Has brown paint on the lifting portion. On the rear, possibly the letters "5L", scratched into the metal. If this is the case, could have indicated the fifth left hand window as an identification of location. Mr Carl Otto (Clyde) Drevermann was born at Lucknow and worked in various parts of Victoria before coming to Orbost in about 1902. In July 1902 he entered into partnership with Mr Edward Fisher Reynolds and the ironmongery, hardware and tinsmithing business was carried on by the new firm as Drevermann and Reynolds. In about 1905 Mr Drevermann assumed proprietorship and the tinsmith and plumbing section of the business was sold off to Mr Edward Swan. The ironmongery, hardware and timber business was known as Carl Dreverman & Co until 1917 when it was changed to Orbost Hardware and Timber Co. This shop had a row of nails on the window sill to prevent people sitting on the ledge. Carl Drevermann was a prominent Orbost identity and the Drevermann family owned the current Orbost Hardware Store for many years. Clyde [Carl] Drevermann died on 15/11/1946 aged 72. He was born in Lucknow and went into partnership with E P Reynolds on 9/8/1902 in Orbost selling furnishings, general ironmongery, furniture and tinsmith items. This partnership did not last long as on 6/9/1902 the shop then operated as Carl Drevermann & Co. later to become the Orbost Hardware & Timber Co. Mr Reynolds relocated the tinsmith part of the business to a new address. Mr Drevermann was a keen motorist and promoter of East Gippsland during the time when motor tourism was in its infancy. The photo is taken in 1934 and illustrates the internal view of a ward in the Mental Hospital at Beechworth. Some patients in beds and three nurses are in view. Beds were arranged in lines alongside the walls and there were no partitions or screens to create privacy for patients. Furniture was simple and humble; bed frames were made of metal or wood and pillowcases and covers for the attendant`s tables were sometimes made of blue-striped canvas or calico. Large windows in the walls were offering ample light and the room was well-tended, with Christmas decoration, flowers, pots and carpets on the floor. The nurse in the foreground is Miss Neary. The Mayday Hills Hospital was constructed between 1864 and 1867, with buildings created in a number of periods. It formally opened on 24 October 1867 and, along with the Ovens Hospital and the Benevolent Asylum, made Beechworth a prominent social welfare centre in Victoria. The need for an institution of this kind was arisen due to the increased number of people with mental disturbances (induced by the harsh living conditions on the goldfields) and the remoteness of the district from Melbourne. The site was chosen for its panoramic view of the countryside, the hilltop atmosphere and the native fauna, all contributing to the cure of patients. The Hospital was originally named the “Ovens Lunatic Asylum” but, during the centenary celebrations in 1967, the name was officially changed to “Mayday Hills Hospital”, showing the gradual shift in the perception and understanding of mental health conditions over the last decades. The Hospital lies on the traditional land of the Kulin Nation. This photograph is historically significant as it provides an insight into the living conditions of patients admitted to the Mayday Hills Hospital at the beginning of the 20th century. It also contributes to the understanding of the district`s development and its importance to the course of Victoria`s history. Additionally, it provides important information about the way mental health conditions were perceived at that time and how patients were treated. This hand tool would have been used either in the home for making small items of furniture or small building projects or it could have been used by a tradesman working on small jobs in the building industry – window sills, doors, cupboards etc. Planes are still used today to whittle down wood. This tool has no known local provenance but it is a good example of hand tools of the past and will be useful for display. This is a metal plane used for shaving wood. It has a rectangular base curved at the ends and the end of a steel blade is visible near one end of the base. The handle is dome-shaped and attached to the handle by a screw is a ridged metal wheel that rests on the blade which has been inserted on an angle. This wheel can be turned to adjust the blade, keep it in place or remove it for replacement. Built in 1860, the Eltham Courthouse is the oldest public building remaining in Eltham. In its early days the building was used as the meeting place and office of the Eltham District Road Board and as an overflow classroom for the local school. The Eltham Courthouse ceased operational duties in 1984 and is now used by various community groups including Eltham District Historical Society. It was listed on the Victorian Heritage Register (Number H0784) in 1982. The building is of architectural significance because it retains intact early features. These include use of handmade bricks, simple decoration, roof trusses, timber ceiling boards, original windows, doors and associated hardware