These medals were given to school children in Victoria in 1954 as a memento of the visit to Australia of Queen Elizabeth 11 and the Duke of Edinburgh. This was the first visit to Australia of a reigning British monarch. The tour took in 57 Australian towns and cities, including ten days in Victoria. These medals have no known local provenance but are retained for display purposes..1 A circular bronze-coloured medal with the image of Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh and printing on one side and a crown and printing on the other side. A bar with a decorative scroll on the top portion with printing is attached to the medal by a metal ring. This is a typewritten account of the history of Port Fairy from 1810 to 1890. It was written by William Earle (1850 -1902). In an addenda at the back of this folder there is a note from William Earle which indicates that the booklet was written in 1896 ‘as a result of a prize offered by several residents in a Schedule issued in connection with a local Industrial Exhibition, which Prize it secured’. Does this refer to the 1896-7 Warrnambool Industrial and Art Exhibition? No evidence of this has yet been found. As this folder was given to the ShipLovers Society of Victoria Library in 1963, some ten years before Earle’s history was reprinted in 1973, it is an early copy of Earle’s original work and may have been produced in the late 19th century or early 20th century. The original material was first published by the Port Fairy Gazette in 1896.This folder is of great interest as it is an early copy of Earle’s History of Port Fairy, an important historical publication. This is a black cardboard folder containing 120 typewritten foolscap pages about the history of Port Fairy 1810-1890 (written by William Earle). Inside the front cover there is a stamp of the ShipLovers Society of Victoria Library. The front cover has a sheet of white paper stuck on with adhesive tape. It has a black and white sketch of an anchor, a sailing ship and a rope. The pages are attached to the folder with four metal studs. This medallion was awarded by the Commissioners of the Warrnambool Industrial & Art Exhibition to ten boys from the Kew Asylum who sent handmade items (basketware, matwork etc ) for display at the Education Court of the Exhibition. The Warrnambool Industrial & Art Exhibition, held in Warrnambool from December 1896 to March 1897, partly to commemorate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, was a signal event in Warrnambool's history, with one report suggesting that over 70,000 people attended the various activities held over these months. These included concerts, operas, displays, business stands, sporting events and competitions. The earliest surviving voice recordings made in Australia were produced in Warrnambool at this Exhibition and there were various other 'firsts'. The medallion awarded to the boys at the Asylum for the high quality of their work, was made by the Melboune firm of Stokes and Sons who had a stall and machinery at the Exhibition and made small souvenir Exhibition coins on the spot for visitors to buy. As well as the gold medallion the boys were also given by the Commissioners some small souvenirs to the total value of 12 shillings. This medallion is of great historical value as it is a precious and rare memento of the 1896-7 Warrnambool Industrial & Art Exhibition, an important event in Warrnambool's history..1 A round gilt-bronze medallion with a bust image of Queen Victoria and lettering on one side and a laurel wreath and lettering on the other side .2 A square black box with a metal hinge and clasp. The inside is lined with dark blue satin and silk and has a sunken area to hold a medallion. This is a collection of sixteen tourist guides dating from the mid 1970's to 2013. These contain listings of businesses, accommodation, eateries and events in Warrnambool and district. They also include maps of Warrnambool and surrounds, advertising and photographs of various attractions. While mainly covering Warrnambool a small number of the guides cover the South West Region. The essay pasted into this booklet was originally produced in a newspaper (name unknown). The original essay was written by Cornelius (Con) O’Mahony and in 1883 it won the Bowen Prize Essay Competition for the best essay written by a student or past student of the University of Melbourne. The Bowen Prize was established in 1874 by the Governor of Victoria, Sir George Bowen, and was awarded annually thereafter. It is still awarded today. Con O’Mahony was a lawyer in Kepler Street, Warrnambool from the 1880s to 1920, initially in partnership with E.W. Klingender and later operating under the name of O’Mahony and Murray. He was born in Bendigo in 1863 and studied at