A Research Strategies Workshop, held at Action House on the 23rd and 24th of February, 1979. An article covering the event was written by the Chairman of RAAV, Dr R Strang, titled "Affiliation of RAAV with AARF". The article appears on page 3 of the Vol. 12, March 1979 edition of RAAV's News Review. The text in the sub-heading is as follows: "One of the objectives in the constitution of R.A.A.V., is to seek affiliation with the A.A.R.F. This had the aim of providing in Australia a union of community organizations dedicated to the fight against ar-thritis." As well as meetings with the Australian Arthritis and Rheumatism Foundation (AARF), there were several meetings held over a period of four days, beginning on Friday the 23rd of February. The article states that the opening of the shop was "launched by the Lady Mayor of Malvern, Counsellor [sic] Morrow, who presented us with a cheque." "Artie", which began as a cartoon character in the shape of a rat, eventually became the official mascot of the Rheumatism and Arthritis Association (RAAV). In this photo, the Friends of Artie auxiliary group are depicted at their monthly coffee shop, which was held at the Hawthorn Town Hall. A cropped version of this photo appears on page 13 of the Vol 1 No 2, April 1984 issue of RAAV's quarterly newsletter, News Review. It is captioned: "Friends of Artie, from left, Margaret Cleve, Eileen Erving, Kathy Payne, Phoebe Cum-mings, Dot Mortensen and Maureen Meyers, at their monthly coffee shop." Due to the photo having been cropped, 'The Rheumatism and Arthritis Association' sign on the wall isn't visible in the published photo. According to the article accompanying the photo, the monthly coffee shop catered to the craft market and raised about $100 a month for RAAV. The article also provides a brief history of the creation of Artie, which was initially a cartoon character created by Helen Semmler, daughter of Cliff Semmler, an executive member of RAAV. The character, a research rat, became so popular that it was eventually turned into a mascot, with a costume created for RAAV member, Dot Mortensen. In late 2000, Arthritis Victoria (formerly the Rheumatism and Arthritis Association of Victoria) celebrated the 80th birthday of its founder, rheumatologist Dr Leslie Koadlow AO (1920-2006). On the 28th & 29th of July, 1978, a second "Living with Arthritis - Aids to Daily Living" exhibition was held at the Peter Fraser Memorial Hall in Barkly St, Footscray. The exhibition, (the first of which had been held at Brighton's St Andrew's Parish Hall in May), was an educational and fundraising event in support of the Rheumatism and Arthritis Association of Victoria (RAAV). A fashion parade was one of the activities offered as part of the event. In late 2000, Arthritis Victoria (formerly the Rheumatism and Arthritis Association of Victoria) celebrated the 80th birthday of its founder, rheumatologist Dr Leslie Koadlow AO (1920-2006). Around 90 people attended the celebratrions at AV's headquarters, including Dr Koadlow's family, colleagues, and friends. The 10th AGM of the Rheumatism and Arthritis Association of Victoria (RAAV) was held at the College of Nursing, Australia, on the 1st of August, 1978. In this photo, Executive Committee member, Frank Wyer, addresses members of the Association from the podium during the event. NB: The information on the inscription is incorrect.
