Lt. Col. Author Alan Marshall lived at Eltham from 1955 to about 1981. Alan owned land at Research and often lived there in his caravan while he was writing. A story about this land is told by John Morrison in "The Writer and the Swagman", which appears in his book "Australian by Choice." Local people also remember Alan living in his caravan beside an old house occupied by his friend, artist Neil Douglas, which was situated on the site of the present-day Eltham College oval and owned by the Pelling family at that time. It is understood that the land owned by Alan Marshall was nearby in Cassells Road. Vivienne Turner of Eltham recalled that her family had a photo of Alan and his caravan at Research and a copy was provided to EDHS in 2003. The caravan was a Sunliner model. Sister Elizabeth Lindsey worked at the RVIB Nursery from it's inception in 1933. During this time, she took photographs of the children, whom she had care of, documenting their life at RVIB as well as the wartime displacement to Olinda when the army took over the St Kilda Road building. These 34 photographs were taken at Flag Day, an annual sports competition between the Army Survey Regiment and the School of Military Survey (SMS) at Latchford Barracks, Bonegilla in May 1990. The two RASvy units took turns each year to host the event. The day competition usually comprised basketball, cross country, golf, sailing, squash softball, tennis, touch football, tug-of-war and volleyball. The evening competition often included darts, carpet bowls, hookey, quoits and snooker. The Flag handover and speeches were held in SMS’s Café Slater recreation/morning tea area. It is not clear which RA Svy unit was the winner.This is a set of 34 photographs were taken at Flag Day, an annual sports competition between the Army Survey Regiment (ASR) and the School of Military Survey (SMS) at Latchford Barracks, Bonegilla in May 1990. There are more photographs available on colour negatives and 35mm positive proofs. The photo proofs were printed on photographic paper and are part of the Army Survey Regiment’s Collection. This is a set of four photographs of students and staff attending Initial Employment Training (IET) Photographic Technician and Subject 4 Sergeant (SUB4 SGT) courses held in Lithographic Squadron the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo on the 18th of September 1989 and September 1990. The photos were taken in Fortuna’s gardens and the Printing work areas. Although these photos are not annotated most personnel are positively identified. Photo features a model tram, No. 41, known as the Treasure Tram with a group of boys and men group at the rear of the tram. Boys are dressed in army or sailors uniforms. Men dressed in army uniform and one SEC conductor with conductors bag around shoulder. From original of another reproduction believed to be held by the Ballarat Historical Society.