Melbourne University in the early 1880s. O’Mahony received a set of ten books, Lives of the Chancellors, for winning the Bowen Prize and this set of books is in the collection of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society today. This essay, although only a typed copy, is important because it is a prime example of the 19th century positive writings on the need for Federation in Australia and so it played its part in promoting the cause of the Federation movement. It was written 17 years before Federation came into being by Con O’Mahony, a person who also played a part in Warrnambool’s history as a prominent lawyer in the town for over 30 years. This is a soft cover booklet of 24 pages. The cover is brown with black print and has handwritten material written over the original printing on the front cover. The booklet, originally an insurance booklet, has a stamp and typed material (a Federation essay) cut out and pasted onto 17 of the original pages. The booklet was originally stapled but the staples have been removed. The cover is partly torn and detached from the pages. This is a soft cover book of 340 pages. It has a grey cover with a black and white sketch of a house on the front and a black and white photograph of a house on the back. These plaques were once on display at the Warrnambool racecourse with the smaller one originally affixed to a seat. These plaques commemorate the winner of the Grand Annual Steeplechase in Warrnambool in 1931. The Warrnambool Grand Annual Steeplechase was first held in June 1872. Today it is part of the Warrnambool May Racing Carnival and is run over 5,500 metres with 32 fences. In 1931 Welcome Stranger's jockey was D. Wraight. The name "Welcome Stranger" is an echo of the name of the famous gold nugget found in Victoria in the 1850's. This badge belonged to a member of the Peters Pals Club, a group established by the Peters Ice Cream business in 1947 and centred around radio stations in Victoria, in this case, 3YB in Warrnambool. Peters Ice Cream was established in Sydney in 1907 by an American Fred Peters. By 1927 the factory and business had its headquarters in Melbourne and continues there today. The Peters Pals club was associated with a radio program by the same name, a variety show that featured quizzes, talent quests, interviews etc. The Peters Pals club was very popular and had over 250,000 members in the 1950s. The radio show was replaced by another Peters Ice Cream- sponsored show on television in the late 1950s and this show ran for several years. This badge is of interest as it has been issued by a local Warrnambool radio station and is a memento of a popular club in Victoria that existed for about ten years over 70 years ago. This is a round metal badge with a pale yellow background and green lettering. The back of the badge has a metal clip for attachment to a lapel or other item of clothing. This booklet was collated and printed for the 2014 Lake Bolac Eel Festival, ‘Return to Country’. The author, Peter Bakker, has spent several years researching the part played by south western Victorian aborigines and this booklet details the results of this research. A shock of different voltages was delivered to a person using the two metal handles or two heavy soft wire combs (missing but known of) were moved across the skin. Perhaps this was an early TENS Unit. The unit came to the donor's grandfather (Roy F. Leibig - Chief Electrical Inspector of the Brunswick (Melbourne) Electric Supply) for repair and returned to his keeping once it had become obsolete (upgraded by newer machine). Donor often helped his Pa repair electrical equipment.Historical: The Resuscitator or Electric Therapy Unit was used in hospitals, possibly Mental hospitals. Provenance: The donor worked at Mt Beauty in the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme with the State Electric Commission of Victoria as an electrician. Black wooden smooth box with clip fastener which is screwed on - 3 screws for the base and 2 for the lid. On top of the box is a leather strap for the handle fastened by steel screwed into the box. Inside: A mask with attached strap. Tap fitting loosely into steel box. Metal cylinders and a Cardboard box. The Bogong United Church began in Bogong Village under a non-resident Methodist in the year 1946 as a measure of convenience. The book was produced for a day of celebration to mark the 10th anniversary of the Church. In 1956 the Bogong United Church met for worship in Bogong, Mongan's Bridge, Mt Beauty and Tawonga and for Fellowship & Service there were 7 different groups mostly meeting in Mt Beauty. Minister at the time was Rev. John Goodluck, resident at 18 Kiewa Crescent, Mt Beauty.The Bogong United Church celebrated 10 years of co-operation with the