... , Councillor A T Morrison, imbarred the monument at the foot of Sturt..., the Mayor of the City, Councillor A T Morrison, imbarred ...This quartz and bluestone monument pays tribute to James Galloway the founder of the the eight-hour day system that gave workers the right to stop work after 8 hours without any penalty. The system was widely celebrated as a world first and Australia became known as a workingman’s paradise. Eight hour day is translated as: Eight hours of work, eight hours of leisure and eight hours of rest. In 1880, the 8hr day Anniversary Committee decided to mark the establishment of the 8hrs day by erecting a monument to the memory of the pioneer of the 8hr movement in the colony, James Galloway. The campaign for the Galloway monument was so successful that one year later on 21 April 1881, and after the longest 8hrs day procession to that date, the Mayor of the City, Councillor A T Morrison, imbarred the monument at the foot of Sturt Street, Ballarat. The monument is of historic significance to the people of BallaratGranite spire with four cast iron drinking fountains and marble tablets. Inscriptionplaques are attached to the sides of the spire.Erected in honor of the late James Galloway the founder of the Eight Hour System in Victoria/ Born at Springfield Fifeshire 28th February 1828 Died at Collingwood Melbourne 3rd June 1860/ Amicus Humani Generis/ This Monument is tendered in trust to the City Council for the working men of Ballarat April 21st 1880/ Eight Hours Labor Eight Hours Recreation Eight Hours Restjames galloway, eight-hour day, 8 hour, workers rights, ballarat, trades hall -

The Beechworth Burke Museum
Photograph, 1870
Taken in 1870, the photograph depicts Charles Sherwood Stratton (known professionally as General Tom Thumb), Lavinia Stratton, George Washington Morrison Nutt (known professionally as Commodore Nutt), and Huldah Pierce Warren Bump (known professionally as Minnie Warren). They are all dressed in identical costumes worn in 1864 before Emperor Louis Napoleon and Empress Eugenia in Paris. Charles, Lavinia, George and Huldah were all American performers who traveled with the Barnum & Bailey Circus, founded by Phineas Taylor (P. T.) Barnum. They each participated in various acts including singing, dancing, miming, and celebrity impersonations, gaining international fame for their successful careers and small physical stature. The group performed in Australia in August 1870. They were joined by their touring party as part of the Barnum & Bailey Circus "Round the World" tour. Beechworth hosted the circus for three evening shows and two matinees. The photograph is historically significant due to the internationally renowned status of the four individuals pictured. In a general sense, it also provides insight into the arts in Victoria during the late nineteenth century, illustrating the type of entertainment that was enjoyed by the public during this time. The record's historical significance is further enhanced by the attire worn by the individuals in the photograph, and these garments' connections to Emperor Louis Napoleon and Empress Eugenia.Black and white rectangular photograph printed on matte photographic paper.Reverse: 4732.1 / General Tom Thumb + wife / Colonel Nutt + Minnie Warren / (?) / Beechworth / 1870 /entertainment album, general tom thumb, lavinia warren, commodore nutt, minnie warren, circus, p.t. barnum, barnum and bailey circus, beechworth, 1800s, performance, arts -

Porteous D Morrison, 1989 S Wilkinson T Calvert, 1990 N Gransmaa B ...The Fred Moore trophy is held on Australia Day long weekend. This trophy commemorates the losers, ie the highest score of the day over 12 holes. It began in 1967, and continues. Believed to be donated by Bill Cumming to honour the effort of the players. The event is a non handicap game, so anyone can play, not necessarily golfers. It is still quite a coveted prize. The names on this trophy are not generally found on any other trophies! 1967 L Gatenby G Irvine, 1968 F McIntosh D Morrison, 1969 R Richmond J Wilson, 1970 S Cumming D Urquhart, 1971 S Wilcocks M Koser, 1972 J Murnane D Urquhart, 1973 a. Illuminated Address
The names come from a variety of areas, from as far away as Glenmaggie, and may reflect who contributed a set sum for a presentation. Appears to have originally been framed. Fritz Horstman was first chair of the Upper Maffra Co-operative Butter and Cheese Factory in 1904.An important example of a locally-produced Illuminated address, as opposed to those of a more grandiose nature that were purchased from "outside".Illuminated address, unframed, presented Dec 1885 to Fritz Horstman, following his representing residents in the Maffra Shire for seven years. Signatories are: H. Amey, A. Allardyce, G. Lyndon, J. Gerrand, H. Crisp, T. Smith, indec, J. Atkinson, D. Miller, N.Nicholson, T. Martin, W. Clement, A. Clark, J.W. Hagan, T. Pollock, Osborn Bros, T. Anderson, J (?) herkes, J. Knox, J.Boland, P. Boland, J. Clyne, J. Forsyth, R. Ferguson, J. Cromb, H. Smith, R. Fullerton, A. Gerrand, Wm McCole, A. Morrison and 20 other ratepayers, John Williams, R. Harper, David Clyne, P. Mellon, J. Macfarlane. All appear to be written in the same hand, and are not actual signatures. Whole address appears to be executed in a rather amateur manner, rather than being from a commercial artist/calligrapher.local government, dairying -
