Fourteen newspaper cuttings from the Bendigo Advertiser dated 18/8/1948, 31/3/1952, 3/6/1957, 11/2/1958 and 12/9/1958. Some cuttings have no dates. Most of the cuttings refer to the R.S.L. 'Whitehall' Cenotaph in Charing Cross. It was the idea of Colonel Sir George Lansell who approached Lady Emily Lutyens - trustee in the estate of her late husband, Sir Edwin Lutyens, who designed the Whitehall Cenotaph - requesting permission to erect a monument on similar lines in Bendigo, and outlining the reasons. Permission was readily granted. It was a replica constructed in Stawell stone and is the only replica of the Whitehall Cenotaph to be erected in any part of the world. It was unveiled by the Lieutenant-Governor of Victoria, Sir Edmund Herring, K.C.M.G., K.B.E., K.St.J., D.S.O., E.D., M.A., D.C.L. Buff coloured document titled ' A New Link is Forged' : document outlines the history of the inception of a Bendigo Cenotaph, 'built to perpetuate the memory of Australian servicemen ,,,, and to cement 'the ties of Empire'. Sir George Lansell, World War 1 veteran and President of the RSL, conceived of the idea of erecting the Cenotaph. Written in italics on document: "In Bendigo's Charing Cross, a wide expanse in the heart of the city, this monument now stands completed. The work starts with a city in Victoria having a population of 38,000 that now has a half size replica of the Whitehall cenotaph in London, Bendigo the proudest City in the Commonwealth on June 2nd 1957. Unveiled by Sir Edmund Herring. The happiest man in Bendigo was Sir George Lansell, his vision to erect a suitable monument to those Australian Servicemen who paid the supreme sacrifice. In attendance at Charing Cross were thousands of people , ex Servicemen, Army and navy units, Parliamentarians, Members of the Diplomatic Corp who listened to stirring addresses by Sir Edmund Herring, the Mayor of Bendigo Cr A.S.
