In the words of the donor, Betty Stone, "This fitted writing slope box belonged to Ellis Dale of “Latrigg”, Wangoom, Warrnambool, and has an inscription “E. Dale”, hand written by Ellis on a small brass plaque featured on the lid. Ellis Dale, born 21 November 1860, was the second son of William and Elizabeth Dale, of Dale Bluestone Quarries Wangoom. He worked with his father at the quarries, and continued, after his father's death, to operate the family business with his son lvor until he died, aged 79 years, on 2 August 1940. Although the tradition was that the writing box was originally owned by Ellis's father, William Dale, there is some doubt that he brought it with him from England when he migrated in 1852 - however, we do know that it is at least one hundred years old. (Note: For additional information please refer to my book “Pioneers and Places - A History of three Warrnambool Pioneering Families” ie. Chamberlain, Dale and Lees Families)This item is associated with the Warrnambool pioneer families of Chamberlain, Dale and Lees. Presumed worn by Mrs C.V Schooling as noted written on the piece of paper underneath the burgundy mount inside the case.A ladies watch with a purple patterned enamel surround, a white face and black roman numerals surrounded by tiny gold dots around the edge of the face. It has a metal grooved winder on the right of the face which moves the hands but the watch doesn't keep time. The wristband is brown leather with a Reg. No on the back and has a gold coloured buckle. Is is in its original lidded case - CYMA brand, although the brand is not written on the watch itself. The case has a purple label on the top lid with an illustration of a black and gold watch with gold roman numerals behind it. CYMA - on time all the time is written below. Inside the lid is the brand and a statement about the guarantee. It sits on a burgundy velvet mount. Underneath the mount is a handwritten message from the wearer stating that the watch doesn't keep time. On the bottom of the box is writing in grey pencil with many words indecipherable. Some ink words are seen.CYMA - on time all the time is written on the top of the case lid. Inside the lid is written - CYMA - This Cyma watch is free from any defect of construction and is guaranteed to keep accurate time if not misused. These items relate to the Life Membership of the Warrnambool Horticultural Society awarded to Mrs Gladys Angus. The Warrnambool Horticultural Society was founded in September 1863 and the first Show was held in the old Temperance Hall in the December of that year. Today the activities of the Horticultural Society are combined with those of the Warrnambool Agricultural Society. Mrs Gladys Angus lived in ‘Birchwood’ in Koroit Street, Warrnambool and this property was noted for its fine garden lay-out and display. Mrs Angus took a keen interest in the garden and greatly assisted the activities of the Warrnambool Horticultural Society. Her husband, Dr William Roy Angus, established a practice in Warrnambool in 1939 and was a for many years. Following his death Mrs Angus donated her husband’s collection of historical medical equipment to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and this collection is on display in the Port Medical Officer’s building today. These items are of interest as they belonged to Mrs Gladys Angus. She and her husband, Dr William Roy Angus, were prominent people in Warrnambool in the 20th century. .1 This is a badge with the image of a red rose on a gold and yellow background connected to a red and gold metal bar by a metal chain link. The bar has a gold clip at the back. .2 This is a souvenir spoon in silver tonings with a badge affixed to the top of the spoon. The badge has an image of a red rose on a yellow and gold background. The spoon is in a plastic container. .3 This is a rectangular-shaped card with gold lettering and ink writing. .4 This is a letter with a green letterhead and typed material. This is the MINJAH telephone exchange testing unit. The exchange was adjacent to the property of MINJAH which is situated near Hawkesdale in Western Victoria. The exchange operated between 1955 and 1985. The testing unit was used for detecting and testing faults in the telephone system. The keys along the front were called "Hospital Keys" and were used to give subscribers a temporary connection in the event of a break down. The telephone exchange was replaced by an automatic exchange.This is a good example of a manual telephone system in Western VictoriaThis is a rectangular polished wooden box with a telephone mechanism on the side connected by a hook. These birds’ eggs were collected by Charles Brittlebank before 1910 but at this stage it is not known from which area they came. English-born Charles Brittlebank was a naturalist interested in ornithology, geology and mycology. He was the Government Plant Pathologist for Victoria from 1913 to 1924. He was the first to discover evidence of glaciation in the Werribee Gorge and published many papers on this subject and other aspects of natural history. It is not known when Charles Brittlebank was in the Warrnambool area or the origin of the birds’ eggs but it a very interesting (and perhaps rare) historical collection. .1 Birds’ Eggs - There are 27 eggs, either whole or partial specimens, contained in a box with home–made cardboard partitions. Ten are intact and the rest are broken. Eight are white and the remainder are speckled. The eggs are resting on a turquoise-coloured piece of material .2 Nest – This is woven from hair and fine twigs and is filled with white wool-like fragments .3 Letter – These are two sheets of writing paper with handwritten information in blue ink. .4 Envelope - This is a small envelope which contained the sheets of paper (.3 above) and the front has handwritten material in blue ink..3 ‘To whom it may concern – I hereby declare that these eggs were collected before 1910, and were part of a collection of the late Charles Brittlebank which is now in the Melbourne Museum. Medallion was produced by the Royal Australian Mint and given to members who served with Australian Forces or her Allies between 1939 - 1945. This was on the 60th Anniversary of the end of WW2. The Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme (KHES) produced electricity for the people living in the Kiewa Valley and beyond to many parts of Victoria. The people and their families working on the scheme were encouraged by their employer the State Electricity Commission of Victoria to purchase and use electrical appliances. The iron was popular as it was quick and easy compared to those used previously. This iron belonged to Ron White who was a senior member of staff during the construction and operation of the KHES.This iron was owned by Ron White who was appointed Area Operations Engineer Kiewa in June 1956. He was later appointed General Superintendent and then, in 1974, he was appointed Principal Hydro Engineer of the recently titled Hydro Division.Rectangular yellow and black cardboard box with 'complete' fitting lid. These type of marking crayons have been in use from the 1800s onward to mark commercial and non commercial goods and articles that require waterproof and visual identification labels. Items such as bales of wool, tobacco tags, transportation tags(shipping, rail and road) and other "hard to mark" items that require information to be displayed by semi permanent waterproof signage. The crayons are also an advantage for young student art work.This particular box of leviathan crayons was in use by students in the Mount Beauty Primary School through the Victorian Education Supply Department. As the texture and adhesive/application qualities (soft medium and hard) allows students to be "creative" on various type of canvases. This type of application in schools is of a non commercial and simplistic art -form nature however more advanced students could present a commercial interest in a viable creative artistic venture. The major commercial and non educational uses are encompassed in a rural grazing and farming regions, of the Kiewa Valley and adjoining lands.The crayon box is made from cardboard and light buff colour. The box contains six "No.1" crayons, two of which have been used. Each crayon is wrapped with manufacturer's details on 180 gsm thick paper. The wrapper runs nearly 4/5 th of the entire length, leaving 1/5th open to display the colour of the crayon. The colours of the crayons are blue, purple, green, yellow, red and black. These Readers are reprints of the readers used in Victorian Schools - one for each grade - first published by the Victorian Education Department between 1928 and 1930. Second editions of all but the First book, with a few changes in content, occurred about 10 years later. From the 1950s, new Departmental publications gradually replaced the old books with the exception of the Fifth and Sixth Books, which survived until the late 1960s, when commercially produced reading material finally took over in schools. Corrector fluid was used to cover typing mistakes before retyping over it upon drying. Correction fluid became available sold with a brush and was drier and therefore quicker to use. Computers then followed with 'delete' keys to correct mistakes.