and a collection of court furniture. Additions to the court house have been done in a manner which did not interfere with the fabric of the original building. The items in this collection of Ecclesiastical Linen were used by St. Andrews Anglican Church on the corner of the Esplanade and 14 Drummond St, Dennington, Victoria. The first Anglican service was conducted on December 22nd, 1907. The church was decommissioned in January 2003. The items donated include Maniples, Chalice Covers, a Goblet Cover, Altar Cloths, Matts, Priest's scarf, armband and sashes, and a bag that is a cover for the Baptismal Towel. HISTORY OF ST ANDREWS, DENNINGTON The land on which St Andrews Church was built in Dennington was surveyed in the 1840s and reserved for church purposes in 1855. In 1889 the Farnham Dairy factory relocated to Dennington and the town began to grow as involvement in the dairy industry increased in the area. In 1896 plans for a church hall on the reserved land were considered and on 22nd December 1907, the first Anglican Service was conducted in Dennington, with 60 people attending. In August 1909 the first building was opened with a midweek evening service conducted by the Rev. J.A. Coe. The Sunday School was opened the following year. In that same year, Nestle took over the Farnham dairy plant. On December 20th, 1914, a new church was opened in memory of Andrew Peacock, who passed away in 1912. The funds had been raised by the community and 150 attended the morning service. The building was described as a simple edifice with a plain exterior and high, wide pointed windows, and a comfortable porch entrance, all of which gave a pleasing impression of light and space. In 1935 the average attendance for morning services was just over 22 people. In 1936 extensive repairs and replacements were carried out. In 1947 the first recorded Pastoral Festival took place and in the same year, a Ladies Guild was formed. In 1954 water services were connected to the church building. Many items of furniture, furnishings and books were donated over the life of the church, including handworked linen items. Further items were added due to the work of the Ladies Guild, as well as donations in memory of church and community members.These items of Ecclesiastical Linen are significant as examples of handworked embroidery and drawn-thread work from the early 20th century. They are also examples of a collection of items used for church services during this period. The Ecclesiastical Linen is also significant for its association with the early development of the local township of Dennington and the importance of setting aside land in the 1850s for the purpose of religious worship. The Ecclesiastical Linen is also significant for its connection to St Andrews Anglican Church, Dennington. The church was funded and attended by the local community in the early 1900s and is now listed on the Victorian Heritage Database (VHD 118083) as a building of historical and social significance. Set of Ecclesiastical Linen. The items were once used in St. Andrew's Anglican Church, Dennington, Victoria, between the years 1907 and 2003. All of the handmade items are in white fabric. Some also have embroidered emblems, tassels and drawn-thread work. White embroidery thread has been used for most of the decorated items, with the following exceptions, which have been embroidered with coloured thread; the communion linen, the Priest's scarf, armband and sash, the altar cloths, mats and a cover for the baptismal towel. The photograph wa published in the Age, 14th of June 1958. The picture shows the round stained glass dedicated on Sunday 14 December 1947 and the reredos with hangings donated by Maud Breaks in memory of her sister Louise Breaks and dedicated on 26 August 1954 by the Bishop of Geelong.This is a rare picture of the interior of the St Nicholas chapel which was erected behind the former E, S & A Bank building used by the Williamstown Seamen's Mission branch from 1944. Article in the Age reading: "Seamen's Window Dedicated - A window in St. Nicholas' Mariners' Church, at Williamstown, in memory of the merchant seamen who were killed on active service In the last war, was unveiled and dedicated yesterday.The ceremony was performed by the Bishop of Geelong (Rt. Rev. J. D. McKie). The window, erected by the Williamstown Lightkeepers' Auxiliary of the Victoria Missions to Seamen is placed behind the altar. It shows a quartermaster, with his hand on the wheel, and the figure of Christ pointing ahead. Bishop McKie paid a tribute to the spirit of the men who gave their lives at sea in the service of their country. He said the work of the auxiliary would still be of great value, although the war was over." The decision of the window was published in August 1947, Mrs Musther -who created the Lightkeepers' Auxiliary branch in Williamstown - ordered it from Brooks, Robinson & Co. (job books 1923-1966). This plaque was erected in the Williamstown Sailors' Rest, the former skating ring in Thompson Street. It's one the three memorials to Ethel Godfrey with the stained glass window in the St Peter chapel in the Central Institute (See 0064.2) ) and the optus