No date on item, about March or April 1976 as appealing for space to store The April 1976 issue of Fares Please! gives the proposed move date as 8 and 9 May 1976. This harvester, a 1908 AL Type Stripper Harvester was made in the H.V. McKay Factory, Yuille Street, Ballarat. After sitting for many years in a paddock and in poor condition, the harvester was donated to the Sunshine and District Historical Society. Due to the lack of storage, the Society made temporary storage arrangements at Mt Derrimut. In the 1990's the Society obtained a grant for its restoration. Once these works were completed, the harvester was then located in the foyer outside the Sunshine Library Hampshire Road Sunshine. When this library was demolished to make way for the new Brimbank Community and Civic Centre, the harvester was once again put into temporary storage at the Brimbank City Council Operations Centre, Stadium Drive, Keilor Park. Prior to the new Brimbank Community and Civic Centre building works being completed, the harvester went through some minor restoration works of cleaning, repairing a damaged panel and repainting. All this worked was carried out on site at the Brimbank City Council Operations Centre by Artist Robert Jackson. Once the new Brimbank Community and Civic Centre building works were completed in 2016, the harvester was installed in the building and it is now suspended in the main foyer of the building. On the 1st March, 1959, the first special train was organized by the Australian Railways Historical Society in conjunction with the Kanyana Festival Committee of Colac, Victoria. It proved so popular that additional trains were later organized. Temporarily in storage at Newport railway yards eight NBH excursion carriages were transferred to Colac which ran on the special trains until early-1962. A A.R.H.S. "Kanyana" special excursion locomotive G41, an NC guard's van and NBH excursion carriages at halts at Gellibrand while the fireman attends to the engine requirements (or 'ER' in railways' parlance). The passengers are milling outside the excursion carriages while two are talking to the driver. Houses are in the background. The photo encompasses what is present-day University Hill shopping complex and the Janefield Wetlands. Plenty Road is just visible to the left of the photo. Janefield was an area 18 km north-east of central Melbourne that is now part of Bundoora. In 1842 a flour mill, powered by the Plenty River, was built at Janefield, although the locality was not known by that name at that time. It seems that the name Springfield was used in the late 1840s, after a Springfield homestead, and this was changed to Janefield possibly upon the death of Jane Brock in 1847. She was the wife of James Brock, a local landowner and son of the purchaser of the flour mill. This photo is not strictly within the area of interest for EDHS but overlaps do occur at times with other Society’s interests through families and other associated connections. Eltham District Historical Society member (and Greensborough Historical Society member), Peter Van Eeken was undertaking research into this photo and approached the Local History Librarian at Yarra Plenty Regional Library to enquire about digitising the large print copy to facilitate research. Approaches were made to EDHS who had suitable facilities and were willing to accommodate and all parties agreed to add the image as part of their respective collections in partnership. Michael Lanigan, started work as a message boy at Mont Park when he left school at age 14. He worked his way up the system to become farm manager at Mont Park and Janefield Special School. He was one of the last people to drive a herd of cattle (in 1964) between the two locations along Plenty Road. He retired when the school closed around 1993. Mick pointed out the location of three remnant farm houses of the 1800s. The Brock House being the main one. Peter has been unable to find any photos of the Brock House, which what built in the late 1850s, severely burnt in the 1930s and demolished in the mid 1960s. The tree plantation along Plenty Road was established in 1930 and cut down in the mid 1980s. The Victorian Government established tree plantations at about 350 schools in the early 1930s. Briar Hill School had one but Peter is not sure about any other local schools having a tree plantation. Mick informed Peter that it was his job to remove the 14 acres of pine tree roots, after the trees were cut down (due to old age and an infestation of sap sucking insects). For Mick, this was an impossible job, so he arranged a contract, to house all the soil removed from works associated with the construction of the Greensborough Bypass, which needed temporary storage as it was too valuable, and would be great for use in road construction. The contract to store the soil was important to Mick, as the contract stipulated that when the soil was eventually removed, the tree roots had to be