacturers, retailers, and other commercial enterprises that were operating in the region at the time. The advertisements provide valuable insight into the businesses and services available in Bendigo during the period in which the directory was published. Many pages also contain handwritten notes, coloured highlighting, underlining, and circled entries. These annotations suggest that the directory has been used as a working research document, with particular people, businesses, or addresses marked for reference or verification. The annotations add another layer of historical interest by indicating previous research activity within the directory. Overall, the document serves as a valuable historical resource for genealogical, local history, and community research. It provides a detailed snapshot of the Bendigo district's residents, businesses, and commercial activity at the time of publication, making it useful for tracing families, locating historical addresses, and studying the social and economic landscape of the region.bendigo, michele matthews collection, bendigo directory -

Michele Matthews Collection: PHD Research - Bendigo Soldiers' Memorial Opening Booklet This item includes the following document: 8672.36a The document is a commemorative booklet produced for the opening of the Bendigo Soldiers' Memorial Hall (later the Soldiers' Memorial Institute) on 15 November 1921. It celebrates the completion of the memorial building, honours the service and sacrifice of Bendigo soldiers in the First World War, and outlines the role of the Returned Soldiers' Association (RSA) and associated community organisations. The booklet also includes the opening ceremony programme, photographs of officials, a concert programme, and advertisements from local businesses supporting returned servicemen. The opening message explains that the Memorial Hall was built by the citizens of Bendigo as a permanent tribute to local soldiers who served in the Great War. More than simply a meeting place, it was intended as a lasting monument to the courage and sacrifice of those who fought and died, while also serving as a practical centre for returned servicemen. The building, erected at considerable public expense, was designed to stand as a reminder to future generations of the cost of freedom and the gratitude owed to those who served. The booklet describes the hall's extensive facilities, noting that its rooms were furnished through donations from patriotic organisations and comfort funds throughout Bendigo and Victoria. These included committee rooms, reading and writing rooms, billiard facilities, lounges, and a large public hall capable of seating approximately 500 people. Responsibility for maintaining and developing the building was entrusted to the Returned Sailors' and Soldiers' Imperial League of Australia (RSSILA), ensuring it remained a centre for veterans' welfare and community life. A detailed programme outlines the official opening ceremony. Events included the Governor of Victoria inspecting the guard of honour, speeches by civic and military leaders, the formal presentation of the hall keys, patriotic music performed by schoolchildren, and inspections of the building. The ceremony concluded with a band performance and afternoon tea, highlighting both the ceremonial significance of the occasion and the community's involvement in celebrating the new memorial. Several pages are devoted to the history and achievements of the Returned Soldiers' Association. Founded during the First World War to support wounded and returning servicemen, the Association expanded into a powerful advocacy organisation, helping veterans secure pensions, land settlement opportunities, employment, and other government entitlements. The booklet stresses that the League was non-political and non-sectarian, encouraging comradeship among former soldiers while protecting their interests and supporting their families. It also lists the office-bearers of the Bendigo branch and describes its ongoing welfare work. The publication also highlights the work of the Diggers' Business Association, established to promote businesses owned by returned servicemen and encourage the public to support them. Beyond commercial advocacy, the Association organised charitable fundraising events, concerts, exhibitions, and visits to returned soldiers' homes, demonstrating its commitment to both economic assistance and community service. The booklet praises its energetic leadership and encourages public support for its activities. In addition to historical information, the booklet contains photographs of prominent RSA officials and office-bearers, reflecting the leadership behind the memorial project and veterans' organisations in Bendigo. A programme for an evening concert performed by the Ballarat Diggers' Band illustrates the celebratory nature of the opening festivities, while numerous advertisements from local businesses—many owned by returned servicemen—show the strong connection between the memorial, the local economy, and post-war community rebuilding. Overall, the booklet serves both as a historical record of the opening of the Bendigo Soldiers' Memorial Hall and as a statement of the city's commitment to remembering the sacrifices of its servicemen. It reflects the broader post-war movement across Australia to create memorials that honoured the fallen while providing practical support, fellowship, and opportunities for returned soldiers as they reintegrated into civilian life.bendigo, michele matthews collection, rsl, soldiers' memorial institute