sectile plaque in the 1888 Port Melbourne Institute (See 2053) . This plaque was moved to the Nelson Place building when the Mission purchased the E,S&A Bank in 1943. In 1982, the plaque ws removed from the Williamstown mission along with 4 other plaques, objects and furniture to furnish the chapel of the new Flagstaff Maritime Museum. This an advertisement / souvenir for Merrangbaur House in Lakes Entrance. Merrangbaur was in , Lakes Entrance and stood on the on the Prince's Highway, about a kilometre from Lakes Entrance. It was destroyed by fire on the early morning of December 15, 1935. The original residence of the Roadknight family, the first white settlers in the Lakes Entrance district, Merrangbaur House had been conducted as a guest house for many years. Much of the furniture was lost, although a portion of the building, consisting of the ballroom and several bedrooms, was saved Mrs. Anne McInnes, aged more than 80 years, the mother of the proprietress, Miss McInnes, was the only guest sleeping in the house when the fire began and had to be assisted from her blazing bedroom on the ground floor. She was carried through a window by members of the fire brigade and spent the remainder of the night at the house of a friend. Miss McInnes was in Melbourne on a business visit arranging for Christmas bookings, when she was informed of her loss. This photograph records the interior of St Nicholas Seamen's Church at 139 Nicholson Street, Williamstown, Victoria, which was purchased and furnished around 1943. The furniture and furnishings are now part of the St Nicholas Seamen's Church collection. THE MISSIONS TO SEAMEN (Brief History: for more, see our Reg. No. 611, Set of Pews) The Missions to Seamen, an Anglican charity, has served the world's seafarers since 1856 in Great Britain. It symbol is a Flying Angel, inspired by a Bible verse. Today there are centres in over 200 ports worldwide where seamen of all backgrounds are offered a warm welcome and provided with a wide range of facilities. In Victoria, the orgainsation began in Williamstown in 1857. It was a Sailors’ Church, also known as ‘Bethel’ or the ‘Floating Church’. Its location was an old hulk floating in Hobson’s Bay, Port of Melbourne. It soon became part of the Missions to Seamen, Victoria. In the year 2000 the organisation, now named Mission to Seafarers, still operated locally in Melbourne, Portland, Geelong and Hastings. The Ladies’ Harbour Lights Guild was formed in 1906 to support the Missions to Seamen in Melbourne and other centres such as Williamstown. Two of the most significant ladies of the Guild were founder Ethel Augusta Godfrey and foundation member Alice Sibthorpe Tracy (who established a branch of the Guild in Warrnambool in 1920). The Guild continued its work until the 1960s. In 1943 a former Williamstown bank was purchased for the Missions to Seaman Club. The chapel was named St Nicholas’ Seamen’s Church and was supported by the Ladies’ Harbour Lights Guild, the Williamstown Lightkeepers’ Auxiliary and the League of Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Friends. It ceased operation in 1966. A Missions to Seamen Chapel and Recreation Room was a significant feature of ports during the late 1800s and into the 1900s. It seemed appropriate for Flagstaff Hill to include such a representation within the new Maritime Village, so the Melbourne Board of Management of Missions to Seamen Victoria gave its permission on 21st May 1979 for the entire furnishings of the Williamstown chapel to be transferred to Flagstaff Hill. The St Nicholas Seamen’s Church was officially opened on October 11, 1981, and closely resembles the Williamstown chapel. This photograph is part of the Caulfield Historical Album 1972. This album was created in approximately 1972 as part of a project by the Caulfield Historical Society to assist in identifying buildings worthy of preservation. The album is related to a Survey the Caulfield Historical Society developed in collaboration with the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) and Caulfield City Council to identify historic buildings within the City of Caulfield that warranted the protection of a National Trust Classification. Principal photographer thought to be Trevor Hart, member of Caulfield Historical Society. Most photographs were taken between 1966-1972 with a small number of photographs being older and from unknown sources. All photographs are black and white except where stated, with 386 photographs over 198 pages. From Glen Eira Heritage Management Plan 1996 by Andrew Ward: In 1905, most of portion 27 was vacant land, however Glenferrie Street had been formed and the land subsequently subdivided. In 1906, Robert Joseph Haddon, architect and painter, designed and built for his private residence, a brick house on the west side. Haddon named the house "Anselm". Also built on the property were a garage and fibro cement studio. "Anselm" is architecturally important at the State level as a substantially intact, highly personalised and boldly expressed house expressive the Arts and Crafts movement and incorporating Art Nouveaux enrichment in a variety of forms, the use of