removed too. Which got rid of Mick's headache. Apparently, the huge mound of soil that covered the roots in the late 1980s could be seen from Briar Hill. Based on this, the photo is most likely to have been taken 1982 or 1983. The key to a final date is working out when the Board of Works Office opened but so far no information has come to light. (It was purchased by La Trobe University in 1991). The Office existed, or is hinted at, in the photo at the extreme north of the photo, opposite McKimmies Road, on the eastern side of Plenty Road. This "coffee" tin has by the "art deco" appearance its origins in the late 1950's to 1960's. This time period was one of accelerated growth both in the physical (housing) sense and the mental (new ideas and inventions) changes in "attitudes". These occurred more rapidly in cities but had its effects on the rural environment. The drinking of coffee was spurred on by easier distribution of imported food and drinks. Advertising by stronger radio links and then by television brought the variety of foods and drinks to semi isolated rural regions. The accessibility through greater information channels becoming available brought with it unbelievable ranges of goods and foodstuffs. Rural regions still relied on bulk supplies and relatively larger storage containers than those in cities. This "bulk" buying and storage "syndrome" was a lingering result of many years of "drought" periods when road transports met delays from flooded roadways in supplying population centres in the Kiewa Valley. The construction phases in building the SEC Vic Hydro electricity Scheme in the eastern sections of the Victorian Alps brought many changes to the quiet rural regions in the Kiewa Valley. Changes in population and social mores. The influx of a varied , mostly temporary, and "European flavoured cuisine" changes the "cuppa tea only" flavour to the have a "coffee break". The subliminal influence of the "American" films changed those children growing up in the post 1950s from the "English tea" to the "American coffee". This "Americanisation process has influenced not only rural Australia but also other areas throughout the world.This "insignificant" coffee tin is very significant as it demonstrates that the Kiewa Valley was becoming more accessible to reliable coffee supplies and general food items.The container was part of a "set" of containers that included tea, sugar,biscuits,flour, rice and other family condiments. This type of kitchen storage containers was brought about through changing patterns in tea and coffee useage and overall consumption. Household demands for faster "self help" cooking especially beveridges and the greater choice of kitchen "utensils" was brought on by easier access to products due to a lessening of the area's "isolation" by having a reliable (all weather) road system and an ever increasing population growth. The need for travelling goods/merchant supply caravans to service the area became a diminishing factor, as a result of the establishment of grocery stores in Tawonga and Mount Beauty in the supply of previously "hard to get" groceries. This transition was precipitated by the SEC Vic Hydro Scheme of the 1940's to 1960's which increased the valley's population level three fold.This cylindrical tin has a pull/push lid(for easy access to the contents). The container is labelled for "coffee" however it has no commercial manufacturer's label to establish that it was bought with coffee ingredients in it. The majority of the container's external surface has a "metallic" light blue colour with two sets of silver rings confining black (horizontal spotted) rectangles. The Bendigo Benevolent Home was founded in 1857, with the main building inaugurated on March 15, 1860. The original site was chosen to avoid mining areas and was granted by the government. Early temporary premises were used before the current site in Barnard Street was established. The original building was designed by architect Robert A. Love, with construction by contractor Crawford and Clerk of Works Rigley. The structure features a basement (kitchen, storage, cellars, staff apartments), a first floor (large dining room, additional rooms), and upper floors (dormitories). The building uses the arch principle and includes hot air heating, lavatories, and good ventilation. A significant memorial stone of Harcourt granite was laid in December 1872, forming part of the building's front elevation. Additions and modifications were made over time, including a west wing in 1868 to house 50 girls, and further expansions by architects Vahland & Getchmann. The central block has seen little external alteration since completion, except for a small glassed-in wind shield.The Porter's Lodge and Superintendent's Residence remain in good condition.Some ancillary buildings have been modified or are at risk of demolition due to new construction.Typed History of the hospital, and letters regarding classification