Johann George Schaefer had been in the employ of the Victoria Consols Mine for fifty years at the time of his death in 1914. For twenty nine of those years, he held the position of Manager and Battery Manager. He was the brother of Mattaeus Schaefer, who made the model of the horse and spring cart.Black timber frame, decorative inner edging with dark grey matt enclosing an address given to Mrs. Schaefer by the Victoria Consols Mining Co., N.L. Bendigo, on the occasion of the death of her husband, Mr. Johann George Schaefer. Carl Roeder was a highly respected figure in the Bendigo mining community, serving 27 years as a manager in the region. Roeder was part of a wave of experienced German miners who migrated to the Bendigo goldfields, and settled in the Bendigo area (then Sandhurst) in 1862 .The Victoria Consols Mining Company was one of the major players on the famous Garden Gully line of reef, one of the richest gold-producing areas in the world. Beyond mine management, Roeder served as Chair of the Board of the VC mining company. The Artist is F. de Kock (Frederic de Kock) and was a known artist and lithographer in Sandhurst during the 1880s and was often commissioned for these high-end, bespoke illuminated addresses.Illuminated address presented to Carl Roeder. Bailing carried out at Lansell's 180, Lazarus, New Chum Consolidated and New Chum Railway Mines. Cost of bailing about 200 pound per week and the Government is contributing half. The balance is being found from the Victoria Quartz, Victoria Consols, Ironbark, Hercules and Energetic and Lansell's Estate. Expenditure over 6 weeks has amounted to over 1200 pounds. Handwritten notes from a Bendigo Advertiser report 7 Jan 1907. Three shifts of men working all Saturday and Sunday had not located the main. A large are of Eaglehawk and the City are without water. Had to timber a hole to a depth of 25 ft. Victoria Quartz, Windmill Hill, Needle, Confidence Ext'd, Princess Dagmar, Golden Age, Golden Pyke, Macduff, constellation, Gt Northern, (partly), Specimen Hill, Clarence, New Argus, Comet, Gt Central Victoria and Victoria Consols had to close because they had no water and five to six hundred men believed to be out of work. City Council will put water-carts on and supply residents free of charge. The model of the horse and spring cart was made by Mattaeus (Martin) Schaefer. Martin was awarded a Silver Medal for the model at the Bendigo Juvenile Exhibition in April 1879. At the Melbourne Intercolonial Juvenile Industrial Exhibition, 1880, Martin was awarded a gold medal for the 'woodwork of model spring cart' (Bendigo Advertiser 6 March 1880). In 1882, he was awarded a first prize for the cart at the Grand National Show, Bendigo. 1885: first prize County of Bendigo Agricultural and Horticultural Society Spring Show. In 1883, Schafer (sic) was a member of the Bendigo Coachbuilders' Association ( Bendigo Advertiser, 'Bendigo Coachbuilders Association', Saturday 9 June, page 3 ) Martin died in 1900, at the age of 40, from pneumonia. His obituary reads: 'Death of Mr. M. Schaefer. After an illness of a few days, Mr. Martin Schaefer, coachbuilder and son of the late Mr. Peter Schaefer of Ironbark, died early on Wednesday morning. The cause of death was pneumonia, supervening on a cold which he contracted about Saturday last. He was 40 years of age and unmarried. He leaves three brothers one of whom is the Manager of the Victoria Consols Mine and another is Mr. Peter Schaefer of the Bendigo Post Office. The funeral took place yesterday, the remains being interred at the Bendigo Cemetery. The Rev. Mr. Leypoldt officiated at the graveside and the mortuary arrangements were carried out by Mr. W.H. The model of the horse and spring cart was made by Mattaeus (Martin) Schaefer. Martin was awarded a Silver Medal for the model at the Bendigo Juvenile Exhibition in April 1879. At the Melbourne Intercolonial Juvenile Industrial Exhibition, 1880, Martin was awarded a gold medal for the 'woodwork of model spring cart' (Bendigo Advertiser 6 March 1880). In 1882, he was awarded a first prize for the cart at the Grand National Show, Bendigo. 1885: first prize County of Bendigo Agricultural and Horticultural Society Spring Show. In 1883, Schafer (sic) was a member of the Bendigo Coachbuilders' Association ( Bendigo Advertiser, 'Bendigo Coachbuilders Association', Saturday 9 June, page 3 ) Martin died in 1900, at the age of 40, from pneumonia. His obituary reads: 'Death of Mr. M. Schaefer. After an illness of a few days, Mr. Martin Schaefer, coachbuilder and son of the late Mr. Peter Schaefer of Ironbark, died early on Wednesday morning. The cause of death was pneumonia, supervening on a cold which he contracted about Saturday last. He was 40 years of age and unmarried. He leaves three brothers one of whom is the Manager of the Victoria Consols Mine and another is Mr. Peter Schaefer of the Bendigo Post Office. The funeral took place yesterday, the remains being interred at the Bendigo Cemetery. The Rev. Mr. Leypoldt officiated at the graveside and the mortuary arrangements were carried out by Mr. W.H. Oakley' Bendigo Independent, Saturday 17 November, page 4. Model of horse and spring cart in a wooden display case, made by Matthaeus (Martin) Schaefer. The wooden horse is cream with black hooves and a dark cream horse hair tail. Horse is carved from wood; harness made from fine leather with buckles and embellishments made from metal. Spring cart model is made from wood and metal with the shafts extended forwards alongside the horse. Inside the body of the cart is a bench seat, upholstered in leather. The cart is secured in place in the display case by wooden block restraints placed either side of the wheels.
