Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born on 2 August 1901. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. The "British Queen Hotel", in Bridge street, Bendigo was first licensed to Squire Barlow (1817-1882), a Lancashire man who came to Australia in 1853 with his two eldest sons, travelling on the "Goldfinder". His wife Mary (nee Taylor, 1814-1891) soon followed with the rest of their children. One more child was born in Sandhurst in 1856. Squire and Mary had married in 1838, "The British Queen" was taken over by John Crowe (1825-1882) some time after 1876. John had previously been the licesee of the Globe Hotel, also in Bridge Street. When John died in 1881, his son Robert Phillip Crowe (Phillip) transferred the licence to John Hope in 1882.Black and white photograph. Jane Hamilton applied for a licence for the Queen's Arms hotel in Quarry Hill in Dec. 1872. It also provided 8 rooms for boarding of gentlemen. Jane was the wife of James Hamilton jnr. who, until 1872, had been in partnership with his father, James snr. at Hamilton and Son, wholesale stationers and general merchants of Hargreaves St., Bendigo. At this time there was a conveyance five times a day between the Queen's Arms and the Shamrock hotel.A letter written to the Bendigo Advertiser by E.V. Gray; the letter was published on 09/06/1972. Bendigo Advertiser ''The way we were'' from 2000. Watering hole: the Queen's Arms Hotel was built by James Hamilton in Russell Street, Quarry Hill, in 1872 when Quarry Hill was sparsely populated. Within a year there was a regular omnibus service from this hotel to the centre of Sandhurst. A veranda was added later. The hotel architects were a mining engineer Robert Moffat, who spent three years in partnership with Joseph Brady in the early 1870s, meeting the needs of the mining industry. The photograph is taken from Booval Hill (Liebig Street north) and shows the fencing in that area with groups of people in the foreground posing for the photograph. The panorama covers Liebig Street and Raglan Parade and includes private houses, a windmill and three tanks, St. John's Church, St. Joseph's Church, Tattersalls Hotel and the Saleyards.This photograph provides us with historical information on a section of the Warrnambool township in 1887 and is a valuable resource for researchers.This is a black and white photograph in a brown wooden frame and enclosed in glass. Barkly Street is the main road into the business district of Ararat and has developed significantly since this image was taken. The postcard helps define the township in its early stages of colonialisation and reflects on the style of early architecture. The image is a photographic representation of wide streets, assorted businesses and buildings with a bicyclist and horse-drawn carriage in the background. The vantage point seems to be the balcony of Leopolds hotel. The photograph is taken from the balcony of Leopolds Hotel, as favoured by many photographers. This photograph features Barkly Street in Ararat during a busy day of business and commercial activity. The vehicles in this photograph enable an estimated date circa 1950's and the pedestrian traffic state of dress in the image suggest it was taken in the cooler months.Langi Morgala museum holds a succession of photos taken from this same vantage point, which allows a comparison of the main street of Ararat over 100 to 150 years. The growth and decline of businesses and perhaps government buildings can also be ascertained. Original Painting in Bendigo Art Gallery PAINTING WON'T HANG IN MESS BENDIGO intends to keep its big oil painting, "Gentlemen - the Queen," hanging in the Shamrock Hotel in Pall Mall. i The painting is on loan to the hotel from the Bendigo Art Gallery. And It's badly wanted at the officers' mess of the Royal Australian Artillery, 3rd Div., in Batman av., Melbourne. A formal application for It was made, In writing, to the Art Gallery by Brigadier W. Hall, commanding offlfncer. But Art Gallery members at their meeting yesterday said "No." Lending it or giving it away would "create a dan- gerous precedent for the Gallery," they decided. . "Any anyway," said Mr. W. Little, the Gallery's curator, "Brig. Hall has erred in thinking the men depicted in the painting are artillerymen. "They're offlfflcers In the Duke of Connaught's Light Infantry." But in Melbourne last night Brigadier Hall, keenly disappointed, said: VI have been told the picture was painted in the Royal Artil- lery mess at Woolwich, In England.