status and two A4 sized photos of the front of the building. From the Victorian Heritage Register statement of significance H0791 The Marmalake/Murtoa Grain Store, originally the No.1 Murtoa Shed, is located within the Murtoa Grain Terminal, adjacent to the grain elevator tower and railway line. The shed is 280m long, 60m wide and 19m high at the ridge with a capacity of 3.4 million bushels. The hipped corrugated iron roof of the shed is supported on approximately 600 unmilled hardwood poles set in a concrete slab floor and braced with iron tie rods. These poles are the reason for use of the term "stick shed". With its vast gabled interior and the long rows of poles the space has been likened to the nave of a cathedral. An elevator at one end took wheat from railway trucks to ridge level where it was distributed by conveyor along the length of the shed, creating a huge single mound of grain. Braced internal timber bulkheads on either side took the lateral thrust of the wheat, and conveyors at ground level outside the bulkheads took wheat back to the elevator for transport elsewhere. Wheat had been handled in jute bags from the start of the Victorian wheat industry in the mid nineteenth century. Bulk storage had been developed in North America from the early 1900s. NSW began building substantial concrete silos from 1920-21. In Western Australia, farmers' co-operatives, who had to supply their own bulk storage from 1934-5, pioneered the use of low-cost horizontal sheds of timber and corrugated iron for bulk storage. Following its establishment in 1935 the Victorian Grain Elevators Board (GEB) planned a network of 160 concrete silos in country locations, connected by rail to the shipping terminal at Geelong. By the outbreak of the Second World War there was a worldwide glut of wheat, and Australia soon had a massive surplus which it was unable to export. Only 48 silos had been established under the Victorian Silo Scheme so far, and wartime material and labour restrictions prevented progress with this scheme. The storage deficit had become an emergency by 1941 as Britain obtained its imports from North America, rather than over the lengthy and difficult shipping route from Australia. In 1941 the GEB, under chairman and general manager Harold Glowrey, proposed large temporary versions of the horizontal bulk storage sheds already in use in Western Australia. The proposal was approved by the Victorian Wheat and Woolgrowers Association, who considered the use of shed storages as a longer term proposition. After initial resistance from the Australian Wheat Board, some of whose members represented wheat bagging interests, the Commonwealth and Victorian governments agreed to split the costs, and Murtoa was chosen as a suitable site for the first emergency storage. The main contractor, Green Bros, commenced work on the No.1 Murtoa Shed in September 1941, deliveries of bulk wheat began in January 1942, and the store was full by June of the same year. In the following years the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (later CSIRO) conducted valuable research and experiment on the impacts and control of insect pests at the Murtoa No.1 shed. With these discoveries, and the development of more effective pesticides, use of the No.1 shed and the larger No.2 shed, erected in 1942/43, continued for many years. The No.2 shed was demolished in 1975. By the 1990s, pest resistance to pesticides and requirements for both pest free and insecticide free grain rendered open storage of this type unviable. This booklet is a catalogue of most of the works of art that were displayed in an exhibition in the Warrnambool Art Gallery in 1994. It was described as ‘a celebration of artists committed to living and working in country Victoria’. It was intended to be the first of similar exhibitions and was initiated by the Warrnambool-based Cultural Association of the South Coast and Western Plains. The Warrnambool Art Gallery was officially opened in 1886 though the local Mechanics’ Institute and Museum had been collecting works of art before this date. When the Mechanics’ Institute building was taken over for Council use in 1963 the Art Gallery ceased to exist and the works put in storage. The Gallery re-opened in temporary premises in 1971 and the present Warrnambool Art Gallery, a memorial to Fletcher Jones, was opened in 1986 in Liebig Street. This is an interesting catalogue as it is one of the few examples we have of the work of the Cultural Association of the South Coast and Western Plains. This Warrnambool-based group operated for a short time only in the 1990s.This is a soft cover booklet of 40 pages. It is bound with metal staples. It has a white cover with black printing and reproductions of black and white works of art on the front and back covers. In 1996 it received a more correct Canadian red livery. This “temporary” trial livery has now given way to 14A’s designated livery of all-over black.
