Between the 1950s and 1970s, road safety was redefined as a medical and social problem, rather than a moral and legal one. This was a time before seat belts. The Road Safety Colouring Competition was a free colouring competition for children, organised by Commonwealth Oil Refineries Ltd., started in August 1954 with the , aims of teaching road safety. There were 1,000 prizes, valued at £1,200. The winner would receive a £100 bursary and a free plane trip with one parent to Canberra to receive the prize from the Federal Minister for Transport, Senator.G. McLeay. This booklet is the one used by the children in Orbost in 1958. This booklet was designed to promote road safety awareness, with messages and activities specifically considered for children. Its aim was to teach road safety in a fun, but educational way. This item was an important educational tool. The shelter has a corrugated iron roof fixed to an angle iron roof frame. The roof, which extends in the form of a skillion over the pavement, is supported on three squared, chamfered timber posts at the rear and three cast iron reeded columns with round bases and Corinthian capitals at the front. (The columns are hollow and function as downpipes, with rainwater discharging from the verandah roof, through the columns and under the ground). The shelter has a rinceau pattern frieze along the road frontage with centrally placed shield motif (which does not contain a coat of arms). The side and rear panels are lined with ripple iron and the upper panel at the rear is lattice work. The waiting shelter is of historical significance for its association with the development of the suburban (electric) tram network which assisted the expansion of Melbourne as a suburban metropolis. It is also of historical significance for its connection with the Prahran & Malvern Tramways Trust. The Prahran & Malvern Tramways Trust (1907-1920) was the first municipal electric tramway in Melbourne, becoming the largest and most successful of all the municipal tramway trusts. Its services played a key role in facilitating suburban expansion and the development of the southern and eastern suburbs. The growth of tramways was one of the greatest municipal developments in Victoria during the first decade of the twentieth century. The waiting shelter is an important remnant of this period of Melbourne's transport history and a tangible reminder of the Prahran & Malvern Tramways Trust. The shelter indicates the extent of the Prahran & Malvern tram network. The waiting shelter at corner of Balaclava Road and Orrong Road, Caulfield is one of only three remaining tram shelters in Melbourne designed in the form of a verandah. The waiting shelter is of architectural significance for the distinctive design and construction which is unique to the Prahran & Malvern Tramway Trust tram network. The shelter was designed by notable Melbourne architect Leonard J. Flannagan (1864-1946). Flannagan was responsible for a number of buildings for the Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust including the early waiting shelter at the junction of Dandenong Road and Hawthorn Road, Caulfield, and sections of the tram depot at Malvern, and also designed a depot for the Hawthorn Tramways Trust. The waiting shelter, a conservative design influenced by Victorian architecture, is based on the Melbourne City Council late 19th century standard cast iron verandah. It is of significance as an intact example of the cast iron type shelter and for its detail, including Corinthian columns and a 'rinceau' pattern cast-iron frieze. The shelter is largely in keeping with the original design and retains its integrity. The cast iron waiting shelter is also of significance as an unusual example of early twentieth century street architecture. Mt Dandenong Road (CRB Road, New Road, Main Road) was begun in the early 1920s and completed c1926. This would be a very early photograph in the history of the road and shows a Jeeves coach travelling along the new road at the base of Farringdon Road in Kalorama. Ellis Jeeves established the coach sevice between Kalorama and Croydon in 1904. It originally travelled down the Old Coach Road. John Lundy-Clarke grew up in the Kalorama/Mt Dandenong area and later in life (1972-74) began to write a comprehensive history of the area working from an original settlement map in an effort to cover all areas.Black and white photograph looking down an unmade road showing a coach travelling along another unmade road at the bottom. The south elevation has bayed windows. Two storeyed hip roofed additions are sympathetic and attached on the north side and at the rear. Inside, the staircase and stained glasswork with initials "HM" and family coat of arms are important surviving elements. INTEGRITY: Good, timber outbuildings of an early date, mature and spacious front garden includes early palm trees. Alterations include reconstruction of facade verandah including tiled pavement and front door on east side. Interior has a high level of integrity. Phipps Coles, the timber hall attached to the original church, built during the interwar period and the present brick hall of 1933, designed by J.F. Snell. Its aesthetic value is derived from the extreme simplicity of the original church and the highly picturesque, eclectic, Arts and Crafts influenced character of the main church and hall. Its historical value rests in the early date of the original building and the manner in which the remaining buildings are representative of the principal period of settlement of the locality. The social significance derives from the use of the site as a place of worship since the commencement of the closer settlement of Carnegie from as early as 1886. From Glen Eira Heritage Management Plan 1996 by Andrew Ward: Since 1990, valuable historic houses to have been demolished include "Noris", later "Quethiock", and "Koala" (1875) at 34 Balaclava Road, "Urandaline", later Samford private hospital at 510 Glen Eira Road, and No. 9 Lempriere Avenue. Victorian Heritage Database H0704 FORMER UNION CHURCH 84-86 ORRONG ROAD ELSTERNWICK https://vhd.heritagecouncil.vic.gov.au/places/428 The Former Union Church, Elsternwick, designed by the architect George de Lacy Evans, and erected in 1889-90 is a building of historical and architectural significance for the following reasons:- (1) it is a rare and well- developed example of the early French Gothic manner as popularised through the muscular Victorian re-interpretation of English architect William Burgess, which in turn were derived from the publications of EE Viollet-le-Duc. Other Victorian cases of detailing derived from Viollet-le-Duc include Barwon Park (1868), the Presbyterian Church at Skipton (1871), the Bourke Street West Police Station by Bindley and Brittingham (PWD) dating from 1888-9 and the Lutheran Manse, East Melbourne by JAB Koch (1890). However, none of these buildings relates closely in form to the Union Church, Elsternwick. The only building which has been identified as closely comparable is The Bairnsdale Court House by AJ Macdonald (PWD) which dates from 1892. (2) the use of bright red brickwork is of significance, as the Former Union Church is believed to be only the second church building in Victoria to employ this material as a matter of conscious choice. Amongst red brick churches, it is thought to be preceded only by Reed, Henderson And Smart's Sacred Heart (1884), a Renaissance inspired design. (3) the building is believed to be a rare, possibly unique, surviving example of a church building erected for dual use by the Congregationalists and Baptists. Research provided by Stuart Tompkins Studio, Box Hill, into alternatives for median strip street lighting to be used in Burke Road, Kew. The photographers identified variants in different suburbs appropriate to Kew's needs.The series from which the photograph is drawn provides a snapshot by a commercial photographic studio of each named vicinity in 1965 as well as providing examples of public works infrastructure being commissioned by local government in the 1960s. The photos originally formed part of the Engineering Department's files in the City of Kew before being donated to the kew Historical Society.Electricity Supply Poles, Burke Road, Kew, 1965. This photograph of Burke Road, Kew was taken just north of Kilby and Doncaster Roads looking north. Stuart Tompkins Studio provided the photograph for the Kew City Council. In the photograph are a number of electricity supply poles that have been erected in the median strip, in addition to some new poles on each footpath. The nearest wooden pole is stated to be 13.5″ in diameter. The electricity poles in Burke Road required Kew Council to investigate comparable designs in other Melbourne municipalities.