Methodist and Presbyterian churches and was one of the first churches to do so. It is also significant because it also states the problems the church is facing in 1956: "Dependency on outside support. Inadequacy in state school visits. Extension on Fellowship visitation. Unity with other United Churches. "Let's keep Christmas" campaign and Representation at national convention". The information on this card is of interest to researches / students studying religion. This Cat No 5880P and the following ten Cat No's to 5890P were part of the original GRINTON PHOTOGRAPHS exhibition in 2008. Each frame follows a story from the 'War to Home' at Tragowel near Kerang, Victoria. The Grinton Collection was a large negative collection found in a tin at Myers Flat and developed from there. Frame 1. 1. Jack Grinton in full marching order. This appears to have been taken after Jack came back from being wounded the 2nd time on 31/9/1918 in the push into the Hindenburgh Line. He was away 3 months with his wounds and rejoined his unit at Visme-au-Val on 11/1/1919, a small village near Abbeville, France. he is wearing his two "Empire Wounded Stripes" on his arm. It is believed he took this photo to show what a fully kitted out digger looked like. 2. Full kit lid out, right down to a tooth brush. It is also believed this was taken to go with the above photo. Note the protective cover on the rifle trigger and magazine area. 3. Mess parade line up. The handwritten names on the reverse of this postcard - Kevin Hogan, Gwen Asling, Kevin Teasdale, and Chris Britton - are all individuals associated with the museum (to varying degrees), seemingly confirming their assessment that this postcard is mistitled and its image is not in fact of Emerald. They were likely correct, indicating that Rose Stereography may have made a mistake. It is difficult to determine how unusual this was; Rose made more than ten thousand postcards, so it is entirely possible some were not checked sufficiently. The reference number P. 1629 was reused at least two more times.While the image on this postcard may not actually be of Emerald, the fact that it is mislabeled as such still tells us about the perception of Emerald at the time of publication - that of a growing rural town amidst hills and trees.This postcard displays a sepia photograph with agricultural space - a field, fences, and trees - in the foreground, and a collection of buildings on a road rising on a hill in the background. The Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education was established by an Order-in-Council in September 1968. The Council of the Institute included members of the Gippsland community who are prominent in local government, industry, commerce, education and the professions, the Director of the Institute, and representatives of the academic staff, students, and graduates. On its establishment, the institute assumed responsibility for the diploma courses previously offered by the Yallourn Technical College which had commenced diploma teaching in 1929. Initially, all the Institute's teaching was conducted in the diploma building of the Yallourn Technical College. In 1972 the Institute transferred part of its operations to the first of its permanent buildings on a large campus in rural surrounds near the township of Churchill, ten kilometres south of MOrwell and one hundred and sixty kilometres east of Melbourne. Lisa Lodge Girls' Hostel, Ballarat, was established in 1970 and was run by a committee of women. All the women were Honorary Probation Officers. It provided residential care for eight adolescent girls at a time. Lisa Lodge was located in a number of different properties around Ballarat. The Hostel closed in 1994. Some time after this, Hayeslee House (another home in Ballarat, run by the same committee) became known as Lisa Lodge. This Committee managed a number of institutions in the Ballarat region. Another institution to start in 1994 was Berry Street Incorporated that amalgamated with Sutherland Child, Youth and Family Services. In 2009 Berry Street was the largest independent child and family welfare organisation in Victoria. In 2012 Lisa Lodge merged with Berry Street to strengthen Berry Street's services provided in the Grampians Region of Victoria. This research paper explores the first ten years of Lisa Lodge. Of note is Lisa Lodge was set up by a group of women for a group of women. It depended on donations to continue operating. Data was collected through interviews and analysing minutes of meetings. Correspondence and newspaper clipping were also used. This is a historical report so there are no recommendations. Before proceeding with this project, Beverlee Leith had to seek approval from the Human Research Ethics Committee, University of Ballarat.
