Historical information

The work starts with a city in Victoria having a population of 38,000 that now has a half size replica of the Whitehall cenotaph in London, Bendigo the proudest City in the Commonwealth on June 2nd 1957. Unveiled by Sir Edmund Herring. The happiest man in Bendigo was Sir George Lansell, his vision to erect a suitable monument to those Australian Servicemen who paid the supreme sacrifice. In attendance at Charing Cross were thousands of people , ex Servicemen, Army and navy units, Parliamentarians, Members of the Diplomatic Corp who listened to stirring addresses by Sir Edmund Herring, the Mayor of Bendigo Cr A.S. Craig and Sir George Lansell.
The Chaplain General of the Armed Forces the Right Rev, C.L. Riley, former Bishop of Bendigo, travelled from Perth WA to perform the Dedication.