ornamental terra cotta tiles to the comer tower being of special note. Anselm was designed by noted English born architect Robert Joseph Haddon(1866-1929) as his own house and constructed in 1906. A single storey Arts and Crafts influenced red brick house with attic, Anselm has a pyramidal slate roof with prominent chimney stacks. There is a octagonal corner tower with saucer shaped domed roof surmounted by a weather vane, and the tower has decorative terracotta panels immediately below the eaves line. The front door opens immediately into a large living or common room, screened from view by a timber and bottle glass screen. The large room was designed to function as a drawing and dining room. This photograph is part of the Caulfield Historical Album 1972. This album was created in approximately 1972 as part of a project by the Caulfield Historical Society to assist in identifying buildings worthy of preservation. The album is related to a Survey the Caulfield Historical Society developed in collaboration with the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) and Caulfield City Council to identify historic buildings within the City of Caulfield that warranted the protection of a National Trust Classification. Principal photographer thought to be Trevor Hart, member of Caulfield Historical Society. Most photographs were taken between 1966-1972 with a small number of photographs being older and from unknown sources. All photographs are black and white except where stated, with 386 photographs over 198 pages. From Glen Eira Heritage Management Plan 1996 by Andrew Ward: In 1905, most of portion 27 was vacant land, however Glenferrie Street had been formed and the land subsequently subdivided. In 1906, Robert Joseph Haddon, architect and painter, designed and built for his private residence, a brick house on the west side. Haddon named the house "Anselm". Also built on the property were a garage and fibro cement studio. "Anselm" is architecturally important at the State level as a substantially intact, highly personalised and boldly expressed house expressive the Arts and Crafts movement and incorporating Art Nouveaux enrichment in a variety of forms, the use of ornamental terra cotta tiles to the comer tower being of special note. Its importance at the State level is strengthened by its place as the home of the noted architect and Melboume's most influential exponent (Freeland, J.M., Architecture in Australia, p. 213) of the Art Nouveaux movement. There is a octagonal corner tower with saucer shaped domed roof surmounted by a weather vane, and the tower has decorative terracotta panels immediately below the eaves line. The front door opens immediately into a large living or common room, screened from view by a timber and bottle glass screen. The large room was designed to function as a drawing and dining room. A washstand was a standard piece of furniture in many Victorian bedrooms. On it stood a jug of cold water, a bowl, and a clean rag. The person washed first thing in the morning, immediately after rising. Most bedrooms were cold, chilly places, especially as the sash windows were kept open at the top and bottom (regardless of weather) to allow good ventilation and reduce the risk of illness. This meant in winter most people kept their nightclothes and worked on one part of their body at a time. The art of a stand-up wash was to pour water into the bowl. The soaked flannel was then rubbed on each part of the body, and rinsed. Once the water became too soiled it was discarded into the slop bucket and more water poured into the bowl. Working methodically, all of the body was cleaned, with each part being scrubbed and dried before moving onto the next bit. Whitmuir Hall was built 1850 using bricks hand -made from the clay of nearby Elster Creek. Early history of the 156 acre estate bounded by McKinnon, Centre, Thomas and Wheatley Roads is obscure. The gardens were laid out prior to 1850. Robert Gray Ford purchased 20 acres with mansion in 1872 for £ 1750 and it was valued at £ 25,000 in 1888 but sold after the Bank Crash 1890's for £ 5,000 in 1892. There were many owners over the years including Thomas Bent and in 1870 it was called 'Killearnan'. It is now is known as 'the Bentleigh Club and many original features have been restored and preserved . Whitmuir Hall, was a stately mansion built 1850 typical of the grandiose plans of successful early settlers. The dolls house and furniture was made by Heinrich August Ernst KOCH, who was interned at Orange NSW on the 6 June 1940. In 1941 was taken to Tatura VIC for an appeals tribunal hearing. He was released in 1943 to the Civil Alien Corp. The donor of the dolls house, John Smiles, is the grandson of Heinrich. Heinrich made the dolls house and furniture which he made for his daughters in Sydney NSW. It was sent to them whilst interned. The furniture is copies of real life size items and the house has features common with the family home in Sydney.Wooden, painted dolls house, made from packing crates. 5 main pieces with additional pieces (roof, chimney, stairs, outside roof area, furniture) which go together to form this long single story dolls house.
