The Catholic temperance movement started in 1838 when Irish priest Fr Theobald Mathew established the Teetotal Abstinence Society in 1838. Fr Patrick Henneberry founded the Catholic Temperance movement in the USA and visited Australia in 1897 winning Australian Catholics to his cause. These medals were worn by Catholics who had taken a pledge of abstinence pictured on the reverse side of the medal.

The term Rechabites refers to a religious order, similar in some ways to the Nazirites, and they are mentioned by Eusebius of Emesa. In more recent times, the name has been used by Christian groups keen to promote total abstinence from alcohol, such as the Independent Order of Rechabites. The chain was added by Mrs Clarrie Rouget - daughter-in-law.A small gold I.O.R Independent order of Rechabites medallion on a gold open paperlink style chain to be worn around the neck. It has eight flat star shape points around the edge of a round blue centre which has a shield with symbols representing the Rechabites. On the back is the inscription as noted in detail in the next section below. The chain was added by Mrs Clarrie Rouget - daughter-in-law. It is displayed in a velvet purple jewelley box which has a cream and flock lining. The Independent Order of Rechabites Salford Unity was a total abstinence focused fraternal benefits society founded in Salford, England on 25/8/1835. The Junior Tent was a youth branch aimed at educating young people in the benefits of a sober lifestyle and associated social activities. The society provided financial and medical insurance before government welfare was established. Members paid dues to access sickness pay, funeral benefits, and eventually medical/hospital coverage during hard times.Colourfully illustrated Certificate of Merit from the Independent Order of Rechabites, presented to Bro. This article look at the Temperance Hall which was built in 1860 for the Bendigo Total Abstinence Society and its neighbour extending up the hill. Temperance Hall was designed by Vahland and Getzschmann. The building next was also built by Vahland and Getzschmann as a residence for Robert Strickland, later it was acquired by Dr. Oliver Penfold who extended the building and set up his medical practice . Rev. George Wilkinson was a prominent figure in Williamstown, known for his role as the first rector of Holy Trinity Church from 1859 to 1875. He was a native of County Cork and was appointed vicar of the prefabricated iron church imported from England. Wilkinson was recognized for his gentle manner and compassionate character, and he was a strong advocate of total abstinence, which was a significant aspect of his legacy. This pamphlet was produced by the Liquor Trades Defence Union. Mr John James Liston was secretary to the Union and appointed to this office in 1906. He directed many campaigns against prohibition. The Temperance movement began in Australia in the earl 1800s and advocated for moderation rather than abstinence. In response to this many hotels were converted to 'Coffee Palaces' in the late 1800s and did not serve any alcohol. During World War I early closing was introduced in many states including Victoria. This led to the advent of the 'six o'clock swill' where people would rush to drink as much as they could before closing. Unions such as the Liquor Trades Defence Union opposed this due to workers losing jobs and lost earnings.The pamphlet illustrates the history of temperance in Australia and the part that trade unions played in the fight against prohibition. Paper pamphlet. One piece of paper, folded to make 4 pages. The front page depicts a black triangle shape coming down from the top of the page with the point reaching down. At the top of the triangle are the words 'Workers Standards Threatened'. At the point of the triangle is a man in a rumpled suit and hat. His hands are in his pockets and he has a serious expressions. In the background is an industrial estate with what looks like factory chimneys. There are also small weatherboard houses with 'for sale' signs in front of them. Along the bottom of the page is a black wavy line with the words in off white ' 'prohibition will create unemployment'. The paper is off white/yellow with black text. Inside is a two page spread calling for union members to vote ' No'. The back page features rhetoric on what prohibition would mean to workers and talks of job displacement and lost earnings. The pamphlet is authorised by J. J. Liston, The Block, Collins St, C1.
