Warrnambool and District Historical Society Inc.Booklet, Australia's second Air Mail. The aviation Career of Basil Watson 1893-1917, 2017
... Its a pity that the 100 year anniversary of his flight was not more widely recognised but thank you for mounting some of his records. ...Its a pity that the 100 year anniversary of his flight was not more widely recognised but thank you for mounting some of his records. ...This booklet relates the life of Basil Watson. It tells in detail his early life, background, his home built aeroplane, his display flights and his tragic death and the story since. This year marks 100 years since one of Australia’s pioneering aviators, Basil Watson arrived in Warrnambool and delivered the first airmail to the town. Basil Watson was born in Bendigo in 1894. His interest in aviation which began at a young age, took him to England at the commencement of WW1 where he worked at Brookland in aviation workshops and as a test pilot. Despite crashing and suffering injuries he was not deterred. He returned to Australia and by 1916 Basil had built his own plane. He soon took to the air performing tricks and barnstorming to the delight of onlookers. His connection to Warrnambool lies with his delivery of the first airmail to the town, an event which was filled with much excitement. Basil Watson, pioneer aviator landed his 50hp home built aeroplane on the racecourse on Saturday January 27th 1917, after a flight from Point Cook. The trip of 166 miles took just under two hours, and set a record non-stop cross country flight for Australia. Watson was heartily welcomed by the Mayor, to whom he delivered three letters, the first aerial post to Warrnambool. One of the letters, from the Mayor of Melbourne Sir David Hennessy to the Mayor of Warrnambool is now in the W&DHS collection: I have much pleasure in sending you greetings by aeroplane piloted by my friend, Mr Basil Watson. I hope when the cruel war is over and victory crowns our efforts, we, over the Commonwealth, will be able to fly from one State to the other. With best wishes for the New Year. Yours truly, DV Hennessy. Basil Watson was unfortunately killed two months after his historic visit to Warrnambool. While participating in an air show at Point Cook, the plane he was flying that day crashed into the sea. This booklet tells the story of an interesting part of Warrnambool and Australia's aviation history. It has special significance as it enlightens two significant items in our local collection, namely the letter which he delivered and the seat from his aircraft.A small 29 page booklet with blue and white photograph of Basil Watson in his aeroplane. It contains a number of black and white and some colour photographs. Introduction from the author, "This small booklet recognises the short career of Basil Watson. He came to my attention when researching the French aviator Maurice Guillaux who carried the first official air mail in Australia, Melbourne to Sydney in two and a half days 16/18 July 1914..... Tom Lockley 1 June 2017. Handwritten inside front cover,"These items may be of interest to add to your material about Basil Watson. Its a pity that the 100 year anniversary of his flight was not more widely recognised but thank you for mounting some of his records. Tom Hockley."warrnambool, basil watson, first airmail flight, aviation career of basil watson -

The Sydenham cairn was erected on 19 December 1924, exactly 100 years after the explorers passed through the district. It was built by residents of St Albans and Sydenham as part of a statewide centenary program that installed 37 monuments along the expedition route. The monument has been moved twice due to road works as it was originally on the north‑west corner of Taylors Road & Sydenham Road. The first time it was relocated it was moved to position very close to the original position. The second time it was moved approximately 200 metres in a southerly direction and is now located at the Keilor Plains Station (East Esplanade). In November 2024, the Sydenham & District Historical Society held a 100‑year anniversary event for the cairn and a 200‑year anniversary of the 1824 expedition. Attendees included City of Brimbank Mayor Thuy Dang, Members of Natalie Suleyman MP’s office and local historians including Karen Schmidt and Bruce Lancashire. 5623.01 - Sydenham Hume And Hovell Monument 2nd April 2020 Photo 02.JPG 5623.02 - Sydenham Hume And Hovell Monument 2nd April 2020 Photo 03.JPG 5623.03 - Sydenham Hume And Hovell Monument 2nd April 2020 Photo 01.JPG Hume & Hovell passed here Dec. 19th 1824. The photo is also reproduced in the book 'People of The Shrine' by Sandra Dexter. ...Four Mawson sisters: Beatrice, Harriett, Muriel and Ethel all trained as nurses. Date of photograph is unknown but believed to be before 1915 when Ethel married and would have ceased working. They were 4 of 5 daughters born to Frederick and Mary Mawson who migrated to Victoria, arriving on 1st July 1882 on the sailing ship Holmsdale. By 1892, the family had moved to 4 Bona Vista Avenue, Surrey Hills where they remained for 25 years. Beatrice worked on transport duty ships during WW1, ferrying wounded troops from France to England. On the return voyage to Australia, the ship was sunk by a mine in Bay of Bengal, but she survived. Muriel and Harriet also served during WW1 in English Military hospitals and returned to Australia on 15 March 1919. It is believed that Ethel worked with aboriginal health. Their brother John Mawson designed and built 'Holmsdale' over 2 blocks of land in 257-259 Union Road as a convalescent and rest home to be run by Muriel and Harriet. It opened in 1936 with Beatrice also joining and closed in the mid-1950s. Holmsdale was converted into 3 flats with the three sisters living in one flat for the remainder of their lives and the other flats rented out to provide them with an income. Beatrice died in 1975, Harriet in 1976 and Muriel in 1979. Beatrice, Harriett and Muriel's names were added to the list of names on The Shrine in the Surrey Gardens when the panels were updated at the time of the 100 year anniversary of WW1. The photo is also reproduced in the book 'People of The Shrine' by Sandra Dexter. This was launched on Remembrance Day 2025. Their younger brother William Frederick Mawson was killed in action in Belgium aged 24 years. His name also appears on The Shrine and in the book. Note: If anyone in these photographs does not want their image to be visible on the Victorian Collections public website, please email [email protected] with a request to remove that photo. This Reunion was held at York on Lilydale, Lilydale, Victoria on March 27 2010, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the school commencing in February 1960 in the newly-completed building as a co-educational campus. Prior to that it had operated on two separate, temporary campuses until the new school was ready: - at Ferntree Gully Technical School in 1958 for 100 Form 1 boys, then the following year in spare rooms at Lilydale State School for 200 Form 1 and 2 boys - at Box Hill Girls' Technical School in 1959 for 100 Form 1 girls The Reunion was organised by Joan Pickford, helped by several other past students. Joan worked exceptionally hard to organise the reunion and the materials displayed on the night. The beautiful RTS banner that we all walked past in the school's main corridor all those years ago, was there in all its glory - the only RTS relic that wasn't showing its age on the night. It was a great event and well-attended. The noise of people chatting and swapping stories was deafening. Some of the 1958-59 original students, and teachers from the1960s onwards were there. People brought along their photos and memorabilia. Some wore their ties and badges which still fitted after all those years. One former prefect wore his old blazer, which must have shrunk in the wardrobe but reminded many of us of those carefree times at school.. Best of all was the re-kindling of memories, and renewing and consolidation of friendships started at the school all those years ago. (This background provided by Liz Seaton, September 2022) This record contains 10 of the 57 photographs taken at the RTS Reunion 27 March 2010. Records 21009-1 to -6 contain the full collection.